View Full Version : Small Wheel Club 4" or smaller
I have seen a couple of robots with some pretty tiny wheels I was wondering if any one has any pictures. This is a safe place do not be ashamed to show off your tiny wheels.;) ;)

Team 346 is running 4 inch high traction wheels this year. Fortunately, they seem to be holding up through competition.

But.... Why?
But.... Why?
You can't see it from that picture but if you look at this (http://www.robohawks346.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/IMG_1065.jpg) picture from their website you can see they have tank treads slightly above the wheels. The treads let them get over the defenses, but the wheels make turning a lot easier.

But.... Why?
because smaller wheels will be stronger than larger ones. Small wheels require less gear reduction and can lead to a higher efficiency drive train. Smaller wheels allow you to have a lower center of gravity. Smaller wheels let you move your contact points further forward and backwards making the robot more stable. Smaller wheels are lighter.
Generally the smallest wheels that give you the performance you need are typically better.

I'm not on team 16, but I'm fairly certain they use 4" wheels on their swerve and traction drive.

Team 1533 has four 3.25" wheels on the swerve...and I know this may not count, but there are twelve total 3" pulley wheels on Rhino tracks.
