I'm just a little confused on the wording of the rules regarding defense selection. In 5.5.10, it says:

During the Practice MATCHES, ALLIANCES may select any four (4) DEFENSES from the four (4) groups.
For example, each of the two (2) DEFENSES from groups A and B. Also, OUTER WORKS DEFENSE
positions 2 through 5 are selected by the opposing ALLIANCE, i.e. the Red ALLIANCE selects the Blue
ALLIANCE DEFENSES. This provides each ALLIANCE with a predictable set of DEFENSES on which to
practice.

And then in 5.5.10.2, where it specifies teams choosing choosing defenses, it doesn't specify which teams choose the defenses. And the wording in the example is a little weird because it says The DEFENSE selection process outlined for the Qualification MATCHES will also be employed during Practice MATCHES. which seems to imply that the choosing process is the same?
My assumption is that the team chooses their own defenses (ie. Blue alliance chooses the defenses that red alliance will have to beat), but does it say that or is that just supposed to be implied? (It's entirely possible that it does and I'm not seeing it, but I didn't remember reading anywhere else specifically WHICH alliance chooses which defenses)

This is a good question for Q&A. It makes sense that you pick the defenses that your opponent will have to go through before firing boulders at your castle in qualifying rounds. But practice rounds should be used to practice navigating the defenses.

The selection of defenses is explained more thoroughly in 5.5.10

I refer you to section 5.5.10.2. The answer to your question should be in there.

5.5.10:
the Red ALLIANCE selects the Blue ALLIANCE DEFENSES. This provides each ALLIANCE with a predictable set of DEFENSES on which to practice.

That means your alliance will end up picking which defenses it will have to cross.

"The DEFENSE selection process outlined for the Qualification MATCHES will also be employed during Practice MATCHES."

I believe this is only talking about the process in which teams pick defenses two matches ahead of time and the like, not specifically whose defenses they pick, but I could be wrong.

Yes NShep98, but that's only for practice matches.

Yeah this just means they will employ the use of the Defensive Coordinator in all matches. During actual Qual and Elim matches you have to pick the defenses your opponent has to cross.

Yes NShep98, but that's only for practice matches.

In that case, the only part I see that pertains to this is in the beginning of parts 2,3, and 5

FIRST STRONGHOLD is a medieval tower defender game in which two (2) ALLIANCES of three (3) Teams
each select DEFENSES to fortify their OUTER WORKS before competing simultaneously to score points
while BREACHING the opponent’s OUTER WORKS and CAPTURING the opponent’s TOWER.

Where you select your own defenses.

Where you select your own defenses.

"own defenses" refers to the DEFENSES of your own CASTLE, which the opponent is trying to BREACH/CAPTURE.

That is what I meant to say, yes.

This thread is pretty much answered but if you're still confused head to this thread. Answers the same question. Who Chooses? (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=141243)
