I'm not really following the whole "hide the design" thing. Have you come up with a strategically revolutionary design that you don't want other teams copying? Just for reference, it's actually hard to come by good pictures of mechanisms like this that detail how people have put them together. The idea, I think, is fairly well known.

its a teaser we are going to share the whole thing when it is actually done. we will have detailed pics and videos so other teams can learn from it. It is a very well machined prototype that we hope can effect the shorter bots out there and maybe they too can use the design for inspiration.

For a tape measure lifting device the Stanley fat max would be the best according to our research. It is a nice compact way of lifting.

I like the teaser. I think redacted pictures are more than welcome on CD. It's getting your team out there without having to fully reveal your plans. With that said, I'm all for open source robots. I'd also love to learn more about how this mechanism works.

Those were in the first iteration of prototyping we actually now are using ones that are a little bigger and hug the 1-1/4" tape measure better

we have that tape measure as well as a milwaukee heavy duty tape measure that is nylon coated so far the best in our opinion is the Milwaukee one just cause of the grip and hardly any bend in it when we extend it

Stanley and DEWALT are the same company. While there are slight differences, my experience is that they are using he same FATMAX core on the DEWALT tape measures. There is most definitely a difference between tape measures designed for contractors and those sold at harbor freight but in the end each team should do their own testing.

I kind of just assumed the chain but I feel like it makes sense. to bet the measuring tape on both sides to move without slipping.

Well in the final design the gearbox has an outside gear reduction that runs the chain to power both of the guide wheels

I just got to thinking, by now all teams should have their ideas pretty much solidified and that releasing full hints now won't do much good because teams that would want to steal your ideas would only have like a week to CAD and machine and assemble your idea. Right?
