Below is the listing of invited teams for the 2015 IRI.
74 Teams, with the expectation of a final field of 66-70 after teams make final decisions.
The list includes all 4 teams from the 2014 IRI Winning Alliance, a team from Israel, and a total of 18 teams who will be attending their first IRI.
Thank you to all of the teams that applied. We had a real challenge to select teams.
Invited teams should receive an email invitation and also a Paypal invoice to the main contact listed on the application form.

Definitely disappointed in not seeing 865, but overall that's a stunning list of teams.

Teams 340 & 3015 are extremely excited to have a chance to play with all of these incredible teams!
As always, IRI is a world class event and we can't thank the planning committe enough for their efforts. See you all in a few weeks!

Some incredible machines both on and off this list.
I'm excited to attend my third IRI, and I'm pumped to see both 20 and 5254 on the list.
Other New York teams 340, 3015.
I'm interested to see how well New York's best perform at the most competitive event in FIRST.
Although I am disappointed 1126 and 1511 didn't make it in. Both machines were capable of 2+ stacks per match pretty consistently.

Congrats to all the teams who've been accepted! I know this year will be a great event as usual.
One thing I noticed is the absence of a few powerhouse teams - namely 254 and 987. I heard that 987 will be in China during this time; I assume the Poofs are also committed or simply won't be traveling so far this time, seeing as they didn't send in an application. Regardless, there's still an incredible number of powerhouse teams from around the globe on this list, and I'm excited to see all of them once again! :D

The ones around the event will be sucked up in seconds.

Main surprises to me would be the lack of 4587 and 865, both had incredible machines.
The list still looks insanely stacked, we are excited to attend!

Kudos to the teams who made it in IRI will be very exciting!
Very sad to see 4587 and 865 off the list. 865 has created a very deadly machine that is unfortunately a late bloomer.:(
Congrats to all the teams that got in, especially our Minnesota friends 2502, 2512, and 3130!

865 is definitely the best landfill bot to apply and not make it in.
4587, 1987 had awesome and creative designs that were also effective that would have been sick to see in action at IRI.
1126, 1511, and many others on the list were consistent stackers at the feeder station making 2+ stacks/match as well.
But we all knew amazing robots were going to be left out, and thats definitely not limited to just these five. These are just the ones that stood out the most to me.

Congrats to the invited teams!
It will be interesting to see how teams manage 3 HP robot alliances. A number of top teams require a stationary mechanism (1325,148,1023...) at the HP station. Keeping the flow going could be very rewarding.
A couple of our members will probably be spectating again this year. We had a great time last year.

With the TechnoKats' mediocre* robot performance this season, we decided not to apply. We didn't want the selection committee to have to pass us over. :-)
* Precisely middle-of-the-road -- we were ranked 50th in Galileo.

We are looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting/making new friends.

Cool to see the whole Michigan State Championship winning alliance made it on the invite list. It doesn't look like any of the other districts have all three winning alliance members going.
Makes me wonder if there are any regional winning alliances that will all be there together.

We're not busy. Unfortunately this game sucks and is not worth the added expense (and time off work, for mentors) to travel to Indiana for.
We will miss seeing our friends and look forward to a game worth playing, so we can see them next year!

Man this quote should be included in the history book when talking about this game
We're not busy. Unfortunately this game sucks and is not worth the added expense (and time off work, for mentors) to travel to Indiana for.
Wow, after all that work you guys put into re-vamping your robot for SVR and then Champs, suddenly the game is not worth playing!
Everyone's entitled to their opinion I guess, but that's definitely not an attitude I've encouraged students to have when participating in any engineering challenge, regardless of how interesting the project is. Definitely couldn't get away with saying that at an engineering job even if the project isn't the most interesting you've worked.

I can imagine the conversation went something like this:
254 Student 1: "Hey man, want to spend thousands of dollars to fly out to middle-of-nowhere Indiana, do the same thing on the field that we've been doing in the shop for 4 months, and then maybe loose in the end because some kid can throw a fun noodle further than 35 feet?"
254 Student 2: "Not really..."
254 Student 1: "Yeah, me either..."

The thing is that it's an off season event which is 2000 miles away from them, that costs real money and time to attend.

254 knew they would be attending CVR, SVR, and Champs (qualified by winning champs last year and Hall of Fame) before the game was released. To back out of a regular season event because of the game would be silly.
Picking which offseasons to attend is like choosing which regionals/districts to attend. Some teams (359, 341, and 233 come to mind), choose to travel across the country for regionals. Why? Because they believe travelling would benefit their program and the students within it, despite the additional costs of travel. 254's decision to not apply to IRI demonstrates that they believe the costs outweigh the benefits (It's almost like the decision was made by a bunch of engineers). Should they attend other offseason events, it would because the cost benefit analysis comes out with positive results.

Yes, and what you describe is the cost benefit analysis we used when we decided not to go to Champs this year (we had a wild card spot). And deciding not to go for the reason of cost/time is perfectly reasonable, rather than saying "this game sucks so we're not going".
Obviously the cost-benefit analysis from prior years led to the decision to go, and Cory even followed up with the plan to attend next year in anticipation of a more positive cost-benefit analysis. With all else the same, that leaves the single variable here as "this game sucks" as the reason they are not attending. So be it, doesn't really matter. Just hope this doesn't translate to several years in a row of the same decision point because the game didn't meet the team's hopes and desires.
We're not busy. Unfortunately this game sucks and is not worth the added expense

Chezy Champs has a dramatically different rule set than IRI. I'd also be shocked if any team from Indiana flew across the country to compete there.

I wouldnt say dramatically different. I'd say goes further than IRI in changing the game.
on an unrelated note, I'm sad to see no PNW teams, but that's probably a cost/distance issue (I imagine we'll see a few at Cheezy Champz)

Lets try to keep this thread related to the awesomeness of IRI and the teams invited to it.

Sponsorship is everything. Without it, there is no way we do what we do. The main reason we travel though is due to our location. With only one FRC Event, we feel it's not worth doing FRC if it's just going to be a one weekend thing after all the work put into it.
One could also say it's the building experience that's the most important part, which is absolutely true. But there are tons of other STEM experiences that are much less expensive.
Does anyone know when the deadline to accept is? We are still waiting to tag this trip with either the EP VEX Summit or Air Force Academy teacher training for some of us who want to go to IRI.
Airfares are killer this year too!

If you hold an event in an area that also doubles as a travel destination of sorts you have more incentive to spend the time/money to attend an event. Indiana isn't a bad place to travel to and we all are entitled to our own opinions but it doesn't have the same appeal as attending a regional in Florida or Southern California for us Northerners who need some time in warm weather in the winter.
Even then it is a considerable cost and if you've had a long exhausting competition season some years you need a summer break even if you have one of the top robots of the year.

This is a 5 minute response – too busy for more – so please don’t put more thought into this post than I have
It is GREAT to have highly competitive events in the Midwest and the west coast for the teams who value the competition.
We have not had a chance to experience Chezy Champs but based of feedback from friends it must be a tremendous event and we hope to participate in the future.
We have been fortunate enough to experience the Midwestern warmth and competition of IRI and are eager to do it again this year.
All that said, I think that it might be more constructive if the folks who choose not to travel to participate in one event or the other would aim for a bit higher ground and not belittle the experience, the game, or the events for others.
Just one mans opinion.
Thanks,
Mark

After going the previous 5 years, we hope to be back the following year.

Sad to see. Good luck to 359 in any other off season event planned for this summer and fall. ;)

Hey guys. I made a pre-scouting sheet for the fun of it. It includes lots of data! Using Ed Law's (Coach for 2834) Scouting Database and The Blue Alliance, I was able to make this sheet. It includes every team invited to IRI except for any team Chris has already said declined to come (1 team). I will update it if any other teams decline.
If you have any suggestions on what to add, just comment in the stream. I will re-upload if I add or edit anything. If I am capable of doing it, I will add whatever suggestions you have. Thanks and enjoy!
Update 6/6/15: Re-uploaded after seeing that 359 declined. Now including any off-season event teams have gone to up to 6/6/15. Only including off-season events Blue Alliance has data for. Some events that have already happened have no data on them.

We have not had contact from Team 3098 the Captains.
If someone has a contact with them, can you ask them to contact us about their IRI plans?

I send Steve a note on FB, and point him to your post.
EDIT: DONE.
I just noticed Steve had a daughter on the 16th... Robots may be at a lower priority at this moment. Congrats to the new Captain Steve. :)
If anyone is holding spare rooms at the Drury Inn that are not needed, can you please release them? I got distracted with too many things and didn't book hotel rooms, and they are all booked. If you are going to release some, and are willing, please pm me when you plan to do it, so I can call in and get them. I'm looking for 3 more rooms. Thanks!!

548 was not a division finalist, they lost in semifinals. Although they definitely had an einstein-caliber machine. :)

Correct, I was looking at rankings and saw them second and for some reason assumed they made the finals. Nice catch.

148 not going is a little bit of a surprise for me. Although it is reasonable to think they decided it wasn't worth it to play recycle rush again.
Pretty sure a big part of the decisions to decline by 118 (possibly decline), 148 and 359 has to do with their joining the group of several other teams going to China in August. Robots had to be shipped a week ago to get there on time.

The teams that are attending the China Robotics Challenge have all shipped their robots already. As one of them this means that 118 has already shipped their robot. They may have shipped their practice robot or plan to use their practice robot at IRI though so you never know.
179 confirmed on twitter they are going to IRI.

Why did The Black Knights decline?
That is sad to see. They are in Indiana and the fee for IRI isn't that bad but you do need to remember they are a Junior and Senior only team so they may not have a big enough team since I know most of them were seniors. It was great seeing them at very competition.

Yeah, that's too bad, they were a fun team to watch, but not attending IRI for a chance to compete in China is a good reason! :D

Why did The Black Knights decline?
Sorry for a late response. I am in Amsterdam and haven't checked CD for a few days.
Team 135 has decided to deny for a few reasons. First and foremost, our senior class (my class) was the main reason we applied in the first place. We wanted to compete and have a fun weekend. However, our entire drive team experienced conflicts.
As Logan pointed out, we are a Junior-Senior team. Our incoming juniors are extremely hard-working and talented, and they are one of the biggest classes we have had to date (up to 40 students!) However, there was not enough support from these newcomers and our rising seniors to take a weekend out of the summer for something they barely knew about. To make the situation more difficult, none of our 3 main coaches were going, and we only had 2 mentors willing to go, neither on the pit team. Because of these reasons, we had no choice but to decline.
Thank you to the IRI commitee for inviting us to this prestigious event. Although we won't be competing in July, you can expect 135 to come out in full force next March. I won't be involved with any teams personally as of now, but I am going to try and volunteer at the Purdue competition next year and maybe another one as well.
I hope everyone is having a great summer so far!

It's more reasonable not to make assumptions about the motivations of other teams.
