Hello,
I am currently having trouble installing java on the roboRio. Everything runs smoothly to the point the where the installer needs to deploy the JRE to the roboRio. Afterwards, the process seems to take incredibly long (never finished) to deploy while saying "Tarring created JRE." I even let it run for about for a hour and a half once.
I have already updated the roboRio's firmware and re-imaged it many, many times to get it to work, but the end result is always the same.
Is there anything I am doing wrong to fix this?
Thanks

Please first make sure you are following the steps exactly:
http://wpilib.screenstepslive.com/s/4485/m/13503/l/288822-installing-java-8-on-the-roborio-using-the-frc-roborio-java-installer-java-only
I know this may not be a particularly helpful answer but I am covering my bases. It may end up in you having to install the jre yourself over ssh using the parameters the WPI team used. I believe Kevin O'Connor or another one of the software developers posted them at one point. I will see if I can track them down if worse comes to worse.
Though they do have a few tips on the ScreenSteps Live page.
Oh and what fsilberberg said. That is a useful thing as well. :)

Please post the log file from the installer, which is in the log directory in the tools folder.

Sorry, I can't find any log file. There isn't a log folder within the tools directory. Maybe there could be something to be derived from that?

I tried everything again, following the instructions to the letter. Now I just get a blank white window. Still no log file though.

How are you running the installer? There's no way that a log is not being generated somewhere, it would crash on startup if it couldn't make a log file.

I am running the installer from the "user_directory"\wpilib\tools\ with Java(TM) Platform SE Binary. (my default is to open them in WinRAR, so I need to select the option instead.)

Okay, I just figured everything out. I performed the install with another computer, and it worked perfectly. (There must be something wrong with the other one)
Thank you so much for your help!

We had the same problem. The documents say JRE 8u11 for the computer. If you have java updates then you could be on a higher version.
To fix we downloaded 8u11, uninstalled current Java JRE from the computer, disconnect from the Internet, installed Java JRE 8u11 on the computer, opened Java Control Panel and unchecked auto update - then never check button, reconnected to the Internet.
We were then able to install the JRE on the RoboRIO.
