View Full Version : CAGE Match VIII
Save the Date: CAGE Match 2015 will be on Saturday, October 17.
It will once again be in the historic Southport Fieldhouse
971 E Banta Road
Indianapolis IN 46227
We are planning many new things for the eighth edition, so be on the lookout for updates.
www.thecagematch.com (http://www.thecagematch.com)
The Planning Committee has been working hard on some innovations to this year's event. I can't tell you about them all now, but it will be pretty cool.
We've had some questions from area teams, and I thought I'd address them here.
Q1. When is registration?
A1. We plan to open team registration on Monday, August 24. We will still have Early Bird discounts for teams that register by September 18.
Q2. Do you need volunteers?
A2. Absolutely, and you can sign up now (http://thecagematch.com/main/volunteer-support)! One of the things we're piloting this year is volunteer training. So if there's a position you've wanted to try, but haven't yet, we can pair you up with a seasoned veteran in that position to see if it's a good fit for you. Simply let us know in the "Is there any other information" field if you'd like to be trained - or to be a trainer.
Q3. Indiana went to districts in 2015. Is this event for Indiana teams only?
A3. We welcome all our FIRST friends! All FRC teams are welcome to join, regardless of geography. We will have a hard cap of 32 teams, to make sure every team plays in eliminations.
Q4. Our team struggles with budget issues. We're not sure we can afford to attend the event.
A4. That's not really a question, but I'll still give advice. :) It is $300, but teams can get up to $50 off with the aforementioned Early Bird discount and with another initiative that is still being finalized. In addition, we host separate Student and Adult Roundtable Discussions where team members can share difficulties as well as best practices to overcome them. Finally, since the CAGE Match is set up to introduce people to coopetitive robotics, we welcome prospective team sponsors and partners. In fact, contact me and I'll make that person a judge at the event, to make sure the hook sets deep. We will also have a VIP experience for those who are not able to be there the entire day.
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!!
Please visit the CAGE Match Registration Page (http://thecagematch.com/main/registration-2) to get your team signed up for this year's CAGE Match. We are accepting 32 teams this year.
There is a discount for teams who register by September 14th; there is another discount for teams who will loan us students to work shifts as VIP tour guides. No team game pieces are necessary this year.
There are more surprises I'm not allowed to share right now - suffice it to say we're planning for a fun, exciting, inviting atmosphere this year.
Volunteer registration (http://thecagematch.com/main/volunteer-support) is open now also. This event provides a great chance to try something you've never done before, to teach others your area of expertise, or to hone your craft.

I have the honor and privilege of being the Head Referee for this year's CAGE Match and am happy to share the rules changes that we've made for Recycle Rush. We've been inspired by many of the other off-season events and the changes they've made and also have had the benefit of seeing how those changes have played out. Without further ado:
Transport Configuration will NOT be enforced.
Yellow totes may be scored as if they were gray totes on scoring platforms. Recycling Containers will score on stacks that have yellow totes.
Teams may re-arrange elements within the staging zones, as long as elements are completely contained within the staging zone at the start of the match.
G6-1DRIVE TEAMS may not use any object to prop the CHUTE DOOR open.
VIOLATION: FOUL. If extended or repeated, YELLOW CARD. If egregious or strategic, RED CARD.
G14Teams may tether to the ROBOT before or after the match if needed to help with setup and/or removal of the robot from the FIELD. However, tethering must be done so safely.
VIOLATION: if unsafe operation occurs, RED CARD.
G24ROBOTS should not cause TOTES, RECYCLING CONTAINERS, and/or LITTER to completely transfer from their side of the FIELD, or from the STEP, onto the opposite side of the FIELD.
VIOLATION: If repeated, YELLOW CARD. If egregious or strategic, RED CARD and offending ROBOT will be DISABLED.
G27ROBOTS may not contact anything outside the FIELD.
VIOLATION: Offending ROBOT will be DISABLED.
Reasoning behind the changes:
With the pits right next to the field, the transport configuration shouldn’t be an issue. Please remember that you still have to be able to bring the robot into the gym through a standard sized door and setup and teardown time restrictions will still be enforced on the field.
Allowing yellow totes to score doesn’t make them a waste during failed coopertitions and eliminations.
Easing staging zone setup will make field set-up easier and less confusing for teams/volunteers.
The G6-1 change makes yellow cards only for extended/repeated offenses for propping open the chute door. We expect a lot of rookie human players and don't want to harshly punish new drive team members for not knowing the intricacy of how to avoid this penalty.
The G14 change is for team Phyxt-Red-Cards. <3 (sorry for the inside joke, it's a entertaining/great story if anyone wants to hear it.)
The G24 change eliminates nuisance penalties for accidentally having objects transfer sides of the field.
The G27 change eliminates disabling for human players double-tapping noodles (which are harmless/not dangerous)

Nice Joke!
I can't believe this is our 8th CAGE Match. It seems like only yesterday that we got together to talk about the possibility of hosting an event.
Through the 8 years AndyMark and the Indiana teams have been there supporting this event. We couldn't do it without them.

It's a story, and probably an entertaining one (especially when told by Danny Blau), but I don't know that I'd call it a great one...

My guess is that it has something to do with our human player or another human player in Indiana or Worlds... but I'm not 100% sure it's that.

Exciting news:
This year's version of the CAGE Match will feature a STEM Fair. We will have booths set up where guests can participate in science experiments, learn more about colleges & universities, and be introduced to area advanced manufacturing & logistics facilities.
Also, we've got our lunch lineup finalized. This year we will feature four vendors:
Emergency Munchie Truck
Far-Out Fred's
Pierogi Love Indy
Taste of the Caribbean
So far seven teams have registered:
1529 - CyberCards - Indianapolis, IN
1741 - Red Alert - Greenwood, IN
4485 - Tribe Tech - Danville, IN
3138 - Innovators - Dayton, OH
461 - Westside Boiler Invasion - West Lafayette, IN

While I remember seeing a noodle or two negate a stack/container score, I don't recall this being a very common issue. Is this maybe more common than what I thought?

Happened to us twice and once at worlds. I am certain that if the stack would have counted we would have had a world record with Poofs. No big deal to me, we just need to learn to not do that...LOL...

Probably not helpful now that the season is over, but is there any way for your robot to slide a stack onto the scoring platform vs. going onto the platform and dropping the stack like you usually do? Just wondering now.

Yes, when we "straddle" stack, that's the way the robot was designed. There is a preset button to lift the stack to the top of the surface via a PID loop, however I remember that we didn't get the preset right on that last stack shown in the video and it lifted too high or the button was pressed a bit early, otherwise the noodle should have never gotten under the stack, it would have been pushed out of the way. The first stack in reference to the video, was stacked we call the "hard way" is not really the way our robot was designed so it's more skill of the drivers to get that stack to stick. But I understand what you are saying and that was our thought process was to get the stack bottom to mate up with the top of the scoring surface so nothing would fit inbetween, but it just didn't work out that way for us.

My personal rankings based on the regular season at IN dcmps.
1. 234 (barely above 135. We've been pretty tight all year)
2. 135
3. 5188
4. 1501
5. 1024
6. 829

12. 461
Alliances- (Captain and First Pick Only)
(W) 1.) 234-1024 (As always. Some unamed students on 234 refer to 1024 as "bae")
(F) 2.) 135-5188 (135 needs some extra step cans)
(S) 3.) 1501-5403 (1501 and 5403 could use some step cans)
(Q) 4.) 829-3940 (3940 is a good stacker and 829's landfill or HP is helpful)
(S) 5.) 1741-1747 (1747 is a super good stacker and 1741 is a really good capper)
(Q)6.) 4485-3176 (4485 has been good at Hp and decided to go landfill early rather than scramble last second)
(Q) 7.) 461-447 (461 decided to go landfill early)
(Q) 8.) 868-1529 (868 can cap (if I remember right) and 1529 is a fast stacker.

That might be true but almost all landfill bots coming aren't nearly as powerful as human player bots. If we end up 1st seed, we have to ask ourselves this question. Do we want to get an amazing human player bot and then get another not so good human player bot and make them try to play the landfill or, do we want an okay landfill bot and have a not so good hp bot? Either way, the last pick for the first few alliances won't be able to stack much. So it makes more sense to go with whichever robot is best, human player or landfill. That's what we did at CORI offseason and we ended up winning. It will be interested to see how picks go with such a tight field.

The thing is, once you get past the top 3 or 4 HP robots, you pretty much have a group of bots with the same stacking ability (1 6 stack). So with such a shallow playing field, alliances can afford to make medium ability (1-2 stacks) landfill bots their first pick.

Exactly. That "strategy" will only work for the top 2 or 3 alliances :)

Being an event happening during the next school year after the robots were built, several teams will not have the same drive team.
Being an event that is touted as a "rookie experience" several teams will not have the same drive team.
Being an event with pre-rookie teams, not every drive team will have ever competed.
These, plus wear + tear + modifications means several robots will not perform the same as they did during the season. Predictions might be fun, but are kind of meaningless since so much will have changed compared to in-season competitions.
I'm looking forward to CAGE Match for all the new and fun experiences the students will have.

Definitely we were just having some fun and I specifically said mine were based off of the Indiana DCMPS. Honestly, our team has like 7 or 8 drive teams members due to training rookie drivers and preactice for the all girls event. We could easily rotate and none of our drive team members perform exactly the same. Agreed. plus, we have perfected our 3 tote auto and i bet some other teams have made some improvements as well. Still looking forward to the event! :)

2 of our main 3 drivers are still around. 3 of 4 drivers are still around that had regular season driving. And 5 of 6 drivers are still around that have had some off season driving experience at a competition. As a team, we just excepted 20 some new members this last Monday. This will be a good time to train new members how to scout (despite not having our new scouting equipment) what we do at competitions. I find the fall off season events to be cool for those reasons.

As scout captain of 234, It sounds like I should train some of the rookie members to scout this week... If there is a webcast (Is it bad I'm not sure if there is a webcast? lol.) yo bet I'll be scouting from home... haha. or maybe volunteer and scout in my mind... The possibilities are endless! Can you tell it's been a couple months since I've scouted and I really want to...? haha

Run through qualifying matches from a season event (or even better, an event that played something other than Recycle Rush). 2015 Dallas and 2014 Waterloo are good regional ones to watch. The new scouts you get can pretend to field scout the regional. We did this last year to test out our electronic scouting system and train our scouts, and it was a big success.

The new scouts you get can pretend to field scout the regional. We did this last year to test out our electronic scouting system and train our scouts, and it was a big success.
That's a really good idea. I'm not sure what we as a team plan on doing for scouting equipment next year. The whole new scouting equipment choice is on me and what money we can get from grants or from team sponsorships. Right now, we are planning on possibly getting tablets and running some for of excel so we can pull the data to a computer and compute power rankings on a device like tableu. Another route we are looking at is maybe developing some android app for scouting, computing the data in real time from a server and being able to more automated things. Whichever route we decide to go down, doing practice scouting on old regionals will be helpful.

If everything goes according to plan, we should be bringing a surprise to CAGE that should make some people happy.
As always our drivers will be pretty inexperienced but our inexperienced drivers helped us get to the finals at R2OC and were able to put up 60 points solo at CORI.

Below is a copy of the email blast that went to team contacts for CAGE.
Hello CAGE Match Teams!
Thank you for registering to attend the 8th CAGE Match. This event is only one week and some change away so we would like to share some information with you about the upcoming festivities. Thank you to our sponsors AndyMark and Waterjet Cutting of Indiana for making this event possible. Thanks also to Team 45 the TechnoKats, and Team 1741 Red Alert Robotics.
CAGE is here to help your students and mentors new and old prepare for the 2016 FRC season by offering a district similar event that is close how your actual in season event may go.
When: October 17th. Doors Open at 7am
Where: Southport High School, 971 E. Banta Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46227
Volunteer Opportunities
It takes the helping hands of many individuals to pull off any event in FIRST. If you have a desire to be part of the reason CAGE is a success, please visit the volunteer webpage on our website and signup. All volunteers are fed the most delicious of lunches for providing help. If the event is short handed in key areas we may ask some of the VIP volunteered students if they're willing to aid us in other areas.
Silent Auction
One of our favorite things to do is help those in our community pursue further education. The Arthur Anderson Memorial Scholarship (more details below) is funded primarily by the silent auction hosted during the event. We encourage teams and individuals to bring your items of interest to be a part of the fun auction and help a CAGE Match attending senior.
Ronald McDonald House Donations
Giving back to the community is something that is near and dear to the FIRST community. CAGE attending teams have come together to provide over 40,000 donations for the families being supported by the Ronald McDonald House over the past several years. This is so important to us we want to ask attending teams to again, help us make a difference in those families lives. We would like to ask teams to bring items off of the linked list as a part of their entry to CAGE.
Round Tables
In an effort to help make the newer members feel prepared we are again offering two round tables during the event. A student round table starts at 11am and an adult round table happens at 1pm. These round tables will have some topics ready to go to begin discussions then will open up for questions. This is a great place for new members to learn through discussion how future events and the season may go.
Load In/Out & Check In
Southport High School is located at 971 E Banta Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46227. The entrance for load in and out is on the south side of the building and can be accessed by either Banta Rd. or Shelby St. entrances. Teams can choose to load in Saturday morning after doors open at 7AM or Friday during event setup between 3pm and 7pm.
We want to ensure everyone makes it to the event so please visit the small booth just inside the load in area either Friday night (during setup) or Saturday morning. We will have a packet of goodies including the pit map and other information.
STEM Fair Details
To make this more than just an offseason event, a place for teams and students to get a start we are aiming to host a STEM Fair. This STEM Fair will showcase unique organizations and inventions to inspire students and give them more information on potential STEM careers. The STEM Fair would consist of interactive activities for students (of all ages) and adults to take part in
Scholarship Opportunities
In honor and memory of the fantastic role model as well as exemplary citizen that Art Anderson was, CAGE will continue to offer the Arthur Anderson Memorial Scholarship to one CAGE attending high school senior. This scholarship as stated above is primarily funded by the Silent Auction so we ask you to consider participating in donating an item. The scholarship form is attached to this email. Please share with your seniors and note the submission must be received by the 15th. Details of where to send are within.
Pit Map
The pit map will be included in an information packet given to teams at check-in. You will also find match schedules in this packet.

Teams may re-arrange elements within the staging zones, as long as elements are completely contained within the staging zone at the start of the match.
Does this mean we could stack all three yellow totes in one zone and then push them for a tote stack?:D :D :D
Just a thought...
Recall that the Staging Zones are three distinct rectangles on the field. Each Zone may have a max of one Tote and one Recycling Container.

It would be much easier if the three golden totes could be pre-stacked and sitting by the step. :)

That would make co-op even easier than it already is for you guys. Btw, can't wait to see the tribe tech machine again. Any modifications?

Dang! We should get a rule change for that one too Logan.

This was actually the case. We were having internet issues with the other laptop and just decided to use Spencer's because it was working.
