View Full Version : Need help: reasons to join a robotics team (words and phrases)
We're trying to make an awesome t-shirt for the beginning of the school year for our FRC and FTC program. On the back of the shirt, we want to put reasons why you should join robotics. We got input from our team, but we need your help. Please give us a one to three word response about why you joined robotics.
We're trying to re-brand our team and want to start off our season with a bang, so if you have any other cool ideas for advertising please let us know.
Some of the things we have so far (we may or may not use all of these) are:
Programming
Computer Aided Design
Electronics
Pneumatics
Math
Engineering
Science
Technology
Power Tools
Building Stuff
Travel
Public Speaking
Promotion
Leadership
Website design
Social Media
Event Planning
Photography
Video Production
Press Releases
App Design
Opportunities
Exciting Friendship Experience
Gracious Professionalism
Girls/Guys in STEM
Fun
Competition
Thank you! :) :) :)

Thanks for your help! I didn't see that one when I looked.
If anyone had others to add, though, that would be awesome.

I don't know if your team has this aspect, but mine has a budding financial team (currently me and a mentor), so you could mention finance. Didn't join for it, stayed for it though :) .

Scholarships (http://www.usfirst.org/aboutus/scholarships) are a pretty big draw for some people.
If you wanted it in three words, I could quote the scholarship video from last year:
"Apply, apply, apply!"
It looks like you left out I & R (Inspiretion and Recognition).
They're a bit longer than some of yours, but "Sport for the Mind" and "Hardest Fun You'll Ever Have" grab the attention.

Smell of Solder
Grease and Aluminum Shavings
"I joined the FIRST Robotics team because I love sniffing solder and covering my hands in grease and aluminum shavings!"
-probably someone somewhere

Don't worry you don't need to keep it a secret anymore.

While it's not why I started mentoring, I grew up with a ham radio dad who loved to tinker. Burning resin is as much a "smell of home" as a pot of gumbo simmering or chocolate chip cookies baking.

Learn how to succeed
Free food. Friends. Self-esteem.
(Plus the smell of the build shop grows on you. I love covering my hands in grease and aluminum shavings, its a great exfoliator.)
For the groupies/fans, of course.
Sneaking a little humor into the list is probably a good idea.
I love all these. Some other ideas are:
goats
duct tape comes in many colors
possibility of taking over the world someday
zip ties
pizza for every meal
more duct tape
flame throwers
possibility of explosions at each meeting
duct tape (need I say more?)
Does anyone have any more funny ones?
Here's some older ones:
"The Super Bowl of Smarts"
"The Hardest Fun You'll Ever Have"
"The ONLY Sport Where Everyone Can Turn Pro"
One or two of these were official FIRST lines back a "few" years ago.

A+ reasons right there
the thing that kept me hooked in robotics was being able to observe the brilliance of others (I mean, I got to see simbot sideswipe... UP CLOSE). So, "solving real challenges brilliantly" ?
or alternatively, "the one place where you can seem like a good dancer," and "gaining early support of our future robot overlords" those are too long, but I am not a concise person

That's alot of cheese. Are you sure you're talking about reasons to join a robotics team or reasons to avoid one? :D

Jared Russell from 254 wanted to see if Frank read Chief Delphi.
It's suspicious how right after we talk about something on Chief Delphi, Frank addresses it. Let's put it to the test.
WE DEMAND FREE CORNDOGS FOR ALL MENTORS UPON ENTRY INTO THE EDWARD JONES DOME.
#yourmovefrank
Frank's response was:
There will be no free corn dogs at the FIRST Championship. There will especially be no free corn dogs at the FIRST Championship for Jared from the Poofs. No free corn dogs for you.
Jared + Mentors - Corndogs = Memes

Soooo we blame jared for life's problems?
problems being not enough corndogs
Thanks to everyone who helped. Here is a first draft of the back of our t-shirt. We still need to make a few changes, so if you have any input on the design please let me know. There are a couple of inside jokes ("swumming" is spelled correctly).
Now I am hungry for corn dogs. Where are the free corn dogs when you need them?
That's a fantastic design! :D
I would say put more hashtags or remove the one there is to preserve a kind of homogenity. "Pizza!" looks like "Pizzd".
Also- "Swumming"? :P
No "Getting in 'good' with our future robotic overlords"?
Enhanced general competence.

the hashtag kinda makes omgrobots work... seems weird without it. and yes, a lot of the words that have an "a" as the last or second to last letter look like "d"s instead

Just wondering, what font did you use for that?

Pokemon font!
We are changing our name to Team Rocket, based on the comedy relief villains in Pokemon. It's to connect more with our school (mascot is the Rockets) while having a touch of the robotics culture. Everyone has liked it so far. We'll probably make the "R" on the front more of an outline next printing.

Team 20 is The Rocketeers, but at 2013 River Rage (an off-season competition), we had much of the team dressed with white shirts and red R's as "Team Rocket". For selecting our second partner, our field representative and our first pick's field representative (151) read off the entire Team Rocket chant in order to select 190.
If this isn't already a part of your branding plan, it should be because it was fantastic, and with a little extra effort (not spray painted red R's on white t-shirts and more enthusiasm on the field), it could be legendary.
