View Full Version : Webcasts 2015
Hi Everyone,
With the competition season upon us I thought I would start a thread to keep information on the webcasts organized.
First off, A list of webcast "portals". You should be able to find all of the available webcasts at these sites:
The Blue Alliance Gameday (http://www.thebluealliance.com/gameday)
WatchFIRSTNow Live (http://www.watchfirstnow.com/live)
At The Control (http://atthecontrol.com/)
The Red Alliance (http://www.theredalliance.com/livefeeds.html) *I have not heard if they will be running for the 2015 season.
If you find that any webcasts are missing, please let us know by posting in this thread.
*I would once again like to ask broadcasters to remember to record what you are broadcasting. Teams love to review their matches after events, and it helps build the archive of matches at The Blue Alliance (http://www.thebluealliance.com/) and WatchFIRSTNow (http://www.watchfirstnow.com/archives)
Any webcasts running yet for practice day??

I have been checking in. None are streaming. Some have a countdown, and will start later, likely due to timezone differences.

Palmetto seems to be spotty. Every once and a while you will get an image, but it's not a solid video feed at all.
Northern Lights seems to be the only stream for today. But its a lot of sitting around.
Will dallas have a stream?

If it's not streaming tomorrow I will post some videos from my phone. The only ones I have now are poor resolution from being sent via sms, and they are all of 3310.
www.dallasfirstvideo.com is supposed to be streaming tomorrow.
I really don't know why more events aren't streaming on Twitch. It's way more reliable than Livestream or other alternatives, and it's a great way to reach FRC's target audience...

Snapchats from Lake Superior are totally making my day.

While I was initially going to say maybe the staff running the event aren't "Hip" or "With it", it might also be because teams may be watching events from schools, most of which have security blocks to prevent students from viewing other things on Twitch during school.

Indiana District: http://new.livestream.com/FIRSTRobotics
MAR District: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK54DWpkg27oSI_TWp8QNOQ
MAR will be webcasting the Hatboro-Horsham district event on our YouTube channel. The stream will be at http://youtu.be/hGX2qs6s1CE. If you are having problems connecting to the stream, please double check the MAR YouTube channel to make sure the stream location hasn't changed.
I made a quick guess and it looks like the Michigan districts are being webcast on three different FiM twitch channels:
http://www.twitch.tv/firstinmichigan
http://www.twitch.tv/firstinmichigan2
http://www.twitch.tv/firstinmichigan3
South Florida regional video feed is looking pretty good...but I have really messed up sound. Not sure if it's my computer.

I'm sure it'll start tomorrow since the event is Friday - Sunday

Not true. If you upgrade to their premium package you can embed anywhere.

While I appreciate all of the video feeds, you would think that FIRST would want to nationally manage the video transmission. Have one site, with great video capacity for all of the regionals. (Maybe even HD feeds as some are pretty grainy) It just seems to me that leaving it up to the regional planning committees to provide this, doesn't help FIRST promote their product and allow others besides FIRST enthusiasts to possibly watch the matches. As it is you have to be pretty hard-core FIRST addict to maneuver through umpteen sites to watch the matches. Plus some feeds have horrible buffering issues. Don't get me wrong I like what thebluealliance folks and others have done, I just think it could be a whole lot better.

They can't seem to handle the match data. I'd really hate to have them try to handle live video feeds as well. I know its a new system and all this year, but it was horrible. I do agree that its a pain not having a single source for video but its better than having no video at all. Leave it to those companies like twitch.tv that all they do is video.

I agree, and I'm not saying they should set up their own video service. It just seems to me they could organize contract with Ustream, twitch or whomever to support putting all of the video on from all of the regionals and districts all in one place. The fact that I have to go to a buried page in FIRST(at the very least the link should be on the home page) that has the links to SEVEN different web pages for that may or may not contain the video for specific regionals or districts is ridiculous. I feel like Kamen continues to harp each year on we need get more people to know about FIRST, and appreciate FIRST, this would seem like such an easy thing that FIRST HQ could do to help manage their brand and exposure. Right now they are putting the mercy of their brand and exposure into the hands of each regional to manage the video presentation of the regionals. FIRST ships a semi full of equipment to each regional surely they can provide one additional equipment, PC, video equipment, etc to set this up, so that the only thing the regional/district needs to supply is an internet connection.
On top of all that, I've gone to regionals in the recent past where I had no idea heading there if there was even going to be a broadcast, when I found out at the regional where it would be hosted it was too late because the site was blocked by our school, so people at the school could not watch. Had i known the site ahead of time, I might have been able to get the site unblocked for them to watch.
Rant over.

Actually Eugene, (while I do absolutely love TBA Gameday) a few of the links weren't working on Gameday this weekend. Both the Dallas and Indianapolis streams required you to go to a different webpage to watch the events, and the Hatboro-Horsham MAR District used different streams on Saturday and Sunday, so when you tried to watch it on Sunday, it just replayed Saturday's stream.

That wasn't the fault of TBA. The streaming services used by those events didn't make embedding the cast into TBA work well. Check out this familiar thread (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135205&page=2).

Fair enough. In certain situations (like non-premium Livestream accounts) we really can't do anything. For events that have different links for each day, we usually get contacted about the links being old, but we didn't this week.

I understand and appreciate what TheBlueAlliance is doing. I thoroughly love what your are doing, but once again, my point is, this should be FIRST's responsibility not yours IF they are wanting to manage and promote their product. And as was stated since there are a variety of services being used, some pop you out to a new window or don't work at all. Not your fault, but this is an issue of everyone doing something independent.
FIRST could do a much better job of leveraging opportunities to promote event broadcasts and ensuring their quality across all events.
Major League Hacking (https://mlh.io/) - the organization that helps run 150+ collegiate hackathons across the country - has partnered with Twitch to get their channel (http://www.twitch.tv/mlh) on the homepage and featured in Twitch Weekly (www.twitch.tv/twitch/c/5894318?t=28m30s). The final demos at several hackathons this season have been featured on the homepage. FIRST viewership is potentially much larger, and it should be promoted through FIRST officially and not on dozens of unbranded Twitch channels. Twitch has shown that they're open to expanding the definition of "eSports" to include things like hackathons and robotics competitions, so I think they're an ideal partner to bring this to thousands of people (or more).
The other piece that's really missing is quality production equipment at each event. I was watching the Inland Empire broadcast today and was sorely disappointed by the terrible clipping audio and barely visible video clearly from an interlaced analog source. There are many events that are putting out HD streams with solid audio, there is no reason this equipment should not be standardized for all events worldwide to ensure a minimum baseline standard. Events that have better AV resources and wish to include commentary, interviews, etc can push the production quality bar as high as they can, but we need to ensure that every event has something that's worth watching.

Part of the reason for that is that the streaming process is hardly dealt with by FIRST at all. Oftentimes individual teams are responsible for streaming. I think that looking forward for next year it would be a great idea for FIRST to bring on one or two people to be in charge of event video production and distribution. Getting consistent good quality and I think getting it front paged on twitch would be massive for making it loud.

Some notes to inform your complaints:
FIRST used to have pretty strict standards for AV at events. So much so that they had a national contract with an AV company to produce each event. AV costs for an event could be in the neighborhood of $50k - $75k, depending on the venue. And that was in several years ago dollars. This could be a significant contributor to a regional's budget.
Many regional events are held at large contracted venues. Absolutely nothing is cheap at these places, including internet. Renting a low bandwidth internet drop can often cost several hundred dollars. A higher bandwidth drop can cost a $1k or more. Yes this is highway robbery. Welcome to the world of expo centers. At some venues, this could probably be mitigated by short-term 4G rentals. Of course 4G reception is also horrendous at some venues.
Webcaster actually used to be a volunteer position. I don't know if it still is since I haven't gone through VIMs recently.
In case you're not familiar with regional organization, each regional is run by a Regional Director, often backed by a Regional Planning Committee. Neither the RD nor the RPC is necessarily affliated with HQ. So many regionals are fairly independent and they all handle their own fundraising and budgeting. So it's not like HQ can easily declare they're going to do something at all the regionals and it just happens. It has to filter through each regional's planning and budgeting process.
In summary, it comes down to dollars. High-end AV and internet for a webcast are expensive. HQ mandating such for every event is probably going to cause funding issues at some events, and HQ can't actually just step in and do it all themselves. Thus the current hodgepodge of solutions.
About the best you could do is HQ arranging something with Twitch so that atleast there's a central location for regionals to stream to if they wanted. I suspect even then you're still going to have regionals that go with their own home-rolled solution they've been running for several years.

When that happens it usually means that the internet at the venue used to broadcast the stream is too slow. Not much that can be done about that other than lowering the broadcasting video quality.
Anyone know if there is a live feed from CVR today? I can't seem to find it; TBA has only recorded video from yesterday and the day before.

Israel Regional (3/10 -3/12)
http://www.firstisrael.org.il/frc/page.asp?page=3545
Note: Updated Central Valley Sunday & Israelie
Part of the reason for that is that the streaming process is hardly dealt with by FIRST at all. Oftentimes individual teams are responsible for streaming. I think that looking forward for next year it would be a great idea for FIRST to bring on one or two people to be in charge of event video production and distribution. Getting consistent good quality and I think getting it front paged on twitch would be massive for making it loud.
That would be a great improvement.
So it's not like HQ can easily declare they're going to do something at all the regionals and it just happens. It has to filter through each regional's planning and budgeting process.
I'm not really sure what you mean by this - there are many aspects of regional events that are outlined by HQ and/or the rules. This could be another, if it was decided that quality live streams are categorically important to FRC.

The cost and constraints issue is important, but our team and 1318 in the PNW (much better than us) have demonstrated that HD informative webcasts are possible under these conditions.

I'm not really sure what you mean by this - there are many aspects of regional events that are outlined by HQ and/or the rules. This could be another, if it was decided that quality live streams are categorically important to FRC.As I understand it, most of the mandatory requirements of regionals are more mission critical, like pit sizes, the field, volunteer requirements, etc. Are you proposing that HQ bump webcasts and high quality AV into the mandatory category? In that case a regional that couldn't fundraise the additional costs would have to cut things elsewhere like venue size, team capacity, or just plain fold. I'm not sure a high quality webcast is that important.
The cost and constraints issue is important, but our team and 1318 in the PNW (much better than us) have demonstrated that HD informative webcasts are possible under these conditions. What are you guys using for your video feed and internet? It's difficult for others to replicate success if we don't know what working elsewhere.

What are you guys using for your video feed and internet? It's difficult for others to replicate success if we don't know what working elsewhere.
For those of you who have watched any of the Texas off-season webcasts last year, this is how we do it.
Broadcast FRC (https://docs.google.com/document/d/11vFgn3lyNw12f1H86A5m5g0QFKe3uDuZY65E-svUFOQ/edit#heading=h.3cwabzu1ols4)
This is about as cheap as you can get. It's based off the way the Enginerds have been doing the FiM broadcasts. Boils down to a laptop, gopro, and tall pole. Total cost is under $1000 to have the score overlay, audio, and everything. Here is an example of the stream. (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTocT0DivsNmUGExtGVSuxC5oQa7swcKb) This was also used for the audience display as well at the event. This setup is intended for team use. We use the same setup to webcast FLL and VEX events. I would expect a regional or district to be able to spend a little more money, but if they can't this will work just fine.
Internet at regional venues is the worst part. For Lone Star last year I used a Clear hotspot, that I had lying around and just paid the $50 for the month of up time.
The cost and constraints issue is important, but our team and 1318 in the PNW (much better than us) have demonstrated that HD informative webcasts are possible under these conditions.

I feel bad for being the only team mentioned by Citrus when we are only a small part of a much larger team. About 4-6 teams each week have students and mentors dedicate time to help make PNW live streams great. I think I'm just the only one that cares about the colors being accurate :P
I won't go into the video feed because of how complex/expensive it is, but internet is an easy one. Since we are in a district system most of our venues are high schools where we are given permission to hardwire ourselves to the internet.
This is obviously not possible for most regionals however. This means you will need to go with a system similar to what Allen linked. Clint and Allen have proven, with that guide, that teams can achieve cheap, effective live streams if they believe that it is worth it. The best part is that the team will have instant access to good match videos.
For the MAR webcasts and in-venue video production this year, MAR purchased and assembled some new video equipment totaling around $6k when all is said and done. Unlike the PNW A/V crew, we don't have a dedicated group of volunteers to man this equipment so we have 3 static shots operated at the video switch by 1 operator to minimize volunteer requirements. This cuts down on overall production value, but allows us to use our limited volunteer resources better to suit the teams at the event in other roles while still providing a usable webcast. We're still working on improving a few things with our process, but overall the feedback has been positive.
I started putting together a whitepaper/user manual for the system before the events started, but ran out of time. I'll finish it up some time after 7 weeks of events and post it up here on ChiefDelphi. By no means do I expect individual teams to purchase such a system as it was built to handle some of our video needs at the events as well as stream to the internet.

Thanks. The item at the bottom is just a connector patch panel so we don't have to go connecting onto the individual equipment in the rack. All connections to/from the rack go to this panel.

About 4-6 teams each week have students and mentors dedicate time to help make PNW live streams great.
It's amazing what this has done to the culture out here. A handful of teams have sub-teams of students who dedicate nearly all their competition season time to media exposure for the community. I honestly think this became an amazing rally point. It's certainly brought more students and teams closer together, because of these collaborations.

Yes, I understand that it's a consortium of teams but I believe that 1318 is the engine behind that fine effort. And that was reflected in the Chezy Champs webcast which 1318 did largely on its own. So accept the well deserved kudos! We can only dream to get to that level.:D

Do you mean IRI? Chezy Champs webcast was entirely run by GameSense, though several PNW students helped prep the equipment.
The 1318 students (and Nikki in particular) are the most active on these forums and certainly put a lot of effort in, but it's really the dedicated effort of a few individuals across several teams which drive the production. Nikki, Spencer and Griffin from 1318, Trevor from 2910, Jansen and Kelly from 2046, Alec, Cooper and Maryam from 1983 and many many others are the heart of the effort.

Is the chat box for anyone else on TBA stuck on the "Reminder: You need to log into a Twitch.tv account in order to chat." box? Usually it goes away after a few seconds, but thus far it's been up for 5 minutes, and I haven't figured out a way to get rid of it.
Edit: Mornings.

FYI everybody the links given for wisconsin regional are wrong—the correct links are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDyBsw9FJi4 for Friday and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtUnrK9WR94 for Saturday.
I've tried to get in contact with TBA to get the links fixed but they don't seem to be responding.

Many events have two or three cameras they keep switching between. For this year's game, I wish they just streamed two cameras separately: blue field and red field. I'd even be ok with lower resolution in that case, if that's what you had to do for bandwidth

Anyone know if there will be any stream that will work on mobile for Champs? I know NASA uses UStream for many of their other programs, but it looks like the FIRST Champs will only be using flash.

The Blue Alliance's android app was recently updated with Gameday for watching streams, that should work. (I hope)

Kind of OT but, are you sure? One of the reasons I chose Android over iOS years ago was because of iOS's lack of flash and Android's support of it.

The Blue Alliance's android app was recently updated with Gameday for watching streams, that should work. (I hope)
Indeed it should (I also hope). I pushed an update yesterday that should handle playing CMP streams this year. I tested them with the main NASA TV and it worked, but couldn't with the actual channels because they aren't live yet.
The streams this year actually are m3u8 (html5) video (take a look at the page source (http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/robotics/first/st-louis-2015/archimedes-flash.html) and notice the m3u8 playlists). Since the streams are html5, they can play directly in android's native video player.
Here's the GitHub issue (https://github.com/the-blue-alliance/the-blue-alliance-android/issues/403) for the topic on Android, and for server-side support (https://github.com/the-blue-alliance/the-blue-alliance/pull/1183), if anybody's interested in seeing what we did.

From the NASA page it says the streams are active starting tomorrow. :( So probably not.
iPads are one of the few devices that have flash. Most androids on the other hand do not :(
For the record, this is incorrect. For history - see Steve Jobs' famous Thoughts on Flash (https://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/).
Android officially supported Flash through 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It will still work in some browsers on newer versions, but not in Chrome. And Flash is no longer distributed through the Play Store.
The good news is, as plnyyanks stated, Flash isn't required to watch these streams.
Anyone know why the Tesla and Archimedes streams are showing Hopper practice matches right now?

Is seems that sometimes myTBA button on GameDay doesn't allow new teams to be added to the "favorited teams" list. Is there anything that I can do to get that to work?
To have new teams added, a drop down usually comes up with team numbers' completed and their names, but that doesn't seem to be working for me (at least right now).
Having highlighted matches, especially with 8 streams going, would be really nice for tracking where the action is at.

A strange thing happened to me while watching TBA GameDay today as well. When watching the 8-view of the Champs webcasts, I made Hopper full screen, but it then started to duplicate the Hopper feed in the boxes of the other fields (Archimedes, Newton, for example).

Anyone know why the Tesla and Archimedes streams are showing Hopper practice matches right now?
A strange thing happened to me while watching TBA GameDay today as well. When watching the 8-view of the Champs webcasts, I made Hopper full screen, but it then started to duplicate the Hopper feed in the boxes of the other fields (Archimedes, Newton, for example).
This happened to me too, but it wasn't exclusive to the blue alliance. It was on the NASA site as well

Should be fixed now.
It appears that the Hopper Division is being streamed on multiple division feeds from the Nasa Website.

Yeah, Archimedes and Tesla are repeating it.

Have you tried using NASA's page? The link is somewhere a little bit up in the thread. The streams are in html5, so they should work.
This year, FIRST does not have a twitter feed.

I tried editing the link on the nasa website to get to the Tesla stream becuase just clicking the link redirects you to the Hopper webcast. It says Tesla on the webpage but still shows the Hopper stream.

✔ Horrible resolution
✔ Disappointing over-field view, annoying camera switching
✔ Several fields feeds completely broken
✔ No announcer audio (at least on Curie)
Business as usual...
"HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY" - Some guy saying hey over and over again on the curie division stream. It's pretty annoying.

FIRST & NASA not ready for the big show? Very disappointing! Still no Tesla feed to be seen. Not the kind of experience one expects for a world championship. Bring on the event feedback questionnaire...
This is so disappointing to watch, the quality is so bad, the angles are horrible, the back ground is distracting. Why does this happen every year?

All of the streams showing on The Blue Alliance are directly pulled from the NASA webcast. Earlier, the Archimedes and Tesla NASA streams were playing the Hopper feed instead, but that seems to have since been fixed.

Didn't Frank say at the end of last year that they were putting a group together at FIRST to look at improving the webcasts?
But on the bright side, this won't be an issue once FIRST decides to invite every single team to the championship ;)

I know you're being sarcastic, but it's hard to argue that FIRST and the board of directors really care about trying to give FIRST mainstream popularity with moves like this. The community and state organizations are providing better services than the ones FIRST is providing now (TBA, PNW streaming, FIM broadcasting) and yet apparently those in charge don't see the value in having a good end product.

Tongue in cheek aside, this is not an acceptable experience for current and prospective sponsors, educational vip's or state legislators when a team is trying to secure additional support for their activities (not to mention team members and their families unable to travel to Champs). Really looking forward to 2017 when we double the Champs and stretch the volunteer base....

I completely agree. My point was that while we should provide feedback about the poor webcasts (and lack of match results), FIRST has already acknowledged it as something that can be improved and yet here we are.

I know it's a joke, but this is still a big issue for international teams. I'm up at 0100 (local time) watching poor quality, audio-less streams that make it hard to understand whats going on. Inspiring more teams is a big part of FIRST, making championships double/split may or may not be a big part of that plan. But these streams are struggling to even remind me of the amazing atmosphere and experience championships is.

If FIRST thought that two Championships would improve Champs, it logically follows that they thought having three camera views per field would improve webcasts.

Number of angles can help, but the execution on literally almost every other variable into the process of putting together a good webcast is ignored.

Number of angles is only good when you have one decent full field view on screen at all times, which they're not doing. Not to mention, the only full-field view is from directly overhead, which, coupled with the junk resolution, makes it difficult to even see team numbers.

Those are a small sample of variables that aren't accounted for. The most incredible one is the top down view on robots that have no numbers on the top of them.
I am watching Carver through the link from TBA. 3 views, audio and decent resolution. I can see the team numbers clearly.

Top down also makes it incredibly hard to see how tall stacks are.

I like the split view, because red&blue are operating almost completely independently of eachother and so only seeing one side at a time is silly. I think the third camera (top down) is mostly useless and should just be an occasional feed switch to full screen.

It's a replay of Match 14. The replay also had to be replayed.

Shoot. On it...
EDIT: Hopper was still on lunch break, so the stream was offline. GameDay seems fine for me now
Why does the Galileo feed have a background picture and the others don't?
This is one of the most frustrating things I have ever seen. I can get the feed for Tesla to work for a match or two and then it freezes. When I try to restart the NASA site flashes a 404 error quickly and then shows "Playlist could not be loaded: Error #1090. The Blue Alliance and At The Control shows a message about crossdomains and then just shows the looping arrow. And to top it off, The results haven't updated since match 23.
If there is a streaming site that works reliably, please let me know.
Thanks.

On TBA, is there a way to hide the black bar with the upcoming matches that appears at the bottom of the video window? For me, it never keeps up with the matches, and more importanlyt hides the bottom of the broadcast when I'm in 4 up layout on a 1080p display.

It looks like Archimedes and Tesla will be streaming Opening Cermonies, which makes sense because they are the two fields that will become Einstein Saturday night. Quoted for truth. Everyone blames The Blue Alliance when something goes wrong with the feeds. All they actually do is just take the streams directly from their sources, allowing viewers at home to watch multiple webcasts easily in the same place.
Do two divisions have their audios crossed? That's not TBA. Is are the rankings/results not showing because FIRST isn't publishing them? That's not TBA. Is the quality of the webcast pretty bad? That's not TBA.

We're frustrated because we, the 3rd party providers who rely on a working FRC data feed, get slammed with emails & complaints asking why our product is broken, when in fact it's doing a wonderful job of serving up stale data.

Can we take some time to give it up for Phil, Eugene, everyone else who posts to GitHub for changes, etc, for making the Blue Alliance such an incredible and all-encompassing resource for FRC? I remember what it was like 8 years ago and the strides the community has made for the product do not get enough recognition for how incredible it is. They even rolled out myTBA like it was no big deal. It's awesome!

Oh yes, TBA is a god-send for me when I can't attend competitions. Having 8 streams open in one windows is just plain awesome. And being able to get to schedules and results easily helps when the stream messes up or I'm asleep/at work. It's a shame that FIRST/NASA is the weak link that pull TBA down.
