First off, that is hilarious.

Second, are you worried about incidental contact inside the bumper zone with a robot that drives up behind you? I presume the hammer moves fairly quickly.

Does that break 20" outside of your frame when the hammer swings through? looks close.

I do not see that cantilevered shaft holding up for long.

If this robot is not named Thor I will be sorely disappointed.

Funny, that's what I said when they first showed a picture of the hammer!

I also think that the cantilevered shaft is going to be an issue... the torque from impacting the ball is going to be significant, I think.

Does your Kicking Hammer hit the ball on the bottom or near the back of it?

Holy smokes! So many replies!!

The cantilevered hex hub shaft... We have some plans for the hex hub shaft that the hammer mounts on. We are either going to mount the shaft to a bearing on a plate (from the other tower) or we are going to extend the shaft with a set screw and some other stuff. At any rate... We have plans! I'm bad at explaining these things. Haha.

It does not stick outside of the 20". The hammer (from the shaft down) is about 24" and the shaft is mounted about 10" in. Soooo, we're ok on that end.

The hammer will be able to strike the ball either directly underneath it (for a truss shot) or closer to the back (for a goal shot). The grippers in the front can bring the ball up or down.

We plan to name it Thor. When we make our reveal video and finish detailing it, you'll see why.

However, RC Hammer is insanely awesome. And John Henry.

next time when you build a tall superstructure like that add some bends to the long flanges to make the part stiffer. Think triangle support.

Is that solid steel on the hammer head? It looks tough! However, that tiny ridge makes me think it may just be plastic! Also, are you using shifters? What is your robot's range with this?

Hammer First Trial YouTube Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLbBcqCv_Mc&feature=youtu.be)

Here's a video of the hammer and grippers in action. Obvious disclaimer that this was literally the first time we ever kicked a ball with our final parts.

Also, we plan to do a ton of refining and the hammer isn't even mounted on there correctly. It's still just sitting on that one hex shaft out of the toughbox. We will correct that in the future.

We are just impatient and want to kick a freaking ball. Haha.

Can't wait to see you guys up in Duluth and at the Twin Cities regionals-- we aren't competing, but I hope we'll get the chance to at Champs and MN State. It's been a lot of fun watching your videos and reading your blog posts over the last few weeks.

That was my vote. As well as Team 45 from the 2010(?) IRI Talent Show.

I always love how nice and simple your robots are and am always jealous of how quickly you have a working robot. Too bad we dont get to compete together at duluth or the U. Good luck at competition hope to see you at State and Champs if both our teams manage to make it.

Lucky for us (or possibly unlucky depending on if we are or aren't on their alliance), Team 2052 will be competing at both of 3313's regionals this year. I actually think 3313 is the only other team besides ourselves doing both of those regionals so it should be fun. I can't wait to see Thor in action!

Can't speak for both, but it'll be a pleasure to see you all at lake superior!

Fear the hammer!

But, you can still get called for contact inside an opponents bumper zone (which would be a brutal penalty and missed shot combination). Since you probably have some free time, I'd look into an extension within the bumper zone so opponents cannot get in the hammer's path.

Ouch, yeah. Although I pity the robot that gets in the way of that hammer.
