I bought 4 CUI encoders at Digikey, with axial connections (AMT103-V). Recently, the CAD team informed me that we need 2 axial and 2 radial. Being in Chile and 12 days from stop build day, I can't order new ones, especially with the very expensive shipping cost to Chile.
So has anyone here accidentally bought the wrong encoder and modified the pins with success?

You could solder wires directly to the pins of the encoder. We've done that before when we didn't have the connector.

I always use a clip-on heat sink (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/11RhDgBsfkL.jpg) when I do that. In a pinch, a large alligator clip is better than nothing.
Make sure to clip the heat sink between the encoder and the solder joint.
