Now it's time to prototype some grappling hooks.

Is that grappling hook legal? I thought I remembered something last year about grappling hook can-burglars not being allowed.

Is this safe??? Projectile robot components? My team decided against it only because we didn't want to run into Robot Inspectors that wouldn't let us play due to safety concerns. Everyone we talked to said it wouldn't pass. Kinda miffed if we coulda gone with it all along.

Its up to 118 to prove to the LRI at each event that it is safe.

It does not state anywhere in the rules that you can't have a projectile.

Woah guys. Way to go. I had a notification pop up when it was released and I had a beautiful surprise after school, so thank you!

Another amazing lo-bar robot that combines speed with accurate shooting. Also, the most creative solution to hanging I've seen (and I've seen A LOT). I will be paying attention to how this robot does, but I think we have yet another top tier robot from a top tier team.

By that logic going over the rock wall would make many robots illegal. Actually, all climbs would be illegal. Their bumpers are not rising compared to the bottom of their wheels.

R22 BUMPERS must be located entirely within the BUMPER ZONE, which is the volume contained
between two virtual horizontal planes, 4 in. above the floor and 12 in. above the floor, in reference
to the ROBOT standing normally on a flat floor. BUMPERS do not have to be parallel to the floor.

Nope. It fits perfectly within the 15 in restriction (they are lifting from their COM), and there is no height limit. All good there.
Only question I have is the projectile nature of it.

Look at the blue box added in Team Update 1. If the robot is virtually translated into a flat floor, their orientation would not put the wheels on the floor and the bumpers do not appear to be within 15" of the lowest point on the robot.

The orientation of the robot at any given time has no relevance to the rule.

This measurement is intended to be made as if the ROBOT is resting
on a flat floor

Meaning unless they have some sort of secret mechanism that keeps the robot in that orientation while sitting on a flat floor, which I highly doubt they do, they are fine according to bumper rules.

I seem to remember another mechanism of 118s that was deemed illegal in the past. I suspect this one will be OK.

I think what Michael is thinking of isn't the bumper rules, but the 15" extension rule, which made a lot of single joint rotary climbers illegal. 118's harpoon however, clearly never extends more than 15" past the bumpers, so there's no reason for concern.

Add me to the "stunned" list on that reveal. An amazing robot.

But about the 34'th time watching it, I'm seeing that WALL OF BLUE BANNERS and the space you are playing in.

Can you post a few words on where that is? That has got to be the nicest practice space I've ever seen. At the 0:43 second mark there are some pretty neat vehicles in the background.

May I direct you to the image under g18 in this version (https://firstfrc.blob.core.windows.net/frc2016manuals/GameManual/FRC-2016-game-manual-03.pdf) of the rules (the newest)

The concern is that the rotation of their robot goes far enough from horizontal that their hook is outside 15" the (newly rotated) frame perimeter.

I would wager a team of 118s caliber has tested try robot enough to feel confident in their implementation.

IIRC, Team 118's workspace is in the Staging Zone of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston, right beside the full-size mockup of the International Space Station. When I was there over the summer, there was a full-size FRC Practice Field set up there, with the blue banners in a huge circle around it.

I was freaking out during the tour because I didn't know this beforehand, and the tour guide had no idea what I was freaking out about.

Yeah it's in Building 9 at Johnson Space Center. They moved their last season. You can see some more of it in their 2015 reveal video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-fA0YxxvnU) as well, along with the NASA Robonaut hanging out. It is an awesome place to visit and practice with them.

I'm really confused on the specific rules, but aren't grappling hooks not allowed?

When confused by the rules its often best to read through them again and see if you can find a specific rule that would outlaw something. In this case no there is not specific rule that makes this climb illegal. Their our general safety rules and rules about grappling other robots but if 118 takes measures to ensure the safety of the field and all people around the field it should be ruled legal.

I see, I read the rules and it just seemed unclear weather or not grappling could be used to climb. It does look safe, but it does say no grappling with exceptions to special field elements I think. That's what confused me. Otherwise super genius idea

What we did on our robot is used the pistons to pull the springs back and then used a latch system to hold it down and then primed the cylinders and release the latch. I am not sure what they are doing but it might be something like that.

It was AWESOME to see the one time Endeavour deployed this mechanism in a match. If it had not been made illegal, we would have seen them driving along the edge of the bridges to fine tune the balance (as told to me by one of their mentors).
