Mounting encoders to WCP SS Gearbox

Just wondering if anyone has any experience mounting an encoder to the WCP SS gearbox. (http://www.wcproducts.net/wcp-ss-gearbox) I'd like to see if there is an elegant solution to this before we start modifying anything.

We elegantly modified ours.

Edit: We drilled and tapped holes to mount an encoder mount pad (http://www.andymark.com/spacer-p/am-0208.htm) to the motor mount side of the gearbox. Seems to fit nicely without compromising the gearbox function at all.

Mounting US Digital S4s or Grayhills are really easy. You can just press the encoder into the hole that already exists in the gearbox shaft, maybe with a little superglue, and then just use the wiring to stop it from rotating.

Mounting the USDigital E4Ps is harder however. When we did it in 2014, we 3d printed a mount for the encoder that clipped to the gearbox, and then glued a piece of shaft to the axle to use for driving the disk. However, I've seen many times where the E4Ps get assembled incorrectly, so I would highly suggest getting USDigital S4s or Grayhills. S4s are harder to buy, however Grayhill 63Rs can be purchases straight through Digikey here http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?mpart=63R256&vendor=136

We're trying out the new AndyMark CIMcoders (http://www.andymark.com/encoder-p/am-3314.htm) this year.

This makes the CIM output shaft just long enough to fit the pinion gear on, but very difficult to add a retaining clip. We sawed the pinion in half and it works fine.

Yup, in 2015 we used the WCP SS gearboxes and mounted Grayhill encoders with some zip ties and wire. Super simple. not elegant, but it stayed in and did the job.
