My coach posted this video to our team's Facebook page this morning :ahh: . This isn't directly a game hint but it still will have your mind spinning. Could this mean cannonballs?! . It's a great video and i'd recommend watching it all the way through, but for those who want to get straight to the hint I've started the video in the right place:D : https://youtu.be/xjdzYAg_MlQ?t=1m32s

I don't really notice any hints. What's in the video is what we already know :P. (Unless I'm stupid and missed something)

Well, we now know that there might be balls.

Well, we now know that there might be balls.

Which, according to the pattern, there are supposed to be (specifically, small balls).

Which, according to the pattern, there are supposed to be (specifically, small balls).

To elaborate, here is the last bunch of game pieces:

2008 - Large Diameter Spheres (~40" DIA) covered in rugged fabric
2009 - Non-Sphere Moon Rocks. Maybe kinda Sphere-ish.
2010 - Small Diameter Spheres (Soccer Balls) (~9" DIA)
2011 - Inflatable FIRST logo pieces
2012 - Small Diameter Spheres (Foam Basketballs) (~8" DIA)
2013 - Non-Sphere Frisbees
2014 - Large Diameter Spheres (~24" DIA) covered in rugged fabric
2015 - Non-Sphere Totes
2016 - Theoretically due for some sort of sphere game piece, if pattern continues ...

This pattern even went back further.

2002 - Small Spheres (Though they were only a secondary game piece in the end)
2003 - Non-Sphere Totes
2004 - 2 Types of Balls, both large and small diameter
2005 - Non-Sphere PVC Tetrahedrons
2006 - Small Diameter Spheres
2007 - Non-Sphere Inflatable Inner Tubes

You know what's REALLY sad?

2001: Small Spherical Game Objects (SGOs) AND large SGOs.
2000: Small SGOs.
1999: Non-SGO (torus shape made of fabric, filled with foam peanuts and rimmed with velcro)
1998: Large SGOs.
1997: Non-SGO (inner tube, see 2007 for approximation)
1993-1996: Small SGOs, various.
1992: VERY Small SGO (tennis balls, I believe)

And no, I wasn't watching events before around 1998/1999.

If that doesn't bust the pattern, I don't know what will.

Let's not forget the end of the 2015 game hint video.

"Change is coming"

Perhaps this means the pattern will break. Hmmmmmmm...?

It was fairly clear that this statement was directed towards not having bumpers last year with a divided field. Also being allowed to have a robot encompass multiple parts around the field, and not a single unit.

I don't think he would say that if it wasn't a ball game. IMO it'll be black colored dodgeballs (cannonballs). If this is true, I'm pumped. Projectiles return!

And what does Dean mean, that this is the first year that they've themed the game? Is he saying that Recycle Rush wasn't a themed game?

Green Potato

I think what he means by a theme is that this year will be the first to create a new environment outside the game. While recycle Rush was recycling based, it really didn't create an atmosphere, if you will. For example, last year, very few people dressed up in anything at all recycling-related for the tournaments or even changed pit setup (at least at the regionals we went to).

Wasn't Lunacy (RIP) supposed to be Moon-rover themed or something?
Nobody really ran with it, but it was there for the taking.

Yes, that's what he's saying.

I think they mean like black inflatable playground balls, which would be called "cannonballs" in the game manual. It's not out of the question for sure.

Maybe there will be really small balls like tennis balls or foam shaped rocks.
Of course if its a Monty Python styled game it could mean throwing anything from stuffed rabbits to cows.

Anyone up for a mini trebuchet?

My son would probably not be the only one who would be thrilled if this were true.

From the sounds of it, Dean is trying to create speculation around these game pieces. Well, he sure is accomplishing it.

Anyhow, I do think that we will see some form of spherical-shaped game piece, what we do with it can be anybody's guess.

Connecting it to the "Security Breach" video that gives us barely anything to work off of, Jake says "And these game pieces... I haven't seen these before". From my perspective, he makes it sound like a sarcastic comment, but I may have interpreted that incorrectly. If it is sarcastic, it could mean some form of a sphere for a game piece.

It's clear that Dean states there is a possibility of having some sort of sphere. He flat out says "maybe". It's not out of the question, but this doesn't prove anything, sadly.

It could be anything :P

Which puts us precisely where we were six months ago, but slightly more entertained.

Cannonballs(Dodgeballs) would make sense. with the theme.

I would argue this is not the first themed game though. Most heavy theme ever yes. If recycle rush was not themed pool noodles would not have been called litter.

I was hoping for bowling balls to simulate cannonballs - although field repair between matches could be a challenge.

Field Repair? Throwing bowling balls might cause us to need more human repair

What if he meant there would be some criteria which would decide if the balls would be, or would not be on the field.

If Disney can do for FRC what they did for Star Wars, then I look forward to a really good game this year.

Here : http://archive.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/blog-duck-vine

And as I mentionned earlier this year, this could have been a hint about the theme of the challenge :

One squeaky duck toy = a squeaky duck toy

Dozens of squeaky duck toys = the Visigoths descending on Rome

Visigoths descended on Rome led by Alaric I.
"Alaric is best known for his sack of Rome in 410, which marked a decisive event in the decline of the Roman Empire." (from Wikipedia)

And, as we know now, the theme of this year's challenge is Middle Age...

"In European history, the Middle Ages or Medieval period lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. It began with the collapse of the Western Roman Empire" (from Wikipedia again)
