I did this one in about 10 minutes. Although it's obviously slapdash and much lower quality than yours, I really liked your idea and decided to try it out. What software do you use? I use Blender. Maybe we could trade tips and such.

(If that one doesn't show up, go here : https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10629750_751787108237964_1150605358471426389_n.jpg ?oh=15924c215c7c27c5f4550bcd58daf6d9&oe=55045C1E&__gda__=1426079910_2d7ded43e54ed02b1931d9cf15ff7fd 2 )

I'm glad you got inspired (:
In order to create these renders we use Cinema4D Release 16.
I don't know how things are going in blender, but I would suggest you to add some polygons to your Christmas tree leafs (I guess you made these with an hair mesh?) and maybe working on their material a little bit more.
Also, some transparency and reflections to those lightning-glass-balls would make them look a lot of more eye-catching!.
For a nice last touch - I would advise to create a nice, warm ( probably an-orange-like-color) spot light, to give a little depth to everything.

I would love to hear from you for tips, or maybe even see some of your works!
