after doing preliminary research i discovered OMR (optical mark recognition) is basically scantron, but not propriatery. If we were able to figure out and obtain OMR tools (haven't been able to find a free one), our team had the idea of using a custom scan sheet for scouting along with a usb printer to have a quick data entry system. i'd love to learn of everyone elses scouting techniques and ideas too, Thanks!

Wouldn't that require internet to grade? We want to do this in the stands.

There have been several interesting threads about scantron in the past. I suggest searching for scantron and omr.

that one looks great, just need to make sure it's output is data and not just a percent correct
i tried searching, but i couldn't find anything. i'll try again later though.
Team 254 has done this.

This is 1306's current scouting system, we call it CrowdScout. It's a scantron sheet that scouters fill out, then is ran to the scanner at our scouting station where the data is taken and uploaded to a server. The purpose of this is so that other teams can collaborate and use CrowdScout to make scouting better for everyone. This is just what I know as the driver - all of the software and logistics behind it you'll have to ask our programmers. If you're interested, PM me for a more in depth explanation on how it works.

As Nebster said, team 1306 has done this for a few years now.
Our scanning software (an integral part of CrowdScout) is open-source, viewable at our GitHub repository (https://github.com/team1306/OMAR). We'll be integrating it with our new improved version of CrowdScout soon.
If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
