Team 254, NASA Ames Robotics "The Cheesy Poofs", proudly presents our 2015 robot: Deadlift (http://team254.com/first/2015frc).
Deadlift will compete at the Central Valley Regional, Silicon Valley Regional, and FIRST Championship.
Team 254 is sponsored by NASA Ames Research Center, Google, Ooyala, The Mercadante Family, BAE Systems, The Kasle Family, Qualcomm, Intuitive Surgical, Vivid-Hosting, West Coast Products, Mentor Graphics, The Jimenez Family, The Magarelli Family, The Kumar Family, Gilbert Spray Coat, Pacific Coast Metal, Applied Welding, Cisco, Four-D Metal Finishing, and Bellarmine College Preparatory.
Just a picture? (It's an impressive picture, though.)

Beautiful robot as always, 254. Loving the name. Do you even lift, bro?!

Good luck losing a stack from that. One of the sturdiest looking bots I've seen yet.
Also, those intake rollers look familiar...

Looks a fantastic machine as always. Can't wait to see it compete, and hopefully in person at Championships. ;)

Really nice looking robot!
Seems mechanically simplistic but really elegant.
Not surprised to see that 254 has not gone mechanum this year...
Any chance we'll be seeing a reveal video in the near future?

I'd be willing to bet that this isn't even their final form. A very elegant solution, as always. Deadlift will go far this weekend.

Anyone else notice chief being a lot laggier than usual?
No Step Auto mechanism shown.
Looks like a feeder station bot to me.
That's what I was thinking too, but it looks like they might be able to grab totes and the bin with those exterior arms.
But how much do you bench press?
Amazing robot, but I'm not sold we have seen it all yet.

Looking good! Can't wait to see it in action. This is the best implementation of the team numbers that I have seen.

No Step Auto mechanism shown...No, but this (https://www.facebook.com/team254robotics/photos/a.556008844438842.1073741825.122857901087274/926695050703551/?type=1&theater) is on their Facebook page. I don't see it on their robot, but it looks Step Can grab-y.
Looks great, per usual. Can't wait to see it in action!

Hey Audrey. Just for future reference, it's spelled mecanum. No worries, it's an easy mistake to make. Good luck this season!

I'm a fan of robonauts switching to blue and black this year too.

I'm assuming they didn't feel like photoshopping wheels in this year. ;)
Why the off the shelf wheels, and what looks like thunderhex for the drive?
Maybe because colsons get better grip on the HDPE than they could get with other tread?

Pretty sure this thing would bottom out driving over the step with the clearance shown. Then again, it seems like there are a lot of things that still aren't being shown, so I'd guess that these aren't the actual wheels.
Awesome job guys - looks like another great season for 254.

By the looks of it, they don't need to drive over the scoring platform that often. I would assume only on rare occasion they will drive over it judging it upon how tall their intake is but I don't know.
How did we not think of the Mista Ej roomba tether?
Can someone explain this? Who is the nefarious Ej? I've seen him everywhere and seen pictures of his face but never understood it.

Not on the team (obviously) but from talking with Nick Hammes, a mentor for the Poofs, EJ was a student on the original 254 team. He is now a mentor for the team and is the only person still on the team who was there at the beginning.

There's something sinister (in a good way) hiding behind that blue exterior, I can smell it. There's no way the robot is that simple (in terms of what it does).
Or maybe it is and I'm reading into it too much.
Also nice recycling of 2014's intake (hue, it's recycle rush so you gotta recycle right?)
One of my initial ideas that I presented to my team was so similar to this robot, and other ones like it. Had to turn it down for simplicity's sake this season, though. Such a good looking work of art as always.

My thought is that we are only seeing part of this bot. It looks too light and the intake rollers are higher up than I would expect. If this is the entire robot I can't wait to see how it works. You know it is going to be good. Good work 254 you never cease to amaze.

Well actually, the students on the original team were from a different high school.
We still have one of the students gold medal that he signed and gave to us back in 2000.:)
EJ was on the 2001 drive team from the current school. I oughta remember since we were their 3rd of 4 robots on the alliance at the California (name I forget) regional event.

Actually, I don't think that is a photoshop artifact. I think it is just an illusion of the geometry, and the spacer under the polycarb makes the viewing angle insufficient to see the drivetrain tube.

Open ended GT2 or GT3 belts from sdp sI most likely.

Not sure where they got them, but I know SDP-SI will quote you custom belt lengths (and pulley sizes) if you ask. Pulleys typically get a tooling charge tacked on if I remember correctly though.

It's weird, because the entire length of tubing is very awkward and out of place, especially for 254. Its routed on the outside of the box tube, while we can clearly see more tube on the inside, it flows over the electronics, most the zipties connecting the 2 strands together are not cut at the tips, there is an out of place zip-tie on the middle-right cross member, and all the right intake plumbing is not facing the camera.
Considering all of that, I would say it isn't a stray tube for a magic bin grabber, like Andrew may or may not have been implying. It looks like the intake was probably taken off for maintenance reasons and quickly put on for the purpose of a photo shoot, along with all the pneumatic plumbing.
All that being said, it looks like another world championship winner, and I can't wait to see it work!

Perhaps extending the tubing all the way out under the intake pivot mount would have caused clearance issues with the scoring platform. They might have also needed better access to the pivot mount for the intake there compared to if that tube was there under it in the way.

I wonder if those ingestor wheels are soft like the McMaster drive rollers, or just rubber sheet?
Open ended GT2 or GT3 belts from sdp sI most likely.
Ah, this explains why their open ended belts were so out of stock. Took me three hours of clicking to find two closed belts long enough to do what we needed, ha.

jnicho15, I believe that their intake rollers are something like this (http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-polyurethane-hollow-tubing/=w6fabm) from McMaster. I remember something about this stuff on their last year's robot.
You can use compressed air to slip it on the roller, and you don't even have to rivet/glue it, it simply sticks in place.
fr05ty27355
05-03-2015, 15:08
It would also appear as though their RC grabber can extend outwards. Step can grabber?
EDIT: Never mind, I think that's just for picking up RC that have been tipped over (a slick addition nonetheless).

Does anybody have the conversion from hellas to candle-seconds?
I'm assuming that you are referencing size of their robot. Now are we talking a standard candle? If so, we know that a standardized candle burns at 0.48 inches every hour. Now we would need to know the hella to inches conversion. I would assume hella big would be 1 hella. Now if we assume 254 used all the allotted space they would be 6'6". 6'6" is equivalent to 78 inches. So that would be 162.5 candle hours. Since you asked for candle seconds I have also included those: 254s robot is 585,000 candle seconds tall. Therefore hella big equates to roughly 162.5 candle hours or 585,000 candle seconds, assuming they maxed their height.
