Our team has decided to use an encoder this year, we are having difficulties because the ports are spaced out, whereas with the c-Rio there was no spacing, the only option we have seen thus far is to use a 4-pin header, which we have none of, have any other teams faced a similar problem and have any other solutions? All help is appreciated.

we have used the female-female single pin connectors
like these (http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/40pcs-20cm-Dupont-Female-to-Female-Breadboard-Jumper-Wire-Raspberry-Pi/1146042_1855098896.html)
however if you are going to use the talon xrs I guess you have
to use vex robotics talon data cables (http://www.vexrobotics.com/217-4358.html) "ribbon" unless the breakout boards get re-stocked and/or you can design your own

Could you post a picture at your convenience? It sounds to me like you are trying to place the connector in the wrong orientation on the roboRIO. You may also have a 4 pin encoder and are wondering how to connect it to a 3 pin channel on the roboRIO? Not totally sure. A follow up with more information would be appreciated and would make it easier for others to better assist you.

We're ordering 4-pin connectors, we think this should resolve the problem.
Thank you for all the help.

How will a 4 pin connector help? The DIO ports on the roboRIO are still only 3 pins each.

I think they mean to use the 4-pin connectors because they will stretch across the gap between adjacent sets of roboRIO .1 header pins. The two middle pin positions don't get used, just the two end ones.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, But you can wire the encoder through standard D I/O's on the RoboRio, but you will need to use 2 rows per encoder. 5v, gnd, and signal on the first row, and Signal 2 on the second D I/O port:)
