Hey Guys,
I just checked the FIRST Championship website and it looks like FIRST is going with a Concert format similar to what they did in 2011.
The performers are:
Boys Like Girls - American rock band
Christina Grimmie - Singer-songwriter, Competitor on NBC's The Voice
Andy Caldwell - American electronic house music DJ
Here's the description of the Finale from their website:
We are excited to announce the FIRST Championship Finale entertainment! This year, Boys Like Girls will be playing LIVE with opening act, Christina Grimmie. There will also be a special appearance by Andy Caldwell. The event is FREE with attendee badge and will follow Closing Ceremony at the Edward Jones Dome from 6:30 PM to 10 PM. There will be food for sale at the venue and no tickets sold at the door
That description can be found here: http://www.firstchampionship.org/first-championship/first-fun
Should be interesting.

When your team main or alternate contact checks in at pit admin, my understanding is that they will receive a bunch of badges for their team - they're requiring that everyone be individually registered this year and they'll get a badge with their name on it.

Boys Like Girls singing their songs about heroine and being drunk is super appropriate for young FLL children.

I have heard of exactly none of these artists. But I'll take the general fan[boy/girl]ing in the thread to say this is a good thing. :)

I was an FLL team member at the 2011 FIRST Championship. The Black Eyed Peas concert was good, but I didn't feel it was entirely appropriate for young children. From my YouTube research on the aforementioned artists, I believe they are even less appropriate. I hope in the future FIRST chooses artists that support quality values, not the "one last night" mindset.

Boys like girls is probably comparable to Simple Plan...

I couldn't get out of the stadium fast enough.

FIRST promotes robots fairly heavy, yet there are tons of movies that depict robots as killing machines. Does this mean one of the major aspects of this program should be outlawed? We live in a society where people are free to make their flavor of music and we as people are attracted to it. There is really no way around it besides to pick a music group that maybe only 5% of the community likes, which I hope they would never do. Its not like they are playing hollywood undead or something like that

Will the food and drink prices be subsidized by FIRST at all, or is this merely a huge money grab for the stadium's concessions provider?

Sure there are tons of killer robot movies, but there are also tons of fun family friendly robot movies, like Big Hero 6, The Iron Giant, I Robot, etc.
Maybe I'm showing signs of age when I say I'm not a huge fan of some of the messages in the music that kids listen to today. I'm not saying we need to have children's entertainers on stage, but I would hope that the choice of artists, and the song choices, would keep the junior high to high school target audience in mind.
I recall an awkward moment a few years ago when I was driving a friend's 14-year-old daughter somewhere. Lady Gaga's LoveGame came on the radio and the girl started singing along enthusiastically. Until she had an "oh.. wait" moment, went silent and turned crimson red. (For reference, I am a guy in my mid-30's).

Film makers are free to produce what they hope will make money. Sometimes the big sellers depict robot violence, though I wouldn't expect FIRST to hold a showing of such a film. FIRST is something kids can get involved in that will enrich their lives and build a brighter future. From what I see of the performing artists, their lyrics do not jive with the FIRST culture. I take no issue if you are attracted to that type of music, I would simply ask FIRST picks something a bit more family friendly. This is a rather moot point anyway, as it is an optional concert.

Let's be honest. Artists that "support quality values" will not be exciting for teenagers.
We're talking FIRST students here. We know they're quality kids. One show from an artist that doesn't fully support quality values will not drive these students down the wrong path.

What about for those of us coming despite our team not qualifying. Our mentor who arranges travel was able to reserve passes for us but it doesn't talk about where to pick up these passes.

I don't know about this year, but they usually have a bunch of tables set-up in the hallway of America's Center and one is designated for Finale wristbands/tickets/passes/etc. and from my experience, anyone can pick them up, even if someone reserved them for you. They were sorted by name last time I picked them up, not team number. Though I expect that to be different this year.

I would agree that teenagers (including myself) are commonly more interested in less wholesome music. Though it would be nice to keep the younger kids away from such music as long as possible.

Yes, Glenn, I too will always remember that concert and standing right next to you just before you went up on stage. For those of you who don't know or remember, that was when the great 359 rightfully joined the HOF!!!

Boys like Girls huh? Still cleaner then half of whats trending on the radio now anyway. Personally instead of sheltering kids from what they will eventually be exposed to I would rather have kids be exposed to something in a controlled environment where I am more able in influence reactions. But that is a complete other conversation.

Will i am volunteered himself and his group to give us a concert for free.
He attends FIRST kickoff.
He has been to every Championship since 2011.
He brings his mother to the Championship.
NASA selected him to write a song about science to be broadcast from Mars. (http://www.csmonitor.com/Science/2012/0828/will.i.am-NASA-team-up-for-first-song-from-Mars-video)
He personally funded a 1 hour FIRST documentary during network television prime time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLMOKM4QKcE&list=PL2A4640B848F63156)
will.i.am's i.am.angel Foundation, in partnership with Discovery Education of Silver Spring, Md., a provider of digital resources to kindergarten through grade 12 classrooms, will announce a new science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics initiative featuring NASA assets such as the Mars Curiosity Rover.
We don't have a huge list of celebrities willing to spend these kinds of resources to help us. Thank you again Will, please keep it up

I miss Orlando as well. And those bottles of FIRST water from Mt. Shasta. Granted, I think more was thrown on my fellow students then consumed in 02.

Yes I'd be all for this! Boys Like Girls is too much of a throwback to my middle school years...not sure how much I like the concert finale in general though. I liked the variety of activities at the finales last year and the year before, plus you could actively mingle with other teams :)

It was loud and I think there was music and I may not have eardrums anymore.
I heard them plenty rehearsing while we were setting up the elimination pits the night before. I was tired and hungry and I went and ate dinner in the volunteer lounge instead. Sitting down was nice.
