I am happy to announce that GameSense will be returning to Chezy Champs again this year!
We are all super excited to be heading back to such a wonderful event. You can expect the same coverage, stats, and overlays from last year, and a few new surprises as well!
This whole endeavor would not be possible without the great support we have received from everyone working on Chezy Champs and team 254. In addition to this, we would also like to take this opportunity to thank GameSense's sponsor Symbotic (http://www.symbotic.com)for making it possible for us to attend the event this year. Symbotic has just signed on to sponsor GameSense for the second year in a row, and we could not be more thankful!
So don't forget to tune in and watch the best of the West compete on Saturday 9/19 and Sunday 9/20 at chezychamps.com!

GameSense provided excellent commentary last year, cannot wait to hear what the crew has to say this year.
See you all there!

We will be recording the native 1080p/60 feed at 20mbps. It will be streamed at 1080p as well and transcoded on the server end for those with slower connections. The stream will be ad free and embedded in the CC website and elsewhere. With the help of some new streaming providers to be announced soon we hope to give viewers the best possible live streaming coverage currently available.

Is this something worked out with providers specifically sponsoring CC or is this a system that could be adopted for regional tournaments? A white paper on the setup, if it works, would be appreciated.

I can speak to the streaming side of this setup.
Last year, I was in charge of the live streams for NE FIRST. During my evaluations of which streaming platform to use, I noticed that there really isn't an ideal streaming platform for FRC.
My friend and I are developing a new streaming platform called STEMtv (www.stemtv.io (http://www.stemtv.io)) that aims to bring the STEM community the best, highest quality, streaming service possible, for free.
http://i.imgur.com/jvZ5N68.png (http://www.stemtv.io)
We're working hard to offer:
Resolutions up to 1080p at 30fps.
Server-side transcoding for viewers with lower bandwidth.
Cloud-based architecture capable of supporting any number of viewers.
Easy embedding of the player on your website.
Support for multiple streaming applications.
Downloadable/Exportable recordings of your streams.
Live DVR capabilities.
Over the past month, we've been working closely with the Chezy Champs crew to test our platform and they've been kind enough to give us the opportunity to stream the event live!
If you have any questions, or would like more information, please feel free to get ahold of us at http://stemtv.io/contact/

Why not 1080p60?

Recordings will be uploaded at 1080p/60 at ~20mbps. Live streaming at 1080p/60 is very bandwidth intensive and most users cannot take advantage of it.

Regardless, who needs to see totes being stacked at 60fps? It's only cool to see at 60fps when things get knocked over. 😛
But how will we know who truly has the fastest can grabber?

You couldn't tell with just 60fps anyways :p
We would need a phantom, a warehouse full of light, and a f/.7 lens. /s
On another note, I like the idea of StemTV, but what makes you so sure that your backend will be able to support "any number of viewers"?

We're using Amazon Web Services. The same backend that Netflix and Spotify use.

What was it about other streaming services that you didn't like? Camera switching abilities or the like?

In my opinion, due to the rule changes.... can grabbing will be limited in value at chezy champs.

Yup in regards to speed.
We're running substantially slower can grabbers than at champs.
I do think in elims you'll see an alliance or two that can score more than 6 cans routinely.

I would assume any number of the issues that have plagued FIRST webcasts for years: overzealous copyright claims on music, uncontrollable ads interrupting broadcasts, general quality/stability issues, terrible resolution, no automatic archive, and so on.
I'm suprised that the STEMtv announcement isn't generating more attention. Having a purpose-built solution and site for robotics events is a huge deal, which should dramatically improve the accessability of these events.

Pretty much this. Also, since we'll be a small (smaller than Twitch or YouTube) operation, we'll be able to provide a much more tailored experience.

From my limited knowledge of it, Twitch can get around almost all of those issues. Copyright music claims are the only issue, but the way they handle it is just muting the archive at that point.

The broadcaster can't control the ad that plays when a user loads a stream on Twitch. As a result, you get high school and middle school kids watching a Call of Duty ad where someone gets tortured. This is the issue I ran into last year when I was running NE FIRST's webcasts.
If you don't have enough viewers, Twitch will also disable transcoding, forcing users to watch the stream at its source resolution regardless of their internet speed.
Additionally, FRC is technically not a video game and Twitch has removed FRC streams (and accounts) in the past for that reason.

Ah gotcha, wasn't aware of those. Thanks.

Twitch appears to have opened that gateway a little bit- at least that I'm aware of, 'talk show' wasn't a category until recently. So that's hopeful!
I'm excited to get a look at STEMtv & give it a shot for Chezy Champs. :)

Sorry about that. The event lost internet for a few minutes. Should be back up now.

FYI, all of these concerns [disabling or offering control over ads, full transcodes, special categorization] are solvable and are things that Twitch takes care of for partners and special events on a regular basis. All totally solvable.
The stream for Chezy has really shined when things are working well but uptime has been wanting. Venue internet can be a struggle for sure.
One thing I miss is being able to watch on my phone or tablet; with the Twitch/YouTube apps this is very easy. But the embedded player is Flash, not HTML5, so I haven't been able to watch on mobile. I haven't tried to grab the manifest and play it back in another video player.

It turns out that streaming 1080p 60fps video while uploading 1080p 60fps video to YouTube was a little much for this network to handle. Chezy Champs has stopped the uploads for now and the stream is back and stable.
Unfortunately, the stream availability would have happened regardless of which streaming service was used.
Guess we can't have everything. :P
I agree that watching streams on the phone and tablet is convenient and important. STEMtv has a meeting tomorrow to work on delivering that via a player that has a mobile SDK. We're in our infancy, but we're working hard to tailor our service to the STEM community.

Sweet. Let me know if you would appreciate some input on the Android side, I know the Twitch Android app inside and out :)

It is also viewable within our development version of the TBA Android app. But that hasn't been released yet due to some bugs. The point is it will be available during the 2016 season.

We were able to add support in the TBA Android app for the Cheesy Champs broadcast, here's the commit (https://github.com/the-blue-alliance/the-blue-alliance-android/commit/04994e0e1131b3e263a1b240ad65fda9fe135607).

Thanks for that. For anyone wanting to avoid Flash on desktop, Safari and Microsoft Edge have native HLS support so using the mobile URL posted above that embeds the playlist in a <video> tag will work on those browsers as well.

Everyone on GameSense had a blast at Chezy Champs this year! Thank you so much to team 254 for inviting us back again this year and for putting on a great event.
We would also like to thank our sponsor, Symbotic for making it possible for us to do what we do.
If you missed it live and want to check out the action, you can see the matches at the Chezy Champs YouTube Page (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKqzB6PVkWvtrGUWl0nv4gQ) and check out the wrap video made by GameSense! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03bKXJVv7q4)

GameSense was even better this year than last (despite the significant handicap provided by Recycle Rush).
I would *love* to see GameSense work with FIRST to produce an "NFL Red Zone" style broadcast of the FRC Championship, covering action across each division over the weekend in a format that casual viewers and hardcore FRC fans alike would enjoy...

Thank you! We learned a lot from last year. The feedback we received from viewers, and the ability to review our previous performance were huge benefits.

This has been my pipe-dream for a few years now, since before we started GameSense. Hopefully, someday :).
