This year (as in the past) there are multiple levels of qualification ranking criteria - starting with Qualification score as the 1st order sort and ending with random sort as the 6th order.
Has anyone ever done any analysis of results to see if the higher orders are used and/or what the likelihood is of this occurring?
A cursory look through last year's Wisconsin Regional results (http://www2.usfirst.org/2013comp/Events/WIMI/rankings.html) showed 3 instances of ties in the 2nd order sort, 1 instance of tie in the 3rd order sort and no ties for 4th or 5th order (there was no 6th order last year).
With 57 teams in the tournament 6 out of 57 or 10.5% of teams had their ranking impacted by the 3rd order sort (tie in the 2nd means tie broken by the 3rd). Similarly 3.5% had their ranking impacted by the 4th order sort.
Has anyone ever looked at this phenomenon on a wider scale?
