Hello again!
Team 1923: The MidKnight Inventors from West Windsor-Plainsboro, NJ are excited to announce the return of:

https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/378800000058510021/5c658eb5c980496a77e87cc5d17bc3e6.jpeg

THE MAYHEM RETURNS!
When: June 28, 2014
Where: West Windsor-Plainsboro HS North
90 Grovers Mill Rd, Plainsboro NJ

Just like last year, the cost will be $200 per team.
(Send us a message if you're interested in bringing a pre-rookie.)
Event Website (http://libbykamen.wix.com/midknightmayhem) here, with pages for team and volunteer registration.
Once you've filled out the team registration info, we'll contact you regarding payment.

In addition to up to 36 teams playing Aerial Assist, we'll be hosting FLL and FTC demos, as well as local groups that aren't just about robots. We are also hoping to host a team social, and some other fun activities, either Friday night before, or Saturday night after awards. (More info on that when we have it.)

If you have suggestions or recommendations for us, please feel free to leave them here in this thread, or email MidKnightMayhem@gmail.com. We're also available on Twitter (http://www.twitter.com/midknightmayhem) and Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/midknightmayhem).

We hope you'll help spread the word - last year we had a few teams from out of town, and we're happy to help them make accommodations. We want to make this a big, loud robot party here in Jersey, and we hope you'll be a part of it!

We were told that we'll have to use a team # that already exists for 2014 to be able to play them in the FMS... Otherwise we would absolutely be 1924. The same will apply for our practice robot's appearance at Monty Madness.

Actually Sean has a point, you can use 1924. You can have the FTA/Scorekeeper/Field Power enter a New Team, they just need to do it on Step 6 of the Event Wizard, (Hit New and just add the team in there).

A couple fields you need to make sure you fill out:
Location, Robot Name, Rookie Year, Nick Name and Team Name.

Since Beta is taken I think you should go with the Middle of the Afternoon Inventors.

Good to know. If that's truly the case we'll be using 1924.

The students voted - The MidKnight Marauders. (Since 'Knight' alludes to our founding high school's mascot, they wanted a little Pirate love in there too.) But thank you for the suggestions! :)

Midnight Marauders? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDDDKtAB3xc)

I'll co-sign the talk of non-existent numbers, as SCRIW has run a few not-active numbers in the past. (For example, 4901 was able to run as 4901 in 2013, despite not competing at an official FIRST event until 2014. Ditto 4452 in 2012.)

Whether 4901 comes to MKM or not, I might just have to find a way up there!

Working on it. The big issue there is that the school has to allow us to operate the event with only the gym's safety lights on. (Still pretty bright, so we don't think it'd be a big issue.) We've already taken care of lighting the field, but we're not going to move forward on that 'til the school gives us permission.

I'd like to second everyone who has said that it was a great event last year. Well-run, great volunteers, great teams, great venue. Also, the logo is sweet. I'm legitimately sad that I won't be able to make it this year :(

Added three more teams today, including another team from upstate NY!

11- MORT, Mt. Olive NJ
191 - X-Cats, Rochester NY
193 - MORT Beta, Mt. Olive NJ
225 - Tech Fire, York PA
303 - TEST Team, Bridgewater NJ
316 - LuNaTeCs, Carneys Point NJ
369 - High Voltage, Brooklyn NY
869 - Power Cord, Middlesex NJ
1403 - Cougar Robotics, Skillman NJ
1626 - Falcon Robotics, Metuchen NJ
1640 - Sab-BOT-age, Doenigtown, PA
1796 - RoboTigers, Long Island City NY
1923 - The MidKnight Inventors, Plainsboro NJ
1924 - The MidKnight Marauders, Plainsboro NJ * (1923 'beta' team, TBD)
2495 - Hamilton West Robotics, Hamilton, NJ
2607 - Fighting Robo Vikings, Warminster PA
3015 - Ranger Robotics, Spencerport NY
3607 - Technologic, Lambertville NJ
4454 - Artisinal Rocketeers, Philadelphia PA
4575 - The TIN Mints, Ridley PA
4954 - 4H Palindrome Robotics, Middletown DE

** 1924 has bowed out of Monty Madness to offer a team on the waitlist a spot. If we run into similar issues with MKM, or have a pre-rookie in need of an experience, then we don't think it would be fair to keep someone out just so we can put some more of our students on controls.

That makes 21 teams registered. 15 available slots left. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us, tweet us, or come say hello at Monty Madness in a few weeks!

For those teams coming from far-away, we'll be sending out an information packet on the WWP area, including hotels, entertainment, food etc nearby - after our next committee meeting. Stay tuned. :)

Are there specific volunteering roles you are looking to fill, certain roles you are looking to train for, and are there any restrictions on high school student volunteers in key roles?

(I think I know the answers for some, I'm just looking for some official-ness)

Right now we're pretty good, but could use some extra queuers/crowd control/field reset. (We've also not yet included 1923 student volunteers on that roster.)

We're happy to train anything that people are interested in - as an example, last year we had 'backup refs' to learn the role, and plan on having two refs per tablet again this year. If a high schooler is interested in training for a key role we'll be happy to consider them!

Wish we could go and work with 384 and 2607 again...but we have other plans for the off season. Plus were not a very big team and can only do so much.
Going to two regionals and CMP twice the past two years has come close to wiping us out. But we'll be back next year.

We do plan on inviting the Attitudes in Reverse (http://www.attitudesinreverse.org/) dogs (the ones in the lobby) back to the event. AIR is one of our favorite community groups to work with, and the dogs were a big hit.

DiscDogs were more of a special-thing because of the game - but there will certainly still be the therapy animal presence at MKM as long as everyone's schedule allows. :)

384 had to drop out, which means two spots remaining for MKM. We'll miss you, SPARKY!

I might cry :(

I was looking forward to seeing SPARKY again. The event should still be amazing - one that I will be proud to call my final offseason event as a team member of 2607.

Any word on offseason rule changes?

Also, is there a Friday load-in?

Libby K
13-06-2014, 13:35
Yes, there will be a friday load-in! 5-8pm. Connection tests/practice matches depending on how ready the field is.

(Team event info packets go out on Saturday, and all of that info is contained there as well.)

Rule changes TBD - but as soon as we make a decision, we'll post it here, on the website, and in the event packets.

Hope that helps!

Libby K
16-06-2014, 09:56
Apologies for the double-post, but we just sent out our info packet to teams with the agenda and rule changes, so I wanted to take a moment to post them here as well.

Agenda:
Friday 6/27:
5-8pm Pits available for load-in

Saturday 6/28:
8am: Doors Open to teams
8:30am: Opening Ceremonies
8:45am-12:45pm: Qualifying Matches
1:00pm: Alliance Selections
1:15pm: Lunch, with Mentor Match rounds!
2:00pm-4:30pm: Elimination Rounds
5pm: Closing Ceremonies

Rule Changes:
(these may look somewhat familiar)

1. 4-Team Alliances for Elimination Rounds. Top ranked teams will select 1-8, 8-1, 1-8 for alliance pairings. Each eliminations alliance will have four teams, and the goal is for all four teams to play at least once during the elimination tournament. The alliance must notify the field staff of the three teams they choose to play in each match, and one member from the non-playing team may be part of the drive team group and considered a Coach.

2. There is no zone requirement for possession.

3. A 4th ball may be used for autonomous during both qualification and elimination rounds. If the 4th ball is used, another robot is not required to touch that ball. All other autonomous rules are unchanged.

4. The basic foul of G21 is removed. Continuous/repeated violations will still be a technical foul. Contact outside of the safety zone will still be enforced.

5. G12 will be modified so that an immediately rectified possession of the opposing alliance ball (from a truss shot, human player, or field crew action) will not be penalized.

6. To Be Announced: The "Mayhem Rule!". Much like other offseasons, we're planning on incorporating something fun and different in the game - but for the moment, we're leaving it a surprise. Don't worry - nothing we choose will require robot modification - this extra bit will be able to be played with your existing machines.

Less than two weeks to go, and we're really looking forward to it. Hope you are too!

New Edit: Back down to 35 teams.
3607 Technologic had to back out. This does leave one open spot for any teams still looking to register.

The "MidKnight Mayhem GDC" is working on its last versions of the Mayhem Rule.

Get excited! It's gonna be crazy.

Since we're at 32 teams (with one question-mark), we are still leaving event registration open to any teams that might want to sign up, even this late in the game. This includes existing MKM teams that might want to bring a practice bot (as long as it functions with the field) for extra hands-on experience. As long as it hooks up to the field & has competition-legal bumpers, we're all for it. Register on the site or email midknightmayhem@gmail.com if you're interested.

3 days left to go, and we have two updates that we think merit a double-post.
(Sorry!)
Just sent out an email to all confirmed MKM team contacts with some event info, but here are the two big things:

#1: Power distribution in the Pit area: We request that each team bring their own 14-gauge, 50-foot extension cord (at least one). Please label it with your team number so that we can get it to its rightful home at the end of the day. MAR is not supplying power distribution equipment this year for off-seasons, and our generous sponsors at Princeton Plasma Physics Lab (PPPL) have donated a generator and all the necessary equipment to power our pit area, but we will need teams' help in routing power to each individual pit in the gym. If you cannot provide one for your team, please let us know, and we'll work to accommodate you.

#2: The "Mayhem Rule": As dictated in the rule changes document in our last update, we are adding our own flair to the event. The 2014 "Mayhem Rule" is as follows:

The "Mayhem Ball": One marked MAYHEM BALL will be placed on the truss prior to each match. The MAYHEM BALL will be put into play at whichever point during the match it falls or is knocked off the truss. Once a MAYHEM BALL is put into play, it is fair game to be carried by either alliance, and may change possessions between alliances if it is so manipulated by the robots. (note: All Aerial Assist robot contact rules will be enforced, and stealing your opponent's MAYHEM BALL by damaging them or contacting them inside the bumper zone will be heavily penalized.)

When the MAYHEM BALL is scored in an alliance's goal, the alliance will receive a 20 point bonus (to be added to the score at the conclusion of the match). The MAYHEM BALL does not accrue assist/truss/catch points. If a MAYHEM BALL goes out of play without being scored, it is returned to the nearest human player from where the ball exited the field. Once the MAYHEM BALL is scored, it is no longer available to the teams in that match -- so grab it while you can!

Johnbot
26-06-2014, 15:45
I assume the Mayhem Ball is 20 points in addition to the point value of the goal it is scored in? (I.e. 30 points total for a high goal, 21 for a low goal?)

And isn't 20 points just a little low? I know that that can turn the tides of a match, but this late in the season the match scores seem to be able to go much higher.

The whole idea does sound awesome, though!

Yep, goal + 20, but no assists or truss points on it.

We didn't want to make anything match-breaking, just a fun alternative that teams could add to their match strategy. :)

Anyone else having trouble with the livestream?

Sorry - our webcast went down mid-afternoon due to an issue with the wi-fi. We apologize!

----

Thank you so much, to all the teams and volunteers, for making MKM awesome. I know I've said this a lot, but this event is one of my favorite parts of the year, and it's the collection of a lot of hard work of some great people - Kathy Rogers, Katie Stevens, Jeff Bunca and of course all of the 1923 parent and student volunteers that helped us bring everything together.

If you've got any feedback on the event to improve for MKM in 2015, please definitely send it my way -- we'll definitely put it to use for next year.

Terrific event! better then last years. Loved the lighting and the mentor matches. Congrats to 225 for sweeping the competition again!

MKM 2014 was an awesome event! 4454 had a lot of fun!

Congrats to the alliance of 25, 225, 1626 and 329 for winning it all. You guys were awesome, and the finals matches were some of the best I've seen!

11, 193, 369 and 4954; it was fun playing against you guys. That 11/193 combo is a tough one to beat, hope to see it again before next season.

1923, 2590, 2607; it was a lot of fun playing with you guys. Apologies for that Q-3 match, we had one of those "one in a thousand" things happen, one of the contacts in the anderson connector on the battery slipped out halfway and was intermittent (and only died on the field).

We'll see everyone next year!

I'm finally somewhat lucid after a 14-hour train ride and a day of work, but I am seriously glad that I came up to MKM. It was a lot of fun to catch up with old MAR (and close-enough-to-MAR) friends on their home turf, see some robots we don't see down south, and just see some hard-nosed friendly competition!

Congrats to all eight teams involved in the finals on a heck of a fight, and to all 32 teams for keeping them running to make 4-team alliances happen. (I know from experience that this is not a given at off-season events!) The Mayhem Ball was a great touch too--just enough of a touch to make teams switch strategies without really breaking the game. Oh, and thanks to 225 for the box of pneumatics for everyone.

Hopefully, I can sway enough 4901ers to make a run up there next year. It's worth 14 hours on the train for sure! :)

I drove a lot. It was fun to watch. I lived my dream as a human player. Learned a lot. May play along next year, or maybe not. See you cool MAR cats at Brunswick Eruption.

You were quite the human player. Pegging the ball from the HP station at the Mayhem Ball to knock it off was A+ work

I understand completely. 2607 has been no stranger to incredibly rare, and incredibly unfortunate, failures. (We sat dead-on-the-field during our first qualifier at MAR Champs last year due to a bad cRIO boot, and at Hatboro Horsham this year we were doing quite well until we essentially lost our drivetrain due to a Jaguar failue.) I could not have wished for a better event, though. It was a lot of fun!

So everyone who was at MKM 2014 probably remembers the highlight reel that was shown right before alliance selection. This is something of a tradition we have started, the challenge is to record footage of all competing robots the day of the competition, edit it together to music and make it look good. Then show it so that all of the teams have a fresh perspective of which robot is which. This is somewhat of a daunting tasks, but our video guys know their stuff and have yet to miss the mark! The link is below, would love to hear what you guys think!

Thank you so much for posting Jeff! Nick and Andy (our video crew) rocked HARD on this highlight reel and I'm so glad it's up and online for people to view. :)

Those midknight highlight reels are an astounding tradition at MKM. The first time I saw one - at the first MKM IIRC - it was jaw-dropping that they got all that together so quickly. And yes, it was actually quite good, so much more than just a random mash of robot clips.

Don't take my word for it. Go see this year's video, link above...
