I've been looking for S4 encoders on the US Digital page but it looks like they currently aren't selling them. I emailed US Digital and was told there was a "critical shortage" of these encoders. Does anyone know where I can buy them?
If you're looking for a sealed encoder, I highly recommend the Grayhill 63R, which is available through Digikey (http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?mpart=63R256&vendor=136).

We used the S4 as well and are faced with the shortage, so we will be moving to the S5. Bulky but cheaper and will do the same thing the S4 would do for us. Might want to look into that. We will not be selecting the indexer, so it will have the typical 4 pin layout.

I was looking at the S4 encoder just yesterday. I had to contact us digital to work with their salesperson. I finally got approval to purchase 10 from them.
After all that work, it turns out we may end up using a completely different encoder from a different source.
