During qualification matches, the six teams on the field compete together against all teams not on the field. This is a departure from the traditional red versus blue of prior years. Impeding timely completion of coopertition sets or stacks by noodle throwing hurts all teams on the field, while waiting until coopertition is finished benefits them.

I still want my corn dogs and hawaiian pizzas....
For the original poster, yes, we understand this, and therefore we immediately detoured into FRC tropes.
However, at higher levels, you'll see more aggressive fights and eventually minibot-style coin flips for the center Cans. (Mostly playoffs, but potentially also with the correct qual matchup.) There are a few interesting ones in the Week 1 archives.

This was our strategy for our week one competition, however more often than not, one of the alliances was unable/unwilling to complete their part of the coop, and as a result, we never threw our noodles, which ultimately hurt our alliance's Qualification score. I think our alliances threw noodles in less than a handful of matches.
I would caution teams to set a time limit on coop completion, where after a certain time, noodles are thrown regardless. Like it or not, noodle throwing is a huge and important part of this year's game.

Had a "Frank Special" on Saturday night of Inland Empire. Take a wild guess...
...Hawaiian Pizza. (Not at the venue, though--my dad and I went elsewhere.)
