Not that I'm in the Michigan Districts, but any idea on whether the time for the Octofinals are tacked on to the normal schedule or did they cut out a round of Qualifications?

Last year they just added them in: http://www.thebluealliance.com/event/2015micmp

Remember MI CMP has 2 fields to play on. So it isn't that much extra time.

(I pretty sure they did)

Wow, I have no idea how I missed that happening last year.

Last year FiM did an excellent job, hats off to organizers and volunteers. The matches went without any hick ups. For that matter most of FiM district events go smoothly, exception is probably the first with, minor issues with FMS at some events.

Can we all just have a slow clap for the MONTH that it took FIRST to update the drawings for the low bar flap material?

I still have no idea who in FIRST could possibly have come up with the name Octofinals. Why not Eighth Finals? I guess that would make too much sense

With two fields the Octo-Finals took up as much time as the normal Quarter-Finals.

After the Octo-Finals we moved to one field to finish the event. Personally I rather of seen the first two rounds played on two fields and the Semis and Finals played on one field.

The prefix "Octo-" means 8 (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/octo-). So it would go Octofinals, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, then Finals. Makes snese to me.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-elimination_tournament#Nomenclature

The above article gives some notes about the nomenclature of the rounds in an elimination tournament. As you can see, "Octofinals" is used by the North American Debating Championship.

What's really great is that they use "Double-octofinals" or "Decimosextofinals" for the round of 32 and "Triple-" or "Quadruple-Octofinals" after that.

Maybe the FIRST nomenclature person was on a debate team?

I believe they just started referring to them as the "octofinals" unofficially last year, and it seems like the name stuck.
