View Full Version : 20" rule
I am seeking clarification on the rule stating that no part of the robot can extend 20" past the perimeter. Does this mean we can have two implements in this zone as long as neither extends beyond the 20"?
Thanks!

In theory you could have multiple extensions...like 1000 if you want

So that would be a Yes.
See Q&A number Q11. The answer they gave was "infinite."

Just look at your frame from a top view. Then from every point on the frame make an imaginary dot that is 20 inches away and then connect the dots. If your robot is circular then the diameter of your frame is about 35in...the diameter of the imaginary circle would be about 75in. ((75-35)/2=20in) You can have anything inside that circle. Your robot is probably not a circle, but the logic still applies.

While we are on the subject, if you control the 20" dimension with software alone, you will still be responsible if your software fails and you fall outside the 20" limit. It is recommended that you design in a system to prevent falling out of the 20" dimension. Better to be safe than sorry.

Here is the diagram we made to remind students while doing our design work.
