QP(R,N,a)=abs(InvERF((N-2R+2)/aN)(10/InvERF(1/a))+12)

R is the Rank, N is the Number of teams at the event, a is 1.07 (normalization). Now if I can just figure out the what the InvERF stands for, we're all set.

Have you seen this (http://www.usfirst.org/sites/default/files/uploadedFiles/Robotics_Programs/FRC/Game_and_Season__Info/2015/2015%20FRC%20District%20Qualification%20Points%20F ormula%20Breakdown.pdf) document?

Oh, THAT's where it was! I thought I'd seen something explaining the system. Will adjust the spoiler. And if an event you're scoring has the number of teams in the tables... well, now, seems like it'd be a bit of a pain to use the equation a bunch of times, no?

If someone shoots me the scores I can shoot up a current FF ranking doc.

I recreated the formula in in excel (I think). With events that have 24 - 70 teams. It looks correct but I am not totally sure.

Here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Gwsql6LBypaJ6VljJYjkoZe2dvZfqvklu4iHxUXDlP4/edit?usp=sharing) is the just Numbers version on Google Docs.

That's not quite right. For example, in the "37" column you have the 4th rank team getting 20 points, when in reality (http://frc-districtrankings.usfirst.org/MAR/PAHAT) they got 19 points.

I've added the script I've been using (which, as far as I can tell, has been consistent with the official rankings) to your spreadsheet. You can find it under Tools->Script Editor. I'm put my values on another page in your spreadsheet.

If you want to use the script just type "=points(N, R)" where N is the number of teams and R is the rank.

Are we following the district point model to a tee? Just want to verify if the age bonus is in the equation.

I believe that we are only using the district scoring for qualification ranking. And nothing else. But the official word would be from EricH.

Just for rankings. We award no points for age (unless the team happens to win one of the rookie awards--but those are awards points).

OK, folks, it's just past Week 4, and I still haven't seen scores other than Northern Lights. This could be a problem...

We need to start scoring regional events, and fairly quickly. District events can wait, but not for very long, because we need to draft two of them (PNW and Indiana) for Week 6. I can handle running those, I think.

Regional and district scores become Championship draft order; last year we had a problem where Week 6 drafts didn't get scored. So let's get busy on this.

I'm going to start scoring Week 1. I'll be using the previously-linked ranking table (second tab) for rank points, and adding in awards points. I'll try to get a GDoc up for calculating team scores (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tz-sXpesRw8anfe4qJ1vJPeImiQXy_sojnpL0Y5Gilk/edit#gid=0), and modify the "alliance" one where all the alliances are for player scores from each event.

Think I'll start with Superior, and work my way through week by week. Anybody wants to score a given event, go for it. Many hands make light work and all that.

[Edit:] Superior is complete, and up. Team scores are calculated in the linked Gdoc--insert rankings, add a "1" in any box for an award the team won or position they finished in. It's a template, so I'll try to have two or three tabs all the same so multiple people can score at once. I've transplanted the team scores to sheet #2 of the alliance document.

If you're scoring and find a team that is picked but didn't make the event, grab a handy random team to fill the spot.

Just so everybody's aware...

I will be publishing the total scores by week when each week is complete, but if anybody wants them I can post them sooner, or work a specific event out of "sequence".

Current status: Superior and Georgia Southern I've done, and I've used MAldridge's Northern Lights numbers.

Oh, and I have now unlocked the scoring template. Try to pick a sheet that isn't actively being used (and if you're working, post the event code in the top left...)

Unless someone beats me to it, I'll see about finishing up Week 1 tomorrow. After that I've really only got one good scoring day until the following Monday.

And I adjusted the Northern Lights numbers in the (not currently online) spreadsheet I'm tracking scores in.

If teams are not present at a regional, should I just use the next available one off the random list?

ex.
It looks like 5743, 2424, 2352, 5729, and 5656 were missing from Rock City, so Orange Juice would get 4745, RPA would get 3179 and 1209 and Koko's X-Cats would get 2040 and 1785.

Correct. Or, any random team off the random list will work.

In general about 50% of the ranking points per team is one less than shown in the gdoc.

In general about 50% of the ranking points per team is one less than shown in the gdoc.

Are you referring to the first or second page of the gdoc? The second page has the numbers that match the official ones (http://frc-districtrankings.usfirst.org/) and are the ones (presumably) being used for FF.

I'll be using the previously-linked ranking table (second tab) for rank points

District events can wait, but not for very long, because we need to draft two of them (PNW and Indiana) for Week 6. I can handle running those, I think.

I've been working on scoring all 5 of those, I won't be able to post the scores until all the Districts have finished though, since we're averaging the teams first two events, and some haven't finished their 2nd event (Unless we changed that and I missed it)

I've been using the second tab when I score.

Also, for Joseph and everybody else: The average for district teams is across all district events that that team attends, in or out of their home district.

I get the impression that some folks are thinking that "oh, we're doing the district rankings, means we're doing this the district way". That is not the case. Rankings, yes, we are using the district numbers. Everything else is different, or at the very least not intentionally the same, on this end at least. I can't speak for the district folks because I know that back in the early days of FiM, they asked what scores FF used.

So if a team attends 3 district events we score all 3? Even though the 3rd doesn't count for regular district points.

Yup, score all their district events, then average the scores. That's the final score for a team in a district format.

Here's the Doc I'm using to score the Districts http://goo.gl/CnXsCt

Please note Rankings up date live as I'm scoring and may/may not reflect final rankings. Also note that FIM, MAR, and NE still have Week 6 District events and won't be final until the Sunday night after.

PNW and IN will be final Saturday Night.

So, ran into a small hiccup while scoring IN. 3176 seeded 8th and didn't make elims. I got confused so did some digging around and got this.

"On Sunday we had a snowstorm and students from 3176 could not attend. Others drove the robot and 3176 seeded 8. They elected not to play in playoffs but were awarded points as if they would have played in the spot they earned."

How do I go about scoring this? I can either give them 0 elim points, or give them the points IN gave them.

I'll see about hitting a couple of regionals later today. Can I see some green bars on previously-scored regionals in the overall document so I don't duplicate effort?

BEFORE that happens, though:

Plan on Indiana Championship being tomorrow night, and PNW Championship being either tomorrow night or Wednesday night depending on volunteering to run it. I might have to adjust the start times.

Let's see here...

We're going to be applying a late start for Indiana, at 7:45 PM Eastern (I'm holding on full setup for this one until shortly before, to make sure we've got as many teams as possible registered). To try to end earlier, I'll be dropping the first-round time to 4 minutes per pick.

The draft order: Same as Indiana player rankings.
The random list: Reverse order of Indiana team rankings.

Draft adjustments: If you want to change teams, you'll have until the event starts to do so.

The warning: I seem to recall issuing a warning to SuperPowerMatic to show up for future drafts, right at the end of the regular season.

Incidentally, PNW will follow the same path on Wednesday unless someone volunteers to run it tomorrow night.

Has a decision been made yet?

Just for the record: I was sound asleep when the question was first asked, and only got home from work about 10 minutes ago (and I don't check CD at work). Just for the record. I'd just realized that myself.

Yes, we will be running two tiers. Rank 1, 3, 5, etc in IN will be in Tier 1; Rank 2, 4, 6, etc will be in Tier 2. It's going to take me a couple of minutes to reset, but the draft won't officially start until 7:45 EST.

Edit: And the tiers are up. It'll take me another few minutes to finish all the setup and all that, but pick when your turn is up.

EricH
31-03-2015, 21:08
With Indiana now run (thanks to the half of the league who did show up), it's time to set up for PNW Champs. Just like today, only it should be a single tier.

Start time, 7:45 PM EST.
Drafting top-to-bottom in terms of PNW rank for players.
Random list will be the attending teams in reverse order of points scored.

And some news, or not:

SuperPowerMatic has missed 5 drafts in a row, most of them two-day block drafts. If he does not show up for PNW Champs, he will not be included in any further drafts this season.

4/6 (Monday), New England
4/7 (Tuesday), MAR
4/8 (Wednesday), Michigan. Given the double-sized event, I'm seriously considering a (singular) bonus round in drafting (4-round event).

So how does a tie break work for determining picking order?

Averages are rounded, whoever has the true best average takes it. If they are truly tied, the whoever has the best score for the 3rd team.

So how does a tie break work for determining picking order?

In the case of the MAR draft...

TBC wins the tiebreak over Pure MI, 232.3 - 230.0
TYA wins the tiebreak over Sharp Cheddar, 219.2 - 219.0

http://gyazo.com/926d4a6f425d03b99d310e3c3d51e03d

TBC's and TYA's last picks also win the second tie-breaker.

In other news, I'm going to need to know how to score the rankings at FIM, This (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Gwsql6LBypaJ6VljJYjkoZe2dvZfqvklu4iHxUXDlP4/edit#gid=270416226) only goes up to 70, and I still don't understand the formula. FIM is sitting at 103 teams at the moment.

I'm going to have to get back to ya on that. I'm thinking we need some special scoring adjustments anyways: Octofinals, anybody?

I'll see what I can do in the next 24 hours to figure out what's up. (Maybe including expanding the sheet?)

I went ahead and added a column with the values for a 103-team list, according to wolframalpha. Equation used is here (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=ceiling%28erf%5E-1%28%28103-2R%2B2%29%2F%281.07*103%29%29*%2810%2Ferf%5E-1%281%2F1.07%29%29%2B12%29+for+R%3D1+to+103).

Me again, with a couple of items.

FIRST: The MSC draft will remain open for trades until NOON Pacific time tomorrow, 4/9, rather than locking in an hour from this post like it normally would. I'd like to apologize for the stop-and-start nature of the draft, and the late ending. (Note: this doesn't apply to MAR or NE, sorry folks).

Second: Can I get a scoring update with a number of events to go and current point tallies? (I'll try to help, can't guarantee I don't get sidetracked.) Also for the scorers, particularly Joseph, I'll be going over MSC points sometime very very shortly because I anticipate some big changes.

And finally: Once MSC is locked, the regular season will have ended. We'll draft Champs by division, standard 3-team draft, once the divisions are up. I know I already asked for some volunteers to help out, so I'll try to get everybody a turn in the pressure cooker. ;) I'll also post a score reminder for everybody; I'm debating whether or not to make any adjustments due to the increased size of the elims field.

I'm going to have to get back to ya on that. I'm thinking we need some special scoring adjustments anyways: Octofinals, anybody?

Sheet's been expanded, yay.

Now, for whoever is scoring MSC:
All points will be awarded as normal, EXCEPT:
Quarterfinals are now worth 6 points.
And the reason for that point increase? Octofinals (you know, the round with 16 alliances) are worth 3 points.

For FRC Championships: I still need to look at the scoring on that again. I would anticipate some adjustment to Einstein teams, and possibly some of the awards.

4x (four days) two-a-days (two drafts/day). Looks like a slight wire-crossing: I ain't gonna go 4 drafts in one day, no way no how!

I started a little slow today as I worked out the kinks, but I can now realistically pump out a regional score in about 5 minutes...

Today's Progress:

Los Angeles
Utah
Peachtree
Smokey
Orlando
NYC
Long Island
Las Vegas

Looks like we have 21 Regionals (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BgVqsl_8DzYL7p5y2CnwphnwzpH-kk4U7YbRgBHffRI/edit#gid=486596443) left to score?

Arizona East & West added to the list, calling it quits for the night.

So, divisions are out. Sorry Bryce, 503 isn't in Hopper.

I went ahead and made a quick google sheet with columns for every division. Found here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bypIhc0VM5nfuU5cWi-jGEOXXAXWqMSeyulBfUqYDPo/edit?usp=sharing).

EricH

OK, divisions are out. So that means that it's time for the draft schedule...

Saturday, 4/18, 7 PM EST
Archimedes
Tesla

Sunday, 4/19, same time
Curie
Hopper

Monday, 4/20, same time
Galileo
Carson

Tuesday, 4/21: Time TBD but likely around the same timeframe.
Newton
Carver

Draft order: The most current standings list, in order from first to last (and then the whole serpentine thing for 2nd and 3rd rounds). 3 rounds/draft. BTW, this does mean that any events scored after the first draft will be counted for draft order for the next.

If my notes are correct, three FF teams (LTown, Swamp Life, Daedalite) missed all of the DCMP drafts. Am I going to boot them? Nope. Their penalty is that until they make a pick (or indicate they'll be live-drafting), I'm going to assume that they aren't showing up, which means a random team.

Now, random teams for Champs may or may not actually be random... If I can find a list of QA or OPR or FF points for 'em, I might be starting from the middle of that list, as is typical, or the bottom, which is what was used for DCMPs... Or I might just do random.

Oh, er, yeah. Championship scoring. From the rules:
For the Championships, scoring changes to:
Quarter finalists – Division, 5 points
Semifinalists – Division, 10 points
Finalists – Division, 15 points
Divisional Winners, 25 points
Finalists - Einstein Field, 40 points
Winners - Einstein Field, 50 points

Chairman’s – Championship, 80 points
Engineering Inspiration Award – Championship, 45 points
Rookie All-Star, 25 points
Rookie Inspiration, 20 points
Woodie Flowers/Judges, 15 points
Dean’s List, 8 points

Highest score / Highest Rookie Seed, 10 points
Robot based award, 25 points
Non-placement award, except previously mentioned, 10 points
[Ranking Points as we've been playing with all season]

This does beg the obvious question of Einstein Semifinalists. I'm considering what to do with that (and any awards adjustments).

This does beg the obvious question of Einstein Semifinalists. I'm considering what to do with that (and any awards adjustments).

Consideration over...
Anything at the Division or Subdivision level stays the same, including the awards, which stay the same EXCEPT for CCA and EI.
Semifinalist, Einstein Division - 35 points
Finalist, Einstein Division, AKA World Finalist - 50 points
WORLD CHAMPION (Winner, Einstein Division just doesn't sound as nice)- 60 points

(Yes, I did just classify the whole Einstein competition as a division. It's the size of a small district... and I can remember hearing about even smaller regionals.)

And, as you might notice, that could make World Champion worth just a smidge more points than CCA if the rankings work out right--a move that is generally regarded as "rather uncool" around here. So, of course, we can't have that--and come to think of it, EI is in a little bit of the same predicament at the Division level.

Championship Chairman's: 90 points
Engineering Inspiration: 50 points

Now might be a good time to protest the increased values if you're going to do that; they won't be changing after the drafting starts but I'm open to making a reasonable adjustment before then. You are also welcome to ask for the reasoning.

Hmm... I could use a quick hand from the scoring team. You see, there are some traditional awards given by SLFF to various teams and/or individuals. (Note, no actual hardware is handed out--but I will try to make sure the teams know.)

Elgin Clock Award: Named after the winner of the first Championship FF event; awarded to the player at the top of the standings at the end of regionals and the District Championships.
Fantasy FIRST Champion: Awarded to the player who scores the most points at the Championship event. (BTW, everybody starts at zero for the Championship.)
FF MVP: Given to the (actual) team who scores the highest number of FF points at an event during the FF regular season.
FF Rookie of the Year: Given to the (actual) rookie team who scores the highest number of FF points at an event during the FF regular season.

Obviously the first two are in progress or to be drafted. Anybody got any line on the last two?

I just finished scoring the following events this evening:

Central Valley*
Greater DC
Colorado
Silicon Valley
Lone Star
North Star
Chesapeake
San Diego
10K Lakes
Queen City

I will let Brennan and Joseph confirm, but I think that means scoring for all events is now complete. I believe that the only thing left is to add these to the overall rankings.

Archimedes will be up shortly. I need someone to handle Tesla.

Tomorrow: Curie/Hopper, 7 PM EST. I'll take Curie unless someone else wants it.

Monday: Galileo/Carson, 7 PM EST. I can take either.

Tuesday: I've got a bit of a wrench thrown into my plans on Newton/Carver. I can take one, but I'm going to have to suspend the draft at some point if I do. Unless other folks take both, I'll be opening Newton on Monday night.

Well... Let's put it this way, the Monday wrench isn't an issue (at least, not as much as I thought it might be). Look for GALILEO to go up right about the time Hopper finishes.

Tuesday is still going to be a bit of an issue. But... I figure with enough notice, Newton should be running way ahead, right? Look for NEWTON to go up about an hour after Galileo--open for picking and all--with the official opening being Tuesday.
