With the first alliance selections of 2016 a few matches away, it's time for the CD community to start our annual record keeping.

FIRST has improved the layout and information available on their event results pages, but declines are not tracked and it's nice to have a backup source if FMS data is not available. Use this thread to post the full alliance selection results from each competition, noting the order of invitation and any declines.

Previous years' threads: 2010 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83814), 2011 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93246), 2012 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104125), 2013 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114555), 2014 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127346), 2015 (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135275)

Why did 3021 decline? Where they not playing the ranking game during quals? And how did 5805 rank so highly and get defeated by the number 8 alliance? :ahh:

It seems like 3021 thought they would do better forming their own alliance, which can happen. It's also part of the meta-game - the game you play in eliminations is slightly different than the game played in quals. A robot good in one may not be good in the other.

I remember an event in 2009 where a rookie seeded #1 the event we were at, and picked 4 other alliance captains, and was declined each time. They didn't last through QF, but had the other effect that those captains couldn't pick each other either. (found it) (http://www.thebluealliance.com/event/2009wa#rankings)

In fact, this was how 1678 largely won Curie in 2013. They were denied 4 times as #1 seed before 148 accepted (who was 9th). By forcing these robots to decline, they were able to keep 1310 (5th), 2056 (4th), 1717 (6th), and 359 (7th) from potentially pairing up with each other. None of those captains made it out of semifinals.

I don't remember there being too much of a fuss back then, because well... quite frankly, it was a brilliant move. 1678 saw the chance and took it. It helps that 1678 rightfully outplayed all the other alliances.

Why did 3021 decline? Where they not playing the ranking game during quals?
We declined because we saw the opportunity to pick teams that work together better. We had worked with both Paradox (4th opr #2102) and coconuts (5th opr #2486) during qualifications. In our last qual. Match we captured the tower with coconuts and knew that we could do it during eliminations. Many mentors and students questioned our strategy but it paid off with a win.
Thanks to teams 2102 and 2486 for not following our example of declining.

5970, VIKbotics, went 11-1 in their quals, best at the event if you are wondering.

4082, Ranching Robots, broke in the 1st QF, and 4495, the Tigers, really stepped up as a backup, helping them clench the win.

And how did 5805 rank so highly and get defeated by the number 8 alliance? :ahh:

Pretty much everything that could go wrong went wrong in the QF for us. We got ran over by our teammate and it hit one of our pipes and so we couldn't scale, we had our first auto failure and got caught under the low bar, we couldn't cycle balls fast enough, 3882's aiming cam broke in the second round... so much went wrong for us.

Actually coming from being on #8 alliance this is my view. We were pretty much equal breacher to the rookie all star #1 ranked bot but way more versatile. We were partnered with a very efficient speedy crossing LG capable captain and an excellent HG shooter..we can pop in low goals and feed bots plus scale. We were the most well rounded bot in the eliminations and we had an awesome HG shooter and Awesome LG shooter by choice...that is a very tough combo to beat as your #1 alliance found out.

Had our shooter not jammed in SF the results would have been different there too. We had stuck issue in QF too but manage to overcome and the scale well that's two more HG's.

Alliance 1 was flawed (no disrespect at all) due to the fact the captain was "only" an awesome rookie breacher and you had no reliable HG shooters besides 3882 or scalers..that is why you lost. Just sayin'

You put both of our alliances on the field with no mechanical issues an we still will beat you most games due to the higher scoring ceiling of our alliance make-up.

In a perfect game for each alliance

Both teams breach+10.... both teams ferry balls to accurate shooters , both teams capture. BUT we scale.

3882 similar to our reliable HG 812 in the playoffs but 812 got fed more (I don't think 812 missed)
We were similar to the #1 seed and can shoot LG and/or feed and scale= 2 HG
Your were not as efficient as out alliance captain who could pop in LGs' consistently

Do the math and you will see I am correct, its no mystery why we won 2-0 if you compare bot for bot. We each had mechanical challenges.

Believe 3882 was on my HG pick list if we were alliance captain I think (as I told their team earlier) I had 3882 at 1 and agency at 2 and 812 at 3/4 with warlords

The real reason the #8 alliance won is we were ranked artificially low because we did not get credited for two RP in quals we should have been ranked about 11 instead of 19 so alliance 8 essentially got a #7-8ish captain level first choice by me talking to them them ahead of time and telling them they needed to pick us to have their best chance of going to St Louis at pick 8 and with the very next pic an awesome HG shooter my scouts identified..it worked beautifully.

That's the real reason why 8 beat 1 in two games. Comes down to us losing 2 RP making us available to alliance 8 why #1 lost in two straight games decisively which seems to never happen. 8 is not supposed to beat 1...the reason is RP's were not scored correctly skewing some rankings down and others artificially up. That is why top seeds got beat bad scoring in qualifications for some teams.

Hope week 2 goes better in terms of our shooter reliability/hardening and field crew accurate scoring to not skew rankings. I want us to be a captain in an amazingly tough world class field (that has not played yet) 812 and us have lots of practice and SF playoff experience and plans to compete ultra strong in CV from match 1 on. 585 should also improve also having a regional under their belt .Will be interesting in CV with the teams from SD coming to town. Bring it on can't wait to see what CV teams cooked up, I expect the best from many teams there.

Hate to break it to you but it was 234 that declined 435. 4290 didn't decline anyone. I was the one on the field who declined to 435 so I think I remember. ;)

Sorry about that, I misread the information someone sent me. It's fixed now.

Just curious, was any alliance captain planning on picking 3072 before we got moved up to captains ourselves? I couldn't tell whether to be bummed or grateful to be moved up, because I wasn't sure if anyone would pick us if we weren't captains.

True. During alliance selections for a second (before 1732 had been picked by the number 8 alliance) I thought 93 and 2169 would pick 1732 to recreate their alliance from Wisconsin last year... too bad though.

Edited for results.
1665 came in during our second semifinal match to replace 229, who was having drivetrain issues. They then proceeded to play some incredible defense, which is a huge part of the reason we got to finals.

All the robots in the finals, including backups, qualified for champs via Wildcards.

Yes. Then 1279 was picked. They could have accepted but then it would have burned the backup coupon. They should get the gp or team spirit award or some mention at least

As someone from 587 we did decline 4290 because they were 2nd seed and with 24 teams would have a weaker team because of the third pick. We went on to be in an alliance with yeti and Kai orbus and went to semi finials (would have gone to finals if we didn't lose coms on the field)

Well, they had told us that they were going to decline us. We used that to our own strategic advantage and chose them so Skunk Works 1983, would not pick them. It was a great competition!

TBA show you losing 2/2 SF matches. You lose com both matches? I would have said something to the ref and/or used a time-out to diagnose the problem after the first failure.

There was a lot of secrecy between the teams, and we let them know before alliance selection that they would be our first pick and they said they would decline. Then we had other teams telling us that Skunk Works 1983, would be choosing them for second pick and we decided to use that to our advantage. I also do believe that they may have wanted to be captains but we didn't want to take the chance of them being on Skunk Works alliance.

I kind of wish there was a Central Washington District Event thread to discuss this. It was a great event! Everyone was on the edge of their seats as to what the final rankings would be.

The alliance selections were a classic example of "scorched earth", where the final top 8 rankings did not match most people's pick lists.

Most teams had 1983, 4450, and 1318 as the top 3 teams on their pick lists. When 3711 seeded first, they knew that 1983 and 4450 would decline them. I haven't seen 1983 and 4450's pick lists, but it's possible 3711 wasn't high enough on their lists to justify accepting an invitation from them. Thus, 3711 did the smart thing. They chose 4450 first, had them decline, and then chose 1318 who was outside the top 8. This broke up any combinations of 1983, 4450, and 1318.

I am not sure why the #3 alliance of 4450, 2147, and 4495 lost in the quarterfinal rounds, but it's possible the alliance just didn't gel well enough. Some alliances are still working out the kinks in quarters. I didn't get to watch the matches because my team was also playing in quarters. Either way, 4450 has a very, very good robot.

Congrats to 3711, 1318, and 2926 for making the final rounds (and eliminating us), and 1983, 4061, and 2149 for an absolutely dominant performance at CWU!

Since the stream was down, I heard all of this through texts from a friend at the event. So, I don't know of any declines.

That was in the first semis, and only on 1432. I am wondering about the whole team yellow card in the first QF match. The YT video has had its sound muted, so im unable to look there.

A yellow card was handed to our alliance in semis for a robot ramming into the wall and knocking out some of the lights.

I believe contact inside the frame perimeter. 1501 was playing defense on 1024. The scuffle broke the pneumatic fitting in 1024 rendering their pneumatics dead.

Does anyone know why 1024 had radio issues that last match? My assumption was that their radio was where 1501 was up on them and that damaged it, but I'm not sure where 1024's radio is located and that was pure assumption. Or was it just a random FMS thing that just happens every once in a while to random team? Thanks.

Alliance 2 got a yellow card in first match (unsure why) and in their first Semifinal match 1432 got a yellow card (G6) DQing that match.

Something happened at 54 seconds left in the match that shows the Head Ref calling a foul on Red. Unfortunately, the camera did not show that side of the field.

However, a few seconds later, it does show the Human Player in the Spy Box making motions that looks like he might be extending in to the field. For the rest of the game, it seems like the Head Ref is watching the HP like a hawk. That would be a G4 Foul where "violations of this rule are likely to escalate to Yellow or Red Cars rapidly". Looks like the HP did it a lot, thus resulting in a quick escalation.

Assuming that was the foul, without the foul, Red would have won the match.

The Yellow card in match 1 was assigned for a robot slamming into the alliance wall and knocking out power to some of the field lights. The yellow card in semi's 1 was assigned before the match for a member of one of the drive teams stepping over the guard rail to get on the field. Since we already had a yellow, it got upgraded to a red.

We did challenge but the ruling was kept- we understand why and are very happy with our playing. But they'res always that one little thing! Haha you win some you lose some I guess!

That plus 3506 had a wire on the roborio get knocked loose going over the rock wall in F-1. We went over one defense and lost comms and we would have won that match had that not happened. We simply did not have the best of luck during the Asheville event and we certainly had the potential to win it if all went well because our alliance with 587 and 3971 had the highest scoring potential for that side of the bracket. All did not go well but we tried our best.

Sadly 10 "Graciously accepts" with 1 "Bravely accepts", others were "Gratefully".
Number in ( ) was an original ranking of the top 8 seeds, big pulls from the top. Technically 5404 in the third seed was the new 8th captain because of the two prior top selection.

Final score was a tie at 145, so the tie breaker rules took place. They had to go to scored auto points to break the tie.

High score for quals was 134, high score for elmins was 184.

It seems like, as the competition season goes on, it is less the 1,2,3,4 alliances in semis, and 1,2 in finals, but rather a more even spread of the alliances in ability. At Hartford, 3 of the 4 QF matches were upsets.

I'm going to say that part of the reason is good defense is really shutting down some top shooters, and the best defense are the first second picks. Good defense bots, at least the events I have been to, can effectively slow shooters wayyyy down.

I should rephrase. That was the first time I had seen a 8 seed win in person. I know that 8 seeds have won before, but I haven't witnessed it previously.

Any reason why it shows a score of 0 for your alliance in the second Newton Finals?

Wow this was over a month ago and I don't know if you'll see this, but we declined due to drivetrain issues as well.
