Hi everyone,

Has anyone using the 2015 KOP chassis had their gear boxes bind up occasionally? To me, it looks like the hex shaft might be too close to the largest gear. Either way, we did part swaps to find out what the cause was, (we had one good one and one bad one) and it seems to likely be the bearings in the gear boxhousing. Any history of this? Supplier defect?

We encountered that problem as well with one of our gearboxes.
Our mechanical team was working on improving it.

Did you install encoders? I noticed when our students assembled them that the encoder screws pushed some plastic into the bearing cavity. It resulted in the bearing not sitting flat. That caused a little binding.

Check to make sure your bearings are pressed all the way in and there is no debris underneath them.

We had the problem of one binding, and some students took it apart and put it back together again. All better now. My guess is there are several possible causes, and you need to figure out which it is. Make sure the case screws are not too tight, for example.

I don't have a 2015 trans to look at, but in past years gears had a small shoulder on one side, at the hub. If assembles upside down (inside out?) it would cause binding.

The shoulder looks like a ring-shaped bump surrounding the hole in the gear, on one side of the gear only. It is not very tall and easily overlooked.

we had this issue as well. this is what i found today. At first I thought the output shaft was contacting the input gear, so i put it in the lathe and spun a little off. NO change :eek:

I had just the input gear in the housing, and was spinning and noticed the gear was wobbling??? So i then put the short shaft that the lathe and spun it to see if it was true.... Straight as an arrow. I the put the input gear on it and wobble came back. Long and short of it is in our case the input gear is out of round. Had another from an extra tough box mini so checked it and put it all together and all is well :)
