X and Y Axis Confusion

Hello! I know that this question might seem silly to some, but when you move the joystick right and left, is it moving along the X or Y axis? I would think that it would be the X axis value that changes from left to right, but I keep forgetting. Could someone please tell me?

You have it correct. Think of X as the cross supports in a Steering wheel, and Y as your foot on the Gas peddle.

Exactly. If you look at the joystick from above, the axes will look just like a standard coordinate system, with the max/min of each axis being ± 1:
