View Full Version : 2015 Georgia Southern Classic Regional
Anybody out there excited for this brand new regional?!
The regional is going to be in Perry, Ga, which is where we held GRITS (off-season Georgia event) for the first couple of years.
It should be a good regional, there are a fair number of the staple Georgia teams, as well as a good number of teams we haven't seen too often at Peachtree in the past. It's also been set up to run Friday - Sunday instead of the usual Thursday - Saturday regional.
So who all is going? I'd love to hear from teams and vounteers! :)
Also, as a recent transplant from Atlanta into Orlando, are there any Orlando people headed to the Perry regional that wouldn't mind a travel partner?

I'll be headed back to GA for GSCR. This'll be the first time I'm not actually there competing with a team, so a regional of FIRSTs (lol).

I'm a recent transplant in north Tampa (~ 1 hour from Orlando) and am planning on heading up Thursday evening. I'll send you an PM.

I'm not a fan of this Friday-Sunday schedule. We're going to be driving (only) 140 miles on the way back, but I'm already planning to take time off from work and going to ask professors for course material ahead of time for that Friday and Monday.
With the Thursday-Saturday schedule, you could at least rest up on Sunday and be ready for work/school on monday...

FWIW we took Georgia Southern Classic of of our very small board for travel options with the Friday-Sunday. Did that at ye olde New Jersey Regional in 2010 and I remember taking a while to recover from that rather than the standard 24 hour turnaround for Regionals and the 36 hour turnaround for Champs.
Good luck though, y'all

work hard, play hard ;)
I'll be back at work on Monday morning after this regional. Can't say the same for my parents (head ref and scorekeeper) they might require a day of recovery.
But I think the idea is that it means the students take fewer days off from school. Most students won't be driving and if it comes down to it, can get a bit of sleep on the drive home.

I hope everyone is excited for GSCR. Along with the debut of Recycle Rush, GA FIRST is going to be debuting its new entertainment format, Gametime. Akin to what you've seen in Orlando and at Chesy Champs, Gametime will provide the audience with a chance to learn more about the teams, the region, and GA FIRST.
Our commentators, Jerry and Annika, will be joining our emcees and game announcers to bring everyone match analysis, discussion of FIRST related topics, interviewing key figures in FIRST, and interviewing teams about some of the cool things they are up to.
While the event is gearing up to be a great show, we need your help!
If your team has something interesting to talk about, let us know by filling out this form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1o9xQ4bS8ms8u1xqypZFRGw7XCl1N1elgIEgTVGcZeKI/viewform). The Gametime crew will review your request and contact you if we choose your team for an interview.
See you all at GSCR,

There’s no shortage of heroes who are going to brave the weak one storms, and you’ll find your share in GA at the Georgia Southern Classic Regional.
1311, 1648, and 1683 are just some of the notable attendees that are representing the Peach State. All three teams have been dominant forces in GA, whether on or off the field. One way or another, I think we’ll be seeing all three teams playing on Sunday evening.
It wouldn’t be a GA regional, if we didn’t have our out-of-state friends. From the south, 233 and 1902 are bringing their south beach talents, and hopefully weather, up to Perry. These teams hardly need any introductions, and if they get going early, teams in GA may just learn what it means to play with true powerhouses.
However, GA is where powerhouses are put to the test, and our friends from the Carolinas always help make sure of that. 1319 and 3506 are both looking to take home their own peace of the peach pie.
But the playing field in GA isn’t hard because of the incumbent winners. In fact, it’s always the teams you won’t expect who always come back to beat you qualifications, slip their way into the playoffs, and ultimately hoist the trophy at the end of the event.
Team 1002 certainly fits that bill. Having shown less than stellar performances for the past few years, 1002 has struggled to regain its former glory. However, considering that 1002 finished their robot a couple of weeks before bag day, expect to sprint out of the gate.
Team 1746 hasn’t been to two regionals since its glory days in 2009. Otto was da original MVP by hosting a field for all the local teams to come out and play; but that was four years ago. Otto may not stack up against its former self, but a second regional and clean design may mean that this GA celebrity is starting to get back into the game.

We are still working with our contacts to work out exactly how integrated Gametime will be into the fabric of the event, but if it all goes well, you should see Gametime on the big screen (or the main regional stream).

Hey, can we bring a 1000 ft ethernet cable that can reach to the cyber center from our pit? Having practice day on a Friday means other regionals have started already. Might as well watch some streams in the comfort of our pits ;)

Sorry to hear about y'alls inconvenience and its a bummer y'all will have to bring a small crew. We are lucky enough to have no weather problems despite it just being very cold (which is strange for southern Louisiana lol). So we are able to bring a pretty large group (about 27 students I think) and if y'all need an extra hand just let us know! We'd be glad to help!:D
Yes! A note to all teams coming to the regional, please do not hesitate to let us know if you need any help! We'd be more than happy to set you up with some friendly teams who can lend a hand :)

Wow, what an amazing regional and amazing way to start the competition season! Team 1648 had one heck of a ride throughout the regional. We had a rough practice and first day of competition, but we got things together, and our hard work paid off.
First a couple of thank you's:
Thank you to 1319, who had faith in us even after looking extremely shaky in our first day of matches. Thanks for having us as your top pick, it was an honor to play alongside a team of your fame. Our alliance really worked well together, and I'm excited to play with y'all again at Peachtree.
Also, thank you to 3266 for being the perfect complementary robot for us and 1319. I still don't understand how y'all flew under everyone else's radar, but I guess that speaks about 1319 and our scouts' abilities. Y'all played super clutch in the playoffs, and your performance guaranteed the banner for our alliance.
Thank you to the reffing crew and event staff for making this regional run as smooth as possible and with minimal issues. We've had a wonderful time and a lot of it is because of the regional staff's excellent running of the event.
Finally, some congrats to:
1746 for winning the Engineering Inspiration award and finding their way to championships. I'm super excited that y'all will be at championships alongside us. Hopefully we'll get pits next to eachother again.
We'll see y'all at Peachtree, and at St Louis!

Just getting moving after a long weekend and a late night on the road. The weather was sketchy early, but we were able to complete the trip safely and had a great experience.
Kudos to GA FIRST and the crew at the event. There was no way to tell it was an inaugural event from the way it was run. Outstanding job everyone! We will definitely be back next year.
Many thanks to our alliance partners 832 Oscar and 1369 Minotaur. It was great working with you. We were able to make it all the way to the finals from the 8th seed. Great job! Good luck the rest of the year.
Congrats to 1319 1648 and 3266. You were a powerful alliance and we simply didn't have an answer for you. You worked together seamlessly. Good luck the rest of the year and in St Louis.

I'm really pleased with how the GSCR turned out for an inaugural event. The atmosphere of the event was awesome throughout the entire weekend. I think the facilities worked really well for a 45 team event and it was awesome, as usual, to have a full practice field (only improvement would be that it came with RCs).
I didn't get to spend too much time watching matches, but the announcer crew did a great job of maintaining a high level of excitement. I also really enjoyed the Gametime addition to the event. This was a neat way to have teams showcase projects as well as provide match commentary and impact on rankings and strategy.
A few thank yous from OTTO Team 1746:
To 1648: You guys are the best. I'm glad you ended up getting your game dialed in and that you got recognized for it. 1319 made a great pick and you guys blew away the rest of us in playoffs. I hope we get some more matches together at Peachtree.
To 3506 and 2556: We were honored to have you join us for playoffs. Your teams were both awesome to work with. I enjoyed the attitude you both brought with you to our alliance. You both filled your roles perfectly. I wish you both luck with the rest of your seasons.
1746 is beyond happy with how our season has started. This the first time in 5 years for the team to go to multiple regionals. We were really just happy to get past QFs for the first time since I joined the team in 2013. Winning Engineering Inspiration has yet to really sink in. We can't wait for Peachtree and eventually Champs. Several tweaks to make to the bot to keep us busy between now and then.
And has anyone seen my voice? I seem to have lost it somewhere.

Does anyone happen to have a video or pics of 233's 'bot?
I've been home for almost 24 hours, and am already preparing myself for the next event I'll be at.
I want to say thank you to all the students and mentors that came out to our event, you guys really make it special. A thank you to all the volunteers for being absolutely incredible (as always!!), we are "Peachtree on the Road" and it's always a pleasure working with everyone.
Of course, thank you to the others on the inspection team, everything went incredibly smooth and we have a new volunteer in our ranks! It was also surprising how many teams we had ready and waiting for inspectors! Almost all teams had passed inspection by the end of practice day!!
I can't miss the chance to thank the other refs, you guys were fun to work with and we had a blast. We also barely had anybody in the Question Box! I look forward to more silly hats and noodle crowns at Peachtree ;)
Congratulations to the winning alliance (1319, 1648, 3266), the Chairman's Winners (1902, I'll see you in Orlando!), Engineering Inspiration (1746, lovely bot), and everyone else!
Oh, and I can't help but to be extremely pleased and proud of the teams that happened to share a hotel with me and my folks. Perry isn't the largest of cities, so our hotel was stuffed with a few teams (I only know 1369 was there for sure), and everybody was polite, respectful, and most importantly: quiet at night. It's great to not have to wake up to a grumpy Head Ref! :yikes:

I can honestly say that this regional was the most fun I've ever had at a robotics competition. Huge thanks to the GA FIRST Regional Planning Committee. This event was run incredibly well, better than some long running events I've been to.
Gametime was a welcome addition, and really helped break some of the usual monotony of qualifications rounds. It was great to hear about all of the things teams do that usually go unnoticed unless they win an award. They also put up with our incessant shoutouts, and were kind enough to even read some of them live. I look forward to seeing it again at Peachtree, and hopefully for years to come.
Congrats to 1902 on their chairman's win. Ya'll were a lot fun to talk to and compete with, and you had a great robot to boot. I can't wait to see all the crazy stuff you guys do in the future.
Thanks to 1746 for putting up with us in the pit next door all weekend. I'm excited for your EI win and I hope we get to be next door to you and your sponsors at Peachtree and Worlds.
Thanks to 1319 and 3266. That was an incredible alliance, and ya'll made coaching in the playoffs the easiest coaching I've ever done. We'll see you guys at worlds, and hopefully we can tear it up again in the future.
Lastly, thanks to the practice field staff. As always, they were incredibly kind, and put up with our constant requests for more practice time. No way we could have gotten our robot working as well as it did without them
We'll see a lot of you guys at Peachtree, and hopefully in St. Louis.
Does anyone happen to have a video or pics of 233's 'bot?

Throwing litter and stacking coopertition was a huge part of qualifiers. Also having a lot of short stacks helped.
Lmao you actually made a CD account with the nickname? That's priceless! You get mad love from the GameTime team NoodleJesus.

I would just like to put forth the idea that GSCR should always line up with the Hillbilly Llama show.
Not for any particular STEM reason. It's just that for the people who show up for STEM get to see some awesome llamas and those who show up for the llamas get to check out the STEM.
