With the passing of another IRI into the record websites, it’s time for another season of Fantasy FIRST! This year, with there being multiple leagues planned, the tag “Traditional” is going to be used for the classic full-season, every-event-gets-a-draft format. Miss 5 drafts in a row and you get a warning; ignore the warning and you’re out of the league. I'm not gonna require any selection lists now because I don’t know when most of the events are gonna be, but be ready when drafting starts because it’ll be fast and furious! Trades of teams and/or draft slots are allowed if everybody involved agrees. Teams of up to 5 players are allowed; if the entire team from last season is still around just drop the name and team members’ names in.

Full rules are located at http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2574

Drafting will start the day after Thanksgiving, assuming the event schedule allows for that.

Incidentally, there are some changes to the traditional format that need some highlighting. (Changing part of the league operations is also traditional.)

The biggest change is that there are no drafts for individual districts. Those took up half of the drafts last year, and the number was projected to rise. That, plus the tendency to plunk new districts in halfway through drafting season, drove this change. The new format for districts is that there will be a single draft of up to 6 rounds for each district area (FiM, MAR, NE, PNW, and IN), with any draft of over 4 rounds being spread over two days. Each team will get its average FF score from all districts it competes in. Still being considered: shuffling the random drafting order between days, and how to deal with timing of list locks and competition-season trades inside the district system.

The other major change is in the waiver system's treatment of teams that add into an event after the event's draft is over. In the past, they'd go to a traditional waiver; this is being changed to a "Challenge Waiver". Pick up the team at your own risk; someone who is higher on the waiver priority list at the time you pick 'em up can challenge you (and thus potentially force a trade, although maybe not for that particular team), with multiple challenges sending the team to the next running of the traditional waiver, which will remain in force for all teams left after a player is removed from the league. (As for why this change is being made: I'm getting lazy and forgetful. ;) Actually, it's pretty demanding running waivers, and having to go in and check for teams adding can take a while.)

One or two other tweaks/clarifications that I forgot to mention earlier: W-L record will not be counted during eliminations. This particular tweak comes about to make life easier on the scorers, while still keeping the RCA as the highest-scoring award (previously, winning the event would equal the RCA when W-L was factored in).

And, just for the record, if a team is known to be in contention for an award at an event, but not have their robot at the event, that team may be selected anyway. They will either get that award's score or nothing. Drafter's call on how much they feel like gambling.

For districts will we still get a new draft for the District Champs?

EricH

For districts will we still get a new draft for the District Champs?

Yes. One draft for all the events in weeks 1-6 (aka all the teams in the district), one for the DCMP.

I'm working on the schedule as events get added. Right now I'm looking at running the district drafts between Christmas and New Year's Eve (12/26-12/30) at the rate of one new and one continuing per night. "Continuing": Many of the district drafts will be run as multi-night drafts, probably with a reshuffle of the draft order between nights. I'm targeting each player/team picking 4-6 teams per district draft, depending on how many players we've got, but a 6-round draft on one night will be just about suicide for all concerned, so I'll be splitting most of 'em into two nights and probably changing up the draft order between the nights as well.

If everything works out, we might be able to sneak in a few off days into the bargain. (Har, har. At least we don't have to sneak a district that crops up late-season into the schedule somewhere.)

Question for y'all: If you had to make a choice between a shorter season with mostly two-a-day drafts, or a slightly longer season with more one-a-day drafts, which would you pick? The current anticipated scheduling is looking like we'd be mighty close on draft slots for a post-Thanksgiving start. I figure that we can squeeze 68 events in on two-a-days, and I can account for 64 events, scheduled or rumored (counting each district draft as two events).

Hopefully we don't get any more events--we're up to 66/68 drafting slots filled by my count (in the 34 available drafting days), counting rumored and expected events. I'm going to target shorter and more packed if I can. (Fallback if two or more events add is to add a week at the start of draft season, and sprinkle 1-draft nights around a bit more liberally.)

I would also like to make a note regarding scores for interdistrict play. For all scorers: A district team, playing in districts, is drafted in and has its score counted towards its home district only. You draft 'em in their home district, you get the average score across all district events attended, home or away. However, a district team playing in a regional is counted the same as any other team at that regional, no points are earned towards the district. Example: 67 goes down to Lafayette for a district. They cannot be selected by someone in the IN draft; their MI draft will cover the IN additional event. 217, however, goes to Midwest. They will be available to draft in Midwest, for the number of points earned at Midwest--no effect on their MI score.

EricH
26-09-2014, 15:52
And now, we have a schedule. I don't anticipate any changes to the event roster except maybe in the districts (which don't count towards this schedule anyways--see the block drafts at the end).

Google Calendar (https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=kfdvkbgg89q1pkklajvlc16dcg%40group.calen dar.google.com&ctz=America/Los_Angeles): If you're interested in running a draft, make sure to pick a day you'll be available. (It's currently not set up for draft runners to edit--drop me a PM or a post and that can be changed.)

And we're down around a month to go in signup before the player list is set. Anybody thinking of signing up, please do so by Thanksgiving so we've got a day or two to get drafts up. As a reminder, there is limit of 5 missed drafts in a row before you get a warning from me about needing to show up, so think carefully, and start planning accordingly.

I've had one or two questions about lists, namely format. Just put your list in a vertical column with the team you want first at the top, and get it to the draft runner(s) somehow. Google spreadsheet, PM, posted Excel sheet with a password, you name it, it'll work. Can't find a draft runner? Send it to me and I'll make sure it gets to whoever's supposed to run that draft.

Speaking of draft runners... Could use some help here. I know James has signed up for a few spots, but speaking from experience this is more than a 2-person operation. If you look at the description in the calendar, it should have who's running that draft. If there's a draft day that you happen to be available, and you think you'd like to run a draft, let me know. (And if you happen to want to run one of the drafts that I'm running, I'll gladly swap to the other one on that night.) I especially need runners on Tuesdays in early December, as I won't be available due to prior commitments.

If you click the event title, it'll pop up a balloon. In some of those balloons, there's a "Description" line--if that's present, it tells who's running the draft. (On my copy of the calendar, it'll highlight a color--but apparently that didn't translate over when I made it public.)

To make things a little clearer, I need help on the following drafts:
11/28 Northern Lights
12/1 Inland Empire
12/2 Greater Pittsburgh and Greater Toronto Central
12/3 Mexico City
12/4 Israel
12/5 Utah

12/11 Tech Valley
12/12 North Carolina
12/13 Virginia
12/14 Wisconsin

12/16 Buckeye and Hawaii

12/20 North Bay

12/22 Silicon Valley
12/23 San Diego *
12/24 North Star
12/26 Midwest

12/28 Alberta
12/29-30 MAR District (2 parts)*
12/30-1/2 PNW District (2 parts)*
1/2 Indiana District*
*Depending how schedule actually works out, I may be available to cover one or more drafts on these days.

Note that if you'd rather run the other draft on any given day, I'll swap, no problem.

Could be. I'll have to look at it. (Another oddity: The public share says that the times are in Pacific. They're not supposed to be... I might have to take it off public view for a bit to clean it up.)

Every other day--is that the odd days or the even days?

I cannot commit to any drafts til after I know what's up with my job situation after November 21st. If I'm working straight nights I can't do anything. If everything stays as is I can do most drafts.

I am going to try my best to make all the drafts that I signed up for, If I won't be able to it will be known days beforehand so hopefully someone will cover for me. BTW any students on here take advantage of your clear work/school schedule while you can, because one day you will walk into work and your boss will tell you: "Hey we want you to start working nights for half the week" You will then respond with "Which Half" to which they will respond with "Haven't decided yet, just wanted to see if you would argue about it" -_-

Just wanted to note, if you can't find anyone to run a draft send me a PM and I'll be willing to do a few. I did a few as needed last season.

And after running through the calendar again, this time to add orangemoore on even days (aside from 12/30--the only items running that day are 2-day block drafts), it looks like we are set for anything after 12/13 (exceptions being San Diego, both drafts on 12/16, and most of the 2-day block drafts in the last week).

That means that early-season is where we're hurting for draft runners. Available events:

11/28 (Friday): Northern Lights Regional
12/1 (Monday): Inland Empire Regional*
12/2 (Tuesday): Greater Pittsburgh Regional
12/3 (Wednesday): Mexico City Regional
12/5 (Friday): Utah Regional
12/7 (Sunday): GTR East Regional
12/8 (Monday): Alamo Regional
12/10 (Wednesday): Bayou Regional
12/12 (Friday): North Carolina Regional
12/16 (Tuesday): Buckeye Regional & Hawaii Regional
12/23 (Tuesday): San Diego Regional**
12/29-12/30 (Monday-Tuesday): MAR District (2-day block draft)
12/30-1/1 (Tuesday and Thursday): PNW District (2-day block draft)

*I can run this if nobody else steps up. I'd greatly prefer NOT to run it, though, and will be taking random teams there regardless.
**I may be able to run this, but can't commit until about a week beforehand.

The good news is, we still have two weeks to figure out that first open slot, take names for more players, and figure out a T-shirt design (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/blog-Shirts-for-2015-Kickoff). (Kidding on the last one, though I was thinking of issuing a challenge to HQ to field a team. Then I remembered they'd have one of the most dominant SLFF players from the past.)

There is now one week left before the close of registration and the start of drafting season.

I still need draft runners for Northern Lights (11/28), Georgia Southern (11/29), and Inland Empire (12/1) to open the season. As a reminder, we've only got 3 possible makeup dates, and one of those happens to be the same day as Inland Empire.

With less than a week before drafting begins, I'd like to take a moment to issue a couple of reminders.

1) If you miss 5 drafts in a row, you'll be getting a warning. Miss the next night's drafts, you're out. For the record, the first warnings would be going out no earlier than 11/30 (Dallas/South Florida), with the first boot(s) no earlier than 12/1 (Inland Empire).

2) To avoid having to deal with #1, all teams are encouraged to send in lists. Don't know who the draft runner is? Send 'em to me, I'll get 'em to the runner(s).

And, by way of schedule reminder and knowing who's running which draft, at least for the first week...

Note the empty spots--somebody needs to fill those as far as draft running. (We could also try running three drafts in one day, or running drafts consecutively instead of concurrently, but I consider those to be last-ditch measures.)

Registration is still open... but not for long. I'll close that at midnight EST on 11/27 (AKA, in about 22.5 hours).

Once that happens, I expect to have the first draft up shortly afterwards. All drafts for this league will use the tag [TSL] to distinguish them from any other leagues that happen to be drafting at the same time.

Got a couple of quick administrative notes for y'all.

1) We've got 3 teams that didn't show up for the first two drafts. SuperPowerMatic, Swamp Life, and Mastermind all missed cleanly. I suspect Team Guh... was not paying full attention, missing one draft and making the other. I would like to remind everybody that if you can't make it, sending a note saying that you want randoms does count as attending. Remember, it's 5 drafts to the first warning, which is about 3 days.

2) We still need a draft runner for Georgia Southern tomorrow night. I'll take lists for that until one is found, then forward the lot of 'em. Worst case scenario... I think I can handle two full drafts at once. (I'm on Palmetto, in case y'all needed a reminder.)

3) For anybody wanting to cover said draft, or any future drafts... We've got some help. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/3042 is a document that will automate the process to a large extent--note that it is a macro-enabled spreadsheet, so you'll need to make sure macros are enabled. And http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2880 has a bunch of tips and tricks.

4) I've put a Google Doc (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L82EHqb_K-APfLNFMptayvpqhp6kerIbiWwurkQrEwM/edit?usp=sharing) up with the overall current selections out of Superior. I think our scorers would appreciate it if all drafts ended up on there.

5) And a couple quick, quick notes: Just remember that if the person in front of you has picked, your slot is open. Thus, as of this writing (edit, 9:53 PM EST), the first pick may be made in Palmetto.

Option 1: run two drafts at once (until GSC finishes).
Option 2: Punt GSC to Monday and run it in parallel with IE, give you all one slow draft day early.

I asked my sanity what it thought. It didn't answer, so I assume I've lost it somewhere.

Option 1 it is! Starting at 7:05, and oughtta be done by the time the first round of Palmetto finishes.

Go ahead and get your lists in for Dallas when you can. I'm going to be a bit later than last night at getting it up. (The drafting program I use worked just fine on one-tier drafts, but threw lots of curveballs at me on the 2-tier draft we just had. I'm trying to work some kinks out.)

Edit: It's up now, I think the kinks are worked out (at least enough to not affect anything--if you've downloaded the file, there's a new version out with the fixes), and the random list is:

While everybody's popping in and out to make their picks...

Still need one or more draft runners for Inland Empire (tomorrow night), Greater Pittsburgh (Tuesday night) and Mexico City (Wednesday night). I could handle IE, but I would really, really, really prefer not to need to. I won't be available on Tuesday to run Pittsburgh.

Theoretically, we could pull either Pittsburgh or Mexico City to tomorrow night, too--but that's not an option I want to exercise.

Be it known that Team Mastermind has missed all the drafts since the start of drafting, which is 5 drafts (+1 because multiple drafts were run at once). They are therefore getting a warning PM.

Should they miss tomorrow night's scheduled draft, they will be out of the league.

Speaking of tomorrow night's scheduled draft... See above post. Still looking for someone to cover drafts the next three nights. I will take IE lists and forward them if someone else decides to run it; otherwise, expect the draft to appear shortly before it happens.

11) LTown Throwdown (Jay O'Donnell, BrendanB, PVCpirate, Brandon Zalinsky, Brandon_L)
12) Team Mastermind (pimathbrainiac and cjl2625)
13) Team Guh... (allgoodthehood, LDiDomenico, Zach101, ice.berg, kfrisk)
14) Brolliance Beta (AGPapa, JoshPFalk, wmarshall11)
15) Daedalite InVAders (Maldridge422, Araris)
16) The Yellow Alliance (Littleboy)

For anybody wondering how this affects Pittsburgh Tier 1: I simply remove them from the draft, and there's some bonus time in between rounds 1 and 2.

EricH

Due to the removal of Team Mastermind, we have a number of teams that are suddenly free agents. See list below.

And normally, I'd do a full waiver process, but there isn't a picked team in the bunch. Sometimes players get lucky. So I'm thinking, let's go with a "Light" waiver process.

Lake Superior Regional 3122 3751 4986
Northern Lights Regional 3926 877 2532
Georgia Southern Classic Tier 2 1912 3091 1369
Palmetto Regional 4902 5020 4748
Dallas Regional Tier 1 4499 3037 4076
South Florida Regional 5196 2658 5329
Inland Empire Tier 2 1836 3128 4574

So... Here's how this is going to play out. Y'all have until the end of drafts on 12/5 to say you want X teams in Y order, either publicly or via PM to me. Uncontested claims get awarded first, then I go through and apply the waiver priority list to any remaining claims. Highest priority wins and goes to the bottom of the list.

Speaking of the list... It's all the new teams in order of joining, followed by the veterans in reverse order of finish in the regular season.
Frog Farce
Orange Juice
SHARP Cheddar
Team Guh…
Brolliance Beta
Daedalite InVAders
Team SuperPowerMatic
Ltown Throwdown
Koko's X-Cats
Falcon
The Yellow Alliance
Swamp Life
PureMichigan
The Breakfast Company
Rotten Peach Alliance
Frog Farce

Edit: Frog Farce has been awarded 1912 in Georgia Southern Classic Tier 2. The benefits of being first on the waiver list...and the drawbacks of the same.

And this is Falcon putting in a claim: 1912, Georgia Southern Classic Tier 2.

We'd also like to claim 1912 from Georgia Southern Classic Tier 2. They got lucky with a few of their other randoms too. Is this same process used when a team is added to a regional?

Yes... and no.

We'll start with the easy stuff--you're the highest on the waiver priority list, and 1912, GSC tier 2 is a heavily contested team, so I'll go ahead and award them to you guys. (Hey, that was easy!) Which, seeing as it's actually a contested claim, will send you to the bottom of the priority list. When you figure out which team you want to drop, go ahead and update the GSC 2 list.

Now, as to the add process... It's similar. What I'm looking to do when a team adds to a regional is that whoever finds them and grabs them gets them, pending anybody above them on the waiver list claiming the same team within a time span of 5 days. If someone else does make a claim, the two players involved can either pass the "waivered" team on (with the original deadline intact) OR make a valid trade (team(s)-for-team(s), doesn't have to be in the same tier). If more than two players are involved before the deadline, then all parties may be involved in a trade, or opt not to be involved, their choice. Whoever ends up with the "waivered" team goes to the bottom of the list; anybody else involved ends up dropping down to right above them in some random order.

Ok GSC is updated. Uncontested waivers don't change the priority list?

Ok GSC is updated. Uncontested waivers don't change the priority list?

Maybe I should rephrase that: Uncontested waivers won't change the priority list immediately. (Thinking through implications...)

If a claim is not contested, then the player making it will be moved to the bottom AFTER any awards of contested teams have been made and associated priority changes--or after the team has been officially awarded, which is about the same thing. (The case of the player at the very top of the list making a claim is pretty much an automatic award/move to bottom.)

I figure a schedule reminder for the next week and a half might be in order. We do have a bunch of holes in the lineup--if you want to try your hand at the organized chaos of running a draft, I'd greatly appreciate it if you signed up for one of the open spots.

Consider them all in. You can submit for as many teams as you're interested in.

And now, a very quick note: Central Valley will be a little later than most drafts to be put up. I'm can take lists for it effective immediately, though. BUT... I'm still looking for someone to run Mexico City. I'll forward lists for that if someone opts to step up.

Your attention, please. Due to NOBODY volunteering to run Mexico City tonight, the draft has been moved to 12/9, with Montreal. I'll be running it via early opening, same way I did with Pittsburgh.

We only have one more open spot to move a draft into. I really don't want to have to use any other tricks to stay on schedule.

Also note: The Los Angeles draft will start somewhat later than might be anticipated. Real robotics > fantasy robotics. For a little while.

Your attention please. Team Guh... has missed the last 5 drafts in a row, and will be getting a warning PM tonight.

Also, with the end of the Los Angeles Regional draft, the boot waiver is now closed for taking claims. And... at this time, no contested claims, so...
--SHARP Cheddar, 877 in Northern Lights, please drop your drop team.
--Daedalite InVAders have 3 awards: 4499 (Dallas), 3926 (Northern Lights), and 3128 (Inland Empire). Please drop all your drop teams.

All teams not noted as a waiver award are now free agents.

Be advised, there are some waiver claims up in threads as of today. On 12/10, the challenge period for those is over. They are 2059 (Palmetto, Daedalite InVAders) and 1648 (Georgia Southern Classic, Rotten Peach Alliance).

I'll have Kansas City up sometime between 11 AM EST and draft start time... Taking lists now, though. orangemoore has GTR East.

By the way, I'd appreciate someone stepping up to run Alamo on Monday, as well as North Carolina on Friday. If we get those, we'll only have 2 holes to fill the rest of the season, not counting the multi-day block drafts--but they're both on 12/16. (I think. Rumors have not been confirmed, but I might be available to fill the third hole we have, San Diego on 12/23.)

Just a couple of notes:
I've released an update to the drafting program (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/3042) (again!). Just some minor bug fixes in hidden places, and a slight piece of new functionality that does, in fact, work. (It'll now sort the team list before scrambling it.)

And here's the schedule for the next week or so:
8-Dec Alamo Bryce Paputa
8-Dec Australia EricH
9-Dec Montreal PVCPirate
9-Dec Mexico City EricH
10-Dec Bayou BrennanB
10-Dec Waterloo EricH
11-Dec St. Louis Brandon_L
11-Dec Tech Valley EricH
12-Dec Central Illinois EricH
12-Dec North Carolina orangemoore
13-Dec Sacramento EricH
13-Dec Virginia PVCPirate
14-Dec Phoenix East EricH
14-Dec Wisconsin PVCPirate
15-Dec Hub City BrennanB
15-Dec Oklahoma EricH
16-Dec Buckeye BrennanB
16-Dec Hawaii

You'll notice that Buckeye and Hawaii are both open spots--I can't cover either one to my knowledge. I'll be releasing Mexico City near the start of tomorrow's drafts, and would appreciate some quick picking there as I'll be in a minor time crunch on Tuesday when it's supposed to be run. (Thankfully... I already have about half of the lists for that one.)

Buckeye it is. Now all we need is someone to cover Hawaii. (And North Carolina.)

We didn't scare you away? :p Don't worry, it should be a little easier this time around.

FYI: All draft runners.

Apparently Excel released an update recently, my computer picked it up last night, and this update managed to disable ALL of the buttons in the draft running spreadsheet. (They were all ActiveX controls, FWIW.) At least for me that's what happened, the ones that were still there.

A temporary "patch" release--V3.1.8--will be cropping up shortly; I think I've managed to port all the macros over to rebuilt buttons properly, and tested what I could (though it'll currently only work on the first two tiers). (Now they're all "Form" controls.) When I catch some time (say, in a couple of weeks), I'll be going through and doing some cleanup/re-writing some things to deal with stuff that's a minor nuisance right now, so hopefully I can fix it up nicely again.

Be advised, there are some waiver claims up in threads as of today. On 12/10, the challenge period for those is over. They are 2059 (Palmetto, Daedalite InVAders) and 1648 (Georgia Southern Classic, Rotten Peach Alliance).
No challenges to these, so both are awarded. RPA joins Daedalite at the bottom of the list.

Just a friendly reminder that we've got another round of waivers ending after drafts tomorrow night--I'll probably need a little time to sort through all the claims, so awards might get pushed back a day or so.

OK, let's see here... Waivers ended, but I did allow one late claim (somebody--not in the league--announced a "new" team late, when they were already on waivers, and I hadn't started yet).

Broke out the uncontested claims, dropped those claimants. Ran through the contested teams--surprisingly, there was no need for a second round. And... We have some winners.

Orange Juice: 125, South Florida (5557 requested as the drop team)
LTown Throwdown: 1592, South Florida (3502 out)
SHARP Cheddar: 3476, Inland Empire (1197 out)
Frog Farce: 3824, Palmetto; 2531, Northern Lights; 5038, Israel; 3128, Inland Empire; 4090, Rock City (sorry, folks, forgot to note your drop teams--you'll have to take care of the updates)
Falcon: 1939, Rock City (4745); 1547, GTR-Central (4777); 2815, Palmetto (4074); 932, Dallas (1296)

Just so everybody's aware, here's the schedule for the upcoming week. We do still need someone to handle Hawaii, or we'll have to bump it to the 18th and find someone to run it then. I'm assuming I'm tied up on the 16th. All the other drafts are covered (with the exception of a couple of block drafts, see end of this post).

Also on the radar: The district block drafts (between Christmas and Kickoff). The way those will work: The entire district will be up for grabs, in as many rounds as it takes (but no more than 6). I'll be trying to split 'em between two days if it'll take more than 3-4 rounds. You'll only need one list, if it's long enough; the plan currently is to run 3 rounds, stop and re-scramble everybody and the remaining teams, and run 3 more rounds the next night. (This is so all you live-drafters, and the draft runners, can sleep at some point.) I could probably use some help running a couple of those--specifically MAR and PNW--but we'll see how it goes the first night.

As long as you have lists from everyone and/or everyone is fine live drafting at that time, I don't see an issue.

I dropped all the lists I had to Brennan (Brolliance and PureMI); knowing most folks here, there should be a pretty good pile of lists in. I'm fine with a 9 PM start, but I am on the West Coast, so for me it'll only be 6 PM.

Scheduling item:

At this time, we have two drafts that didn't run on schedule--I'm guessing traffic is bad in Florida too. The problem is that we don't have any open slots, officially--Hawaii (tomorrow night, Bryce Paputa running at last word) took the last one when it moved from last Tuesday.

UNofficially, however, I anticipate the last week of drafts having some "open time" due to many of the lists for the districts only needing to be sent once.

So, here's the proposal:
Hub City (12/15, draft runner stuck in traffic) moves to a date TBD. 3/night might be a bit much, but it wouldn't be the first time. Or bump it to between Christmas and Kickoff.
Peachtree (12/17) is UP, but "inactive" as of this post. I propose that we treat that one as though it was opened early--pick if the slots ahead of you have picked, if James has a list he can put in the right teams--with a "run date" of 12/18. (As I was writing this, Ed did just that...)

Sorry about that I wish it was traffic, i can run a draft from my phone then, it was work not realizing you back up 6 months of work on a project on an external drive so that if your system goes down the night before the project is presented you still have everything available but yes I am running it as if tomorrow was the effective draft date

Couple of quick announcements, and then I'll be putting up Ventura.

1) Tonight set a record for the MOST FF event drafts in one night, at 4 drafts. Drafts are still going, too, but we seem to be back on schedule. (James, if I catch you running a draft from your phone while driving, I'll have to see if I can swipe a -infinity from Billfred for ya.)

2) We've got some waiver claims. I strongly suspect that there are more teams out there, but the policy is you see 'em, you claim 'em. If nobody wants a team, we'll let them go.

Also to be noted with the waivers is that one of the teams is claimed to fill a hole. Filling a hole in the draft (either a team dropped out, or somehow was picked twice) is an automatic bump to the top of the waiver list if you make a claim to fill that hole, automatic award of the claim, and automatic drop to the bottom of the waiver list. (Or you can just claim a pool team, but sometimes those waiver teams are too good to pass up.)

The claims, in no particular order:
303 (Tech Valley)
5076 (Greater Toronto East)
2996 (Utah)
604, 1323 (Central Valley)
3250 (Sacramento)
3314 (Alamo)
5416 (Bayou)
1622, 4026 (South Florida)

The hole to be filled: The Daedalite InVAders inadvertently got 3959 twice in Bayou, and have claimed (and been awarded) 5778 to fill the hole in their third pick.

The list:
Brolliance Beta
Team SuperPowerMatic
Koko's X-Cats
The Yellow Alliance
Swamp Life
PureMichigan
The Breakfast Company
Rotten Peach Alliance
Orange Juice
Ltown Throwdown
SHARP Cheddar
Frog Farce
Falcon
Daedalite InVAders

Oh, right, the deadline. I know it's normally 5 days, but... I'm in a giving mood. Christmas Eve at end of drafts is the deadline(6 days), sneak one in before I manage to get around to cycling and it goes in the hopper too.

If something like this happens again, can we make it so that draft runners have to post this in their draft threads? I didn't find this post til after the draft happened, and missed the draft. (I was hoping to live draft). That way it makes it more convenient and we don't have to dig through posts of randomizings.

I don't see it in the draft thread. If you did post it, I must've missed it. I just think that if we encounter a situation like that again, the draft runner should have a separate post in the thread saying that the draft will resume again tomorrow.

On further review--I didn't notice that 5778 was already taken. Claim DENIED, InVAders will need to make another claim (or transfer an existing claim to that position). InVAders revert to slot #9 on the priority list--for now.

Could use some lists--I've got Frog Farce and PureMI.

Speaking of lists/attendance, can I get an absentee report from the draft runners for the last 2-3 days, say back to the 18th, on who missed? Got one or two players that I think are cutting it a little close, just want to get some confirmation or denial.

Due to the game hint Live stream tomorrow I would really like to run as much of Silicon Valley Regional draft tonight as possible. Please send in your pick lists and make your picks when it is your turn.
*You still have until your time-slot tomorrow to make your pick but it would be nice to make them tonight*:)

Enjoy the break, folks. There will be no drafts until 12/26.

That said, here's the remaining schedule, along with some announcements:
26-Dec Chesapeake EricH
26-Dec Midwest orangemoore
27-Dec Queen City EricH
27-Dec Smoky Mountain BrennanB
28-Dec Alberta orangemoore
28-Dec MI District Block: Day 1 EricH
29-Dec MI District Block: Day 2 EricH
29-Dec MAR District Block: Day 1
30-Dec MAR District Block: Day 2
30-Dec PNW District Block: Day 1
1-Jan PNW District Block: Day 2
1-Jan New England District Block: Day 1 EricH
2-Jan New England District Block: Day 2 EricH
2-Jan Indiana District Block orangemoore

I'll be making an announcement on how exactly the block drafts are expected to work shortly; I'm still churning over a few ideas. The most likely scenario is that one list covers both days unless revised, but the draft order will change up a bit between days in some undeclared fashion.

Draft runners: There's a new version of the running spreadsheet out, V3.1.9, fixing a couple of button issues. Also, I anticipate another version coming out in a few days with what should be added functionality. (Or added headache.)

And finally... Swamp Life needs to show some life on the 26th, after missing the last 5 drafts, or get the boot.

Waivers: Eh, I'll get to the claims when I get to the claims. Probably sometime tomorrow or the next day. We'll call 'em open until I announce the start of running.

A note on the district block drafts:
Yes, they will start tomorrow, with Michigan. I can't guarantee a posting time, but I'll try for tonight.

So, here's how this will work:
We'll run through one day's drafts. And then we'll pause, make sure all the picks are recorded, and re-randomize all the remaining teams (and players) for the next day. Got a list in for the first day? It'll transfer over to the second day. Which means that the second day should run very quickly. I don't plan to make a second thread for the second day.

As far as running PNW and MAR: I think I'll be able to do it, concurrently with the second rounds of any unfinished drafts.

This is EricH posting from ChrisH's account.

Due to some Internet issues, I will be unable to run drafts until further notice--this includes all the 2-day block drafts unless something changes.

I need someone to step up and run those drafts, especially Michigan. I have lists, but may or may not be able to get them over to whoever steps up in time--Brolliance, Frog Farce, TYA, you might want to resend to whoever volunteers.

Plan B if nobody steps up: We're drafting after Kickoff.

What?

Bryce Paputa

What?

Instead of doing a draft for each district event, we're doing one draft for all of each district. Everyone gets 6 teams, 3 tonight and 3 tomorrow, and you get whatever any of your teams score at any district event they go to. To eliminate any advantage from teams going to 3 district events (or even 4) I think that the scores will be averaged from each competition. This won't affect MSC, that draft will be later.

Why are you guys doing that?
Why weren't you doing all the districts individually?

I don't think its the best solution, but I think its better then doing all the drafts individually again. It was too much.

It's way better to do all of a district in one large draft rather than many smaller ones. I would not enjoy having to do 8+ more drafts at the district event level.

EricH
28-12-2014, 21:34
OK, I'm back online, I think. (crosses fingers).

Which means that I'll be putting up MAR as soon as I can get a team list put together.

For Ed: The options we really had were to run every single district (all 48 or so of them) or group them in some way. Now, 48 drafts is about 24 days of drafting, at 2/day, which puts us either with a November 1st start or with a finish around Week 3 of build. So, I'm utilizing a block system to try to give everybody a fair(ish) shot at putting together a powerful alliance. The attempt is to give everybody as many teams as reasonable (in MI's case, we could probably be doing 10 rounds if we wanted to) in each district. Scores will be averaged (mean score) across all district events played in. Unless... Any of the scorers want to try to normalize to two district events?

I intend to implement one trade rule for the block drafts: Can't trade a team with >1 play in or out. Gotta have only one play, or zero. (Translation: draft a clunker, you got one shot to drop 'em. Notice everybody missed a dark horse, got one shot to grab 'em.)

One final call for a draft runner in the regular season:

The Pacific Northwest is supposed to start tomorrow, running across New Year's Eve (off night, folks) and onto New Year's. That being said, I've had some family stuff come up that's going to throw my running of New England into question for starting on time, or at all, on 1/1/15 if I run it.

So...

Here's what I'm thinkin'. I've got two lists (Frog Farce and PureMI if they've updated their stuff) for both drafts. I will forward list or link no later than 15 minutes before draft start if someone is running either of those.

Plan A is that someone steps up for one or the other. Plan B is that I take PNW with a late start tomorrow, say about half an hour, and/or New England (with a draft opening on 12/31 if I do run it, rather than 1/1).

I have been working on some updates to the draft runner, and will be testing them out tomorrow--expect an updated version to be released if they work.

Given that development...

I'll go ahead and open New England on 12/31, for drafting 1/1 and 1/2. Family schedule is still being worked out.

Thinking ahead: I'll try to work out the schedule for District Championship drafts before Kickoff, with a "subject to change" notice attached. They'll be between the last week of the district events and the district championship.

Thinking farther ahead: Championship draft will be by division again, but exact schedule--other than "between District Championships and Championship"--is TBD.

You can swap teams out/in up until their second play.

EricH
30-12-2014, 18:51
You can swap teams out/in up until their second play.

Correct. This allows for some of the flexibility of the older district drafts--draft the same team 3 times, they clunk their first time you can drop them for someone else--while still maintaining a more fair playfield, as you don't know what the team's score will be for their next event.

So, I have 217. If they lay an egg at their first event, I can trade them for any team that hasn't played yet, or has played once. But if I trade them after their second event, or if the team I trade for has played twice, it's an invalid trade.

IKE

-IKE

The way we'll work it is this: Whatever teams you have at the END of the season are the ones that will give you points. So, to go with the above example: If I trade 217 for 201 (yeah, I know I have both of them, just making a point), I'll get the points for 201 but not 217. Unless I add 217 back in for another team before they've played a second time...

That being said, you'll hopefully know the pointage for the teams each week.

IKE
30-12-2014, 19:53
So, if 217 lays and egg week 1, and 201 gets CA or is the magic 3rd winner, and you switch, do you get those winner points from 201 week 1?

-IKE
Correct.

BUT... remember that the points are averaged (or normalized, if the scorers want to do it that way), so if 201 lays an egg in Week X and 217 does the whole "dominate at more than one event" thing after Week 1, then you might actually be worse off. Your choice, of course.

They didn't. Not fully, at any rate. I was a little late on some updates--that would be because I was trying the old "fix it on the fly" routine. *goes back into programming cave*

On the other hand, I now have a VERY good idea why some of the runners have seen crashes when trying to do some actions, having just about crashed myself. And it's a really sneaky little bug, one that wouldn't be obvious at all.

It's up now.

Due to a family commitment (and a couple of other items), there's a fair chance of the draft being suspended, late starting, or other similar items happening. I'm going to ask for a lot of lists for tomorrow (Friday should be normal), and a lot of early picks. I'd LOVE to get through the draft before it's supposed to start (unrealistic as that may be...).

Should I need to suspend/late start the draft, I will naturally make an announcement to that effect in the thread, and I'll try to give my best estimate of a restart time. Worst-case scenario, Friday's scheduled rounds start late to allow the previous rounds to finish.

Looks like we're done drafting the regular season, and in time for Kickoff! I'd like to thank all the folks that stepped up to run drafts this year, as well as all the players that showed up to play.

A couple of minor notes:
--I still have some waivers to get to. Probably during some "down" time this weekend.
--I still need to figure out the draft schedule for the DCMP events.
--And the CMP, given 8 divisions at 75 teams/division.
--And there IS a warning in somebody's future (actually, it's sent). But... at this point, the only drafts that will be affected will be the DCMP events. No point in announcing who at this point.

Edit:
--I will also be working on upgrading the drafting program. I have a list of bugs, and a list of upgrades. I may also be monkeying with some other stuff. (Famous last words: I know what I'm doing, it's just a minor change...)

EricH
02-01-2015, 22:43
OK, folks, we have an approximate schedule for drafting your District Championships. These are +- a day or so in any given direction right now, depending on how fast they fill up.

30-Mar IN DCMP
1-Apr PNW DCMP
5-Apr NE DCMP
6-Apr MI DCMP
6-Apr MAR DCMP

Indiana and the Pacific Northwest will be playing a week earlier than the others; New England ends a week earlier than MI and MAR and thus hopefully has enough time to fill faster.

Well, that was a doozy.

Now that W-L-T is out of the rankings (for this year), we need to re-evaluate how we do the W-L-T part of points.

We could go to TBA for the W-L-T.
We could just use the QA--we did something similar in 2010.

Or we could do something different.

Looking for some input from scorers and players here. I'll make the final decision shortly.

PVCpirate

I think we should just use whatever score they use to rank the teams in the standings, it would probably take too long to go through and compare scores for every match. Maybe divide it by some number that keeps the value similar to previous years so it doesn't dominate the scoring.

EricH

JosephC

I think QA divided by X number would be a good system.

It's hard to figure out what X should be before we start seeing posted scores though, anything we decide now is just guess work.

Pros : Easy to score, doesn't change much, keeps the QA from dominating the scoring.

Cons : Teams that have most of their events towards the end of the season will naturally be skewed with more QA, later events = more score.

For districts, typically #1 has a 11-1 record and thus earn about 22 pts. If you did (# of teams - rank)/2=score, this would be a decent approximation.

says the points gained from qualification round performance will be based on rank. Maybe we can just use
(1-(rank/total teams))*(2*#matches) and round to an integer? This would make the top ranked team essentially 12-0, and the bottom ranked team is 0-12.

EDIT: I guess this is similar to IKE's idea

NOTICE!
All Waiver Claims are currently Locked! (Finally!)

I will be processing the waivers to the best of my ability. However...

A redraft has been requested, and approved, for Midwest, due to a submitted list not being used. The redraft will be run using the existing teams at the time of the draft, with the exception of any teams that happened to drop out. That being stated, I will run waivers with Midwest claims, and without Midwest claims, to see what effect said claims have, and will announce any non-affected claims immediately.

I do not know when Midwest will re-draft; I have suggested using a weekend and giving plenty of notice. I have also requested that a list of added teams be made available; I will re-evaluate Midwest waivers, and any waivers affected by the hold, after the redraft.

FIRST has posted the District point format for this season here http://goo.gl/YbUFQV. Looks like the points for qualifying are awarded based on rank and event size as a number between about 3 and 22. I think it would be reasonable to just use this or a simplified version for FF. Only issue might be that we already give points for ranking, so it would be double points.

EricH
19-02-2015, 20:34
Let's see here. I've got a couple items of business.

First, waivers, specifically Midwest.
--We've got several waivers out, one challenged. I figure Saturday timeframe for those, giving three days total. [Edit: Or so. Lone Star has one awarded due to list position, one challenged.]
--Midwest has taken way too long, that's on me. The team in question: 16. When I announced the hold, I forgot to say which order would be used to award the claim, so for this instance I will be using the original order. (No awards affected--I checked before running that batch of waivers.) Rotten Peach Alliance takes 16 (and goes to the bottom of the list). (In future, I'll try to remember to announce "previous" or "next" order if a similar situation happens.)

Second, SCORING. I know this is kind of hanging on us, and we need to finish getting all squared away. So...

--First question for y'all, are you thinking you'll be OK with the FIRST district point system, or do we want to try something else? I've seen cumulative score, some equations giving +- the "right" amount of points for the guesstimated wins, and there's FIRST's system which is basically ranking, which we already give points for. I will say that if we go with FIRST's system for this year, we would probably not give ranking points for top 15 like normal.
--Second item, we're probably going to need some bodies on this. I think Brandon_L had something with an automatic scoring going, but I'm not entirely sure on where it's at (and I'm willing to bet it needs tweaking). Even then, we'll need some help to score players' alliances. I'll re-post the link to the alliance document once I'm sure it's up to date.

Draft Lock: Week 1 events lock at midnight on 2/25 (Wednesday night, in other words).

For anybody interested:

The current alliance sheet is up at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L82EHqb_K-APfLNFMptayvpqhp6kerIbiWwurkQrEwM/edit#gid=0. I update this whenever a change is confirmed; it should be up to date (pending waiver runs from the next round, of course).

This is just the alliances, in drafted order by event.

Hey, would it work to create a Google sheet of hyperlinks to link to each event? Just something I was thinking about......

Hey, would it work to create a Google sheet of hyperlinks to link to each event? Just something I was thinking about......

Curious what you're thinking--as in to the event page, or to the event's draft thread, or to each team in the event... So many possibilities, so little time.

I'm pretty sure it's possible to embed a link into a Google sheet.

Yes it is. Could possibly link to both. But if it is autoscored not sure why we need it linked to the events page.

Which is kind of why I was wondering what the question was about...

The idea was a separate sheet tab to link to the specific regional on the sheet you created, Eric; that way, we don't have to search around the entire sheet to find the regional that we want to review our roster for.

Ah. That might be a *bit* harder. I might be able to break it up by competition weeks later today when I get home from being out-and-about, should make it a smidgen easier.

If anybody's wondering about waivers--last call, but right now only Lone Star has a challenge. (624 has two challenges on them, for three claims overall.)

Rotten Peach, please wait for waiver claims to be CONFIRMED before editing the spreadsheet. Someone edited all your claims into the spreadsheet last night (except for the challenged one). If that wasn't you guys, I apologize.

Breakfast Company gets 624 in Lone Star, giving up 5503. I've already updated the spreadsheet, someone want to update the thread?

Current waiver priority list:

Team SuperPowerMatic
Koko's X-Cats
Swamp Life
PureMichigan
Orange Juice
Ltown Throwdown
SHARP Cheddar
Frog Farce
Falcon
The Yellow Alliance
Daedalite InVAders
Rotten Peach Alliance
Brolliance Beta
The Breakfast Company

And I will be editing the sheet to separate out each week of events, starting now. Sorted by week, then draft order. Should be all correct.

As a reminder, all Week 1 rosters will lock at midnight tonight (eh, let's call it midnight PST this time--doesn't make a whole lot of difference, we'll probably all be sleepin' anyways.)

All District Draft rosters will remain available for change after that point; however, all players are reminded that changing a team with > 1 event either onto or off of a District Draft roster is not allowed.

On further review--I didn't notice that 5778 was already taken. Claim DENIED, InVAders will need to make another claim (or transfer an existing claim to that position). InVAders revert to slot #9 on the priority list--for now.

Its been a while, but we're finally submitting a claim for 4587 to fill that hole.

So now that week one is over how does scoring get done?

Well right now I don't think complete match data is available for all the events, so right now we wait. Once that happens, some of us have to go through and score all the teams, although there might be some stuff to automate some of the process. Then the scores for each FF player get totaled up and the event score is added to the standings.

Also, I vote for either using the district points and not giving our usual ranking points or using our usual ranking points and not having anything in place of win/loss points.

Using our usual ranking points and not having anything else isn't gonna work past #15 or #16--everybody gets zero beyond that unless they're picked or pick up hardware. That would be... rather bad for a lot of folks in single-tier events.

Everybody OK with using FIRST's system for the year, with no separate FF ranking points? Unless I suddenly hear a lot of negativity on this, I think that's about the way to go. Awards points and elims finishes won't change, BTW.

It would certainly make things a lot easier. If everyone is OK with it, my bet is that I can ask Alex at HQ to spit out all district point equivalent data (not just districts) for teams at all events for us. He was doing some of this last year with the original District Ranking System which is now FIRST's main Database source. He's likely a little preoccupied right now though considering...

*Edit: Alex said these values will be available for non-district teams that compete in districts, but not exposed for non-district events :(

Yup. Just don't pick a team that's played more than once.

With the data back online, is any scoring happening?

I can do some scoring I just need to have an updated sheet/document laying out what everything(Awards/Ranking/Playoffs) is worth.

I can do some scoring I just need to have an updated sheet/document laying out what everything(Awards/Ranking/Playoffs) is worth.Relevant items (from the SLFF rules document, W-L-T and ranking removed, and from FIRST's published method):

Ranking is using the District Ranking system (which is a formula based on number of teams at event, ranking of team in question, and a normalization factor). I'm going to have a hard time reproducing it here, but I'll try--see spoiler.

Winner, 30 points
Finalist, 20 points
Semifinalist, 10 points
Quarterfinalist, 4 points

Woodie Flowers Finalist Award, 8 points
Regional Chairman’s Award, 42 points
Engineering Inspiration, 36 points
Rookie All-Star, 20 points
Rookie Inspiration, 15 points

Highest Rookie Seed, 5 points
High score, 5 points
Judges Award, 5 points
Robot-based award (Delphi, Xerox, GM, Rockwell, Motorola), 15 points
Dean’s List, 4 points
Any award not previously mentioned, 2 points

QP(R,N,a)=(Inverse Error((N-2R+2)/aN)(10/Inverse Error(1/a))+12), round up to the nearest point.

R is the Rank, N is the Number of teams at the event, a is 1.07 (normalization).
