View Full Version : Truss points in autonomous?

My team were talking today, and we are wondering if you throw your ball over the truss in autonomous, do you get the points for it? Our thought is that if you throw it hard enough, it will hit the back wall and roll back if it doesn't hit an opposing robot. I think this would be something fun to do during a practice game. So, is this legal? Will we get the 10 points for it?

Nope. For one thing, you'd be going the right way to get points for your opponent. For another, there are only truss points during Cycles, and there are no Cycles in automode per Q&A.

Along with what Eric said, You can't cross to the other side of the truss during auto anyways, so there's no way to shoot, or catch the ball on both sides of the truss.

you don't have to cross the center line to throw the ball over. Just simply throwing your ball over the truss while on your side of the field.

His point is you wouldn't be able to catch it without crossing the center line. Regardless, this strategy cannot get any points and guarantees fouls, so there shouldn't be any more need to consider it.

Also, all autonomous balls have to be scored in a goal before the ball on the pedestal can be put into play in teleop (3.1.2 MATCH Logistics). It probably wouldn't benefit your team to move a ball away from the goal during autonomous.

I don't think it's illegal, but I'm not sure you'll get any points.

You can cross behind the truss as long as it's not all the way, so you can get to the other side of the field in auto mode. (g15) (now that I'm thinking about it, what's to prevent a team from hitting another team on the other side of the field in auto?)

You can get a 24 inch part of your robot fully under the truss in auto if you have the right frame.

A BALL is considered SCORED over the TRUSS if a ROBOT causes a BALL to pass though the infinitely tall plane that is bounded by the top of the TRUSS and the TRUSS POLES toward the ALLIANCE’S GOALS (e.g. a red BALL towards the red GOALS).

Nothing is preventing robot contact in AUTO, same as last year.

For BALLS with which the ALLIANCE started the MATCH, points are awarded when they are SCORED in GOALS.
[...]
Points are awarded once per CYCLE for BALLS SCORED by ROBOTS in the GOALS, BALLS SCORED by ROBOTS over the TRUSS, and for each ROBOT CATCH and as each objective is achieved.
[...]
A CYCLE is the series of events that recur regularly, and each CYCLE begins with an ALLIANCE member retrieving their BALL from their lit PEDESTAL and ends when the BALL is SCORED in a GOAL.

Thus, no points awarded for a Truss attempt in automode.

Hold your horses there! Even if you didn't get any autonomous points and all your alliance teams were disabled, your robot would still win! You guys are going to have close to a fully autonomous robot?!

You're right. However, the autonomous contact thing is news to me. If teams are planning to start with a ball in front of them for a two ball auto, you put yourself at risk of getting hit.

G15: During Auto
A. a ROBOT starting in the white ZONE may not cross fully beyond the TRUSS
B. a ROBOT starting in its GOALIE ZONE must remain in contact with the carpet in its GOALIE ZONE.

You cannot cross fully past the truss or leave the goalie zone, I don't know how you could launch the ball over the truss without fully passing it considering you would need a near vertical shot. Also I'm not sure what this means relative to autonomous:
Points are awarded once per CYCLE for BALLS SCORED by ROBOTS in the GOALS, BALLS SCORED by ROBOTS
over the TRUSS, and for each ROBOT CATCH and as each objective is achieved. Additional points are credited to an
ALLIANCE upon each GOAL based on the number of ASSISTS earned by the ALLIANCE for that CYCLE.

But it sounds to me like assist, catch, and truss points can only be accumulated during a cycle, which is only during tele-op.

which is only during tele-op.

And only with tele-op balls.
