View Full Version : Error when imaging RoboRIO
I've tried reimaging the RoboRIO, but I constantly get this same error message:

I've tried this on two different computers, and over USB and Ethernet, but I always get this message.

Try having BOTH USB and ethernet plugged into the computer when doing this, I know it sounds weird but that has saved my bacon a few times! :p
With this roborio, I also tried updating the firmware. I can't login, as the default username "admin" and blank password doesn't work. Maybe this is related to why the imaging tool also does not work.
Is there a way to reset the login settings, or otherwise format the roborio without requiring login?

I had a similar situation with my imaging tool running Windows 10 and returning that error. I am assuming you are on Windows 10. This could be an mDNS issue. This was my explanation for the network resolution that fixed the both the radio config problem and the error the rio imaging tool was throwing. It was the same error message as yours.

I am having lots of problems this year with my laptops connecting with my radios. There are lots of reboots. It might be some sort of ARP table problem or cached IP addresses somewhere. Power off your laptops and rio and start clean.

I made sure all the sharing settings were good, and it still doesn't work.
Also uninstalled antivirus and turned off all firewalls. Tried booting into safe mode. Nevertheless, it's always the same result.

Capitalize the first letter of Admin, not lower case.
But I'd also suggest asking the NI Support desk. That's what they're there for.

I may have missed it, but is this win10? have you powered down completely? There is another software NI has called NIMax. They may ask you to install NIMax as an alternate means of installing to the rio. One last question can u see the MAC address of the rio in the installer?
Call NI Technical Support
NI Technical Support is here for those tricky questions and hard-to-troubleshoot issues. Call us Monday through Friday, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. CST. You can also email us through the link below.

Yes, it's win10, though I've also tried it on a win7 computer with the same results.
I can see the MAC address of the rio, and I can communicate with it normally from the driver station.
Pretty sure the issue is just that the login username/password was somehow changed, and it needs to be reset.
I suppose I'll give NI support a call tomorrow night.
Are you upgrading the firmware or the image?
There are two upgrades that have to happen. I think you need to do the firmware first. Instructions are here: http://wpilib.screenstepslive.com/s/4485/m/13503/l/273817-updating-your-roborio-firmware
Firmware is via the web interface. The image file is via the NI tool. I would guess that trying to put the latest image on there without the latest firmware could cause issues.

I've tried doing both, and neither have worked

If you can't login to the roboRIO as Admin through the browser interface, then things aren't going to work.
Other apps depend on that to get admin privileges on the roboRIO.
Did you get your RoboRIO upgraded?
Yes, we got it working.
We called NI technical support and obtained a file to wipe the RoboRIO and start fresh.
Doing that reset the password to the default, so I was able to log in and install firmware/image the rio.

We had similar problems, and were ready to punt until we could call NI on Monday. Then I remembered NIMax. Fell back to it today and successfully got the brain surgery done.
NIMax apparently is not in the LabView tools installation, but is in the LabView distribution. Had me thoroughly confused why it was on my personal machine, but not on the team laptops. Then remembered I was resisting the Java Borg and installed LabView on my machine as a backup.
