View Full Version : BattleCry@WPI 15 - Reg opening soon!

BattleCry@WPI 15 with take place over TWO full days on 24-25 May 2014 in Worcester, MA.

We are still finalizing the exact numbers and details, but expect more teams than last year (so 54+), more fun, along with the usual stuff like t-shirts, meals, and an amazing social for the same low registration fee of $350!

Tell your friends, tell your rivals, tell your neighboring rookie teams... we welcome and encourage everyone who is interested to sign up! However.. last year, registration filled within seconds of opening!

Those who do not make the initial team list will be placed on the Ready Reserves. EVERY YEAR we end up calling almost every team on the Ready Reserves looking for folks to play, especially for last minute drop-outs, so don't hesitate to register even if the slots are full and expect that you will be called up.

Since we are changing the schedule this year, our BC Planning Committee will be getting together ASAP to sort out the important details like final number of teams, registration opening date, schedules, etc. We'll post updates as soon as we know them!

When it opens, to register, go to www.wpi.edu/+bc and click "Enter the Fray".

We are currently working on updating our website with the new schedule, elimination brackets, etc.

If you are interested in volunteering, we'd love to have your help as well! Sign up here http://tinyurl.com/bc15vols

See you at BC15!

PS: Yes, we know it's Memorial Day weekend and we know it's Sat-Sun rather than the typical Fri-Sat!

Has the committee ever considered giving autobids to the previous year's winners? (...he asks somewhat selfishly ;))

I couldn't agree more!

BattleCry is one of the BEST FRC events in the country and I'm very excited to see it move to two full days because anything less just isn't enough!

Hi everyone-

Glad to hear teams are excited for another BattleCry@WPI! We're psyched to celebrate our 15th year running this event with some great new features and the classics.

Here are some general updates from our planning committee meeting earlier this week:

The BC15 theme is going to be awesome... You're going to love it! Once you register, don't be surprised if we stop by your team's pit at the NE DCMP or the FRC CMP to film you for the opening!
We are upping the capacity to 60 teams and testing another new pit layout for it. Looking at 9'x9' pits still we hope.
We will continue to move all 60 teams forward to the elims! That means 20 alliances of 3 teams.
We are guaranteeing each team 10 matches.
Expect to see some special 15-year swag just like we did at 10 years... and teams who have been to all 15 BCs (yes, there are several) will get some cool stuff too because, let's be honest, that's a pretty awesome feat!

And other important confirmations:

Registration fee stays at $350. Give props to our sponsors for their continued support!
You get 10 free t-shirts
You get 10 free lunches on Sunday
You get 10 free BBQ Dinners on Saturday
You get 10 free Ice Creams on Saturday
You are guaranteed to have a great time! If you're not, tell us so we can make sure you do!

We are reseting the BC registration site and expect to announce the registration opening date as soon as it is ready to roll. Typically it's around 1-Apr so keep an eye out. We try to set registration at a time that accommodates most area teams (so a Mon-Wed around noon) who might be attending events or have to work.

Here's our initial proposed agenda for the two days. Moving the Team Social a little earlier and making it longer will allow us to add some fun new activities that can take place outdoors and let people get home a little earlier if they wish.

Saturday - May 24
0800: Pits Open, Load-in
0830: Practice Matches Begin
0930: Practice Matches End
0930: Driver’s Meeting
1000: Opening Ceremony
1015: Matches Begin
1230: Lunch Break
1330: Matches Resume
1800: BBQ Begins
1900: Matches End, Pits Close
1900: Team Social Begins
2000: BBQ Ends
2200: Team Social Ends

Sunday - May 25
0800: Pits Open
0845: Opening Ceremony
0900: Matches Begin
1150: Matches End
1200: Alliance Selection
1215: Lunch Break
1300: Elimination Matches Begin
1700: Awards Ceremony Begins
1800: Event Ends

Let us know if you're coming on our Facebook event (https://www.facebook.com/events/683444325048540/)!

And whether or not your team is coming, sign up to be a volunteer (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?usp=drive_web&formkey=dEdiUVJZcXdxRVZ5a1BvS0ZRajh5TkE6MA#gid=0)! Off-seasons are a great place to try a new position you might like to have at an official FRC event!

P.S. Sorry... no auto-bids for previous Champions!

Registration will open Thursday April 3rd at noon.

Teams may register by going to this link (http://www.wpi.edu/news/Events/BattleCry/fray.html) or going to http://www.wpi.edu/+bc and clicking on "Enter the Fray".

The Enter the Fray page will automatically flip to the registration link sometime between 1200-1201 on Thursday.

The Challengers page will be updated with the team list typically 1-2 hours after registration opens. The first 60 registrants will be placed on the Challengers list and provided they submit timely payment will remain as active competitors. Any additional teams will be placed on the Ready Reserves and be called up as Challengers are unable to attend.

...we know it's Sat-Sun rather than the typical Fri-Sat!

We on 1519 are very bummed to be missing out on BattleCry (most members' favorite event of the season!) due to it being schedule for Sat-Sun... :-/

That said, it sounds like it'll be a phenomenal event with more teams, more matches, more "extra activities," and just generally more! Best of luck to the teams out there with a quick trigger finger! ;-)

I'm sure plenty of us will be down on Saturday cheering teams on and enjoying the best off-season event in FIRST!

Being a huge FRC bracket guy I have to ask... if you get 20 alliances, will you give alliances 1-4 a bye through the eighth-finals (or something like that)?

What? 1519 was such a treat to see last year at Battlecry in what I would like to call some of the best matches of Ultimate Ascent ever. Mechanical Mayhem's finals match strategy was amazing and incredible to watch. Some of my members were fangirling.

Anyways. That sucks to hear. I would have loved to have seen you guys again in what I am sure would have been incredible matches. Hopefully my team has a quick trigger finger. :)

ColleenShaver
03-04-2014, 10:00
We will be discussing the eighth-finals breakdown at our next BC Planning Meeting. This will include who plays who, if anyone gets a bye, and how many matches determine the eighth finals.

Last year, we played 15v18 and 16v17 to determine the "15th" and "16th" seeds, and proceeded into eighth finals that way. This year, there has been discussion to give the top teams byes past the eighth finals.

Thanks to Mike E who has already crunched some numbers for us, it looks like ~80% of the time, the winner of the first set of 3 matches determines the winner of the set, so it is likely the eighth finals will remain a single match. We do the math/consider that data every year to determine whether 1-2 matches will decide the eighth finals.

Notice there is still some space for a couple more if anyone didn't get in! Additionally, we typically go pretty deep into the ready reserves, so sign up even if it is full.

FYI, the script to auto-update the list isn't running yet, so it will only update if we manually push the list. So if you sign your team up and it doesn't show right away, don't worry!

Excited to see lots of 'regulars' and a bunch of new teams in the mix as well!

Anyone have a guess of how many (and which) teams have been to all 15 BattleCry@WPI's? We'll be doing something special for them this year!

Are there any updates on the cost/availability of on-campus housing? Specifically for volunteers? I'd like to volunteer and I'm working out the logistics so it'd be nice to save some money and stay in a dorm if at all possible (I'm a senior in high school who doesn't quite like spending money).

Changes for BC15

1. Bonus Circle ("BC") End Game Opportunity: Two 12-inch circles marked as a "BC" will be placed evenly-spaced under the truss for each match.

•The BC does not have a designated color and is available for any robot to utilize as a scoring opportunity.
• The robot is considered to be completely covering a BC if no portion of the BC is visible outside the "belt line" of the robot (including its bumpers)
•AT THE END OF THE MATCH: •An alliance will be awarded 20 points if a robot of its color is completely covering a BC while in possession of that alliance's ball
•BC scores will be assessed 5 seconds after the match clock goes to zero or when rolling robots comes to rest.

The final 10 seconds of each march will be intense!

319 is planning on attending this weekend but noticed a discrepancy on the battlecry website.

Under Operations Order it has registration setup at 8am and play beginning at 10:15 am

However under the match schedule it has the first match as 4:30 pm....

When should our team plan on arriving?

In theory I'll be backing up the inestimable Mark Terilli again this year :) Failing that, I'll spend my time wandering the pits yelling "Robot!" as people walk to the field, keeping an eye on people in Mascot costumes, or making sure there aren't too many extension cords plugged together. :deadhorse:

I'm also hoping for the rain to hold off long enough for Ultimate out on the lawn, the tasty BBQ, and of course delicious frozen treats at the social.

Oh and some robot competition I suppose :D

A wonderful BC XV. Always a premier Off Season event. Great venue with talented production from the Sound & Light crew.
The unsettled weather met the schedule and Ultimate Frisbee was enjoyed.
I appreciate the sacrifice made by many families to populate this event on a holiday weekend.

what a fantastic event this was glad that it is becoming a tradition for our team had so much fun playing with 181 and 2648, gave a great run all the way from the final seed 18th all the way to the semi finals upsetting three higher ranked alliance thank you to all involved in making it a great competition.
Given the inclusive nature of the eliminations, We were surprised to see 716 select 181, then get 2648. As a 19th! seed, you wouldn't expect much, but....
181, QF at Groton and Hartford. So underrated. Two ball autonomous that's 50/50 on the Hot goal, way above average.
716, QF in Hartford, SF at WPI and the District Champs, the Citroen of Robotics: always unique, always effective.
2648, Infinite Loop, This team is getting Engineering Inspiration, District Chairman's Awards, a regular player in eliminations, a finalist at WPI this year, representing New England on Curie in April... Messalonskee's finest

Not surprised to see your alliance dominate the Eighth Finals singled eliminations to power through to the Semifinals.

The BattleCry XV Championship Alliance of 2168 Aluminum Falcons, 3719 STEMWhalers, and 4048 RedShift, couldn't be a better coda to the Aerial Assist season.
They had a game plan and executed it consistently.

4048 really raised their game this year, Quarter Finals at WPI and the District Championship, Semifinals in Rhode Island...... back to WPI....

2168 has the wickedest defensive drive train. They go where they want to go, and have one of the best drivers in New England.
Their bullet goal shot was consistent here and seemed to get better through eliminations.
How many of us on CD know how hard it is to host an inaugural district event?
QF at Groton, SF at the District Champs, Finalists in RI.......on to BattleCry......

3719, STEM Whalers, QF in Groton and RI. Best season yet?.....forward to BattleCry......This trophy will be on display at their school.

It was great to watch these three teams coagulate and punctuate the season.

I video'd the final match, but my new phone conspires against me. ( #IHate MyNewPhone #WhoMovedMyCheese )

Team 1687 had a great time at Battlecry! Congratulations to the worthy winners; you guys were all powerhouses and played together seamlessly all afternoon. Huge thanks to 230 and 246 for joining our alliance and being fantastic partners in our run to the finals, and helping us to the best finish in team history. We look forward to playing with you again soon.

126, 3467, and 3499, what a semifinal series. Those were some of the most intense matches we've ever played, with some brutal defense from both alliances (our intake wasn't ever the same after SF1-2). You all had incredible machines, and both matches could have easily gone either way. Hope to be on the same side of the glass as you guys in the future.

Thanks to WPI and all the volunteers for putting on a phenomenal event as always!

Another intense BattleCry for sure! Thanks to WPI and all of the volunteers who made the biggest and longest event possible!

Congratulations to 4048, 2168, and 3719 for taking home the victory you three worked so well on the field making some beautiful three assist cycles so consistently. Enjoy your first win 4048 & 3719 its always the sweetest and BattleCry is one of the hardest events to win in New England! :)

Huge thanks to 126 Gael Force for inviting us to join your alliance it was a blast to finally get a chance to play with you during the eliminations! Hopefully we can do it more in the future! Skip5 Forever!

Thank you to 3499 for sticking through the long weekend and joining our alliance for the elimination rounds. Most of your weekend was spent trying to chase down mysterious problems and we know from experience they are not easy to find or remedy! You guys stuck through it and played very hard on the field with us!

Going out in the semis was not what we had hoped for but it was still a strong showing nonetheless. Unfortunately our shooter was damaged by the heavy defense of 246, 230, & 1687 and what looks like a few missed penalties but you win some you lose some. It just wasn't our day. :o

Overall our team had another great year at BattleCry! :)

One suggestion for future planning would be how to better go about the selection of the third robots for eliminations when there isn't an even amount of teams. Obviously careful planning cannot take into account how many teams will not be able to make it at the last second but in the future the selection of the additional robots for alliances should allow more time for said alliances to prepare. Selecting our third partner as we were putting our robots on the field for the first quarter finals left us with only moments to discuss strategy and no time for human players to practice inbounding to other robots or practice passing from one robot to another (something we know many of the other alliances had time to practice in addition to many having already played 1 or 2 matches on the field). In the future it might be better to select from the first 4 eliminated alliances and/or alter the schedule so the other quarter final match ups face off first. I wouldn't go as far as to say we were competitively hurt but it was a part of the event that rubbed me the wrong way as all teams should have a fair chance to plan for the elimination rounds.

ooooooh I just woke up...

I had the strangest dream, it started out like me and the team were moving through molasses, and everything was going wrong, you know those dreams? Like nothing was going right and there's nothing you can do about it?

And then the weirdest thing happened, even though we had this losing record, and we were ranked in the lower half, one minute later we were in the #3 alliance, and then all of the sudden, we won the whole event? Dreams are weird.

Luck has always been a factor in FIRST Robotics, but as I told the team, though there's nothing you can do about the bad luck, you have to be prepared to take advantage of the good luck when it comes your way.

But I have to admit that it was wildly good luck that the random pick out of the "Magic Box," was exactly the 3rd bot we would have selected if we had been given the first choice. It's also the alliance that could never have been put together in the traditional serpentine selection (because they would have been picked way before the 3rd alliance had a chance).

Battlecry's random 3rd bot assignment prevented teams from applying the normal selection strategy and consequently a lot of spectacular teams left the eliminations surprisingly early. But I hope it was half-as-wonderful to everyone else as it was for us just to see 3 robots blend their unique strengths into a single cohesive unit.

Condolences to Windham and GaelForce; I agree it was unfair to not know who your 3rd bot was going to be until minutes before the first match of quarters.

Thanks to Colleen and everyone at WPI for putting on the biggest event in New England, plus the whole social evening, that must have been quite a task.

Thanks to RedShift who saw us way down the list ranked at 32 yet recognized our capabilities (I suppose you remembered us from RI?). Thanks to STEM Whalers for persevering and making the one of the best inbounder/defense robots around. Good News for Southeastern CT, right?

Shouts to 195 (my favorite bot this year), GUS (always a pleasure), 716-181-2648 (you gave us fear), to the finalists 1687-230-246, and thanks to Aces, GaelHawks, AirStrike, NUTRONs, and a lot of other classy teams that we look toward for inspiration.

Stay geeky, yo.

Does anybody know if the entirety of the event was archived anywhere, and/or if the Wrap-Up video that was played after the award ceremony is available online?

I found that it skips less if you watch it in low quality. Not sure why it's like this, my guess is a bug in Livestream.

If you we'rent picked on the 3rd alliance you would have been on the 4th, you were #2 on our pick list right under 195 who we knew wouldn't be left. you had a really solid robot and a great drive team. i can't complain about 230 though, they as always were great and we loved to play along side them. If you asked our drive team, 230,2168 and 1058 just clicked with our plan and our style:cool:. We had a great time and it was a great experience to finally make it to the finals. battle cry was awesome as always, a big thanks to all the volunteers that made that possible.

Thanks for all of the nice comments about our team! This victory was particularly sweet because not only is this a young team (3rd year,) but our two drive teams in this competition were made up mostly of freshmen on their first tournament outing, coached by our great regular season senior drive team. The alliance with the Aluminum Falcons and the STEM Whalers was as close to perfect as it could be. A great victory for true collaboration.

Thanks again...

I had a great time refereeing this event! It was awesome seeing some familiar teams from the WPI District and meeting some new teams on the field. Battlecry is definitely an event I hope to continue to be at in the future year. And probably the best offseason I've attended in my 5 years involved with FRC.

Battlecry was fantastic once again! Great competition as usual and a very fun environment. Can't wait to come back next year.

Personal story of 1058's Battlecry: on the 5th seeded alliance, we felt pretty good about our chances, and then we picked team 1757 out of the hat in the random round of alliance selections. I was skeptical of our chances due to our previous matches with 1757 this season, but when I went to visit their pit before our first match to talk strategy, my opinion of them changed dramatically. 1757 was a team of 7 students, no mentors, only two functional batteries, limited tools, and no spare parts. Their students were working hard to figure out an electrical issue, and after some help from team 1073 we were able to get them onto the field. Their robot may not have been ideal for the alliance, but they stepped up big to do everything they could to help us win, and were willing to do any strategy to succeed. To see a team of 7 kids help an alliance like that was truly remarkable to see. It's kids like that that really make FIRST special. 1757, I can't wait to see what you guys bring to the table next year and I would love to work with you in the future.
