View Full Version : Viability of Belt Driven Mecanums
We are considering a mecanum drive train this year, but for the sake of weight and simplicity, we want to drive it with belts. We ran into a few issues with this, the most prominent being whether or not 9mm or 15mm could stand up to the torque from the drive when strafing without stretching or tearing. I looked them up on Andymark to see what information thay had there, but I couldn't find anything. Any help would be great on this.

We used 15 mm Gates belts on a mecanum drive with 6" Andymark wheels. We've had no issues with them after two regionals, numerous demonstrations, and two off-season events.

If you really want to help weight and simplicity, look into direct driving the mecanums with planetary gearboxes. If you want more info on it feel free to PM me or just ask here, we did that in 2014 and it was a very good way of doing it.

Yes we also used AndyMark planetaries direct drive on our 8 inch Mecanums.
