I was waiting to see how many teams will have a two ball auto at champs! That looks awesome!

Assuming this is the only one they've added, and haven't taken any others out, this would be 28. Can't say I've ever actually tallied up how many they've used though...

Interesting concept to throw out the loaded ball and get the one off the line. Makes the thrown out ball closer, making the timing right on. Can't wait to watch you in St Louis.:]

Impressive work, guys! I expected this to be something you were working on, and glad to see you were able to succeed. Hope divisions are kind and we can finally get that chance to share the same side of the glass. Either way, looking forward to seeing you again in St. Louis!

I assumed it was more so another team couldn't steal the second ball away as easily.
I'd like to see IRI allow shooting from the neutral zone but only during autonomous. Then we could see >2 boulder autonomous and boulder wars.
There is a MN team that already has an auto for this. #7ballauto? :D

I think the logic is that intaking the dropped ball is way easier that legally intaking the ball on the midline (after the first shot).

I don't think I've seen a single team line up their robot in front of their opponent's secret passage, nor have I seen any counter-autonomous modes just to stop that one ball from being scored. After all, the crossing points they lose is equal to the points they deny in the two ball auto routine anyway. It is definitely done this way to require less accuracy and less chance of a penalty after the first ball is scored.

This is definitely the reason all two-ball teams drop their starting ball to score the midline ball first.

Tall robots with high powered turrets and fast intakes and ball transportation from intake -> shooter would be perfect for this. And it would make defense selection interesting :D

Is it simply that ball ends up in nearly the same place every time, or is it using some sort of shape-tracking software to locate the ball? I assume, based on the straight path of the robot, that it is the former, but I wanted to be certain. Good job guys, and keep up the great work!

Yes, the ball drop and roll against the wall is very consistent in where it comes to a stop. Ours usually roll to a stop within an area about 18 inches square.

That's very interesting! I have seen the other previews of two ball autos (254, 1678, etc) and they all seem to be similar. I am honestly very excited to see these face off at the championships and I believe you guys are up there with the best of them! Great job and good luck!

Sweet auto! I'm impressed. I've always admired the bots 1986 makes ever since I noticed them at newton in 2013. I'm hoping we end up in the same division this year. See you guys at worlds regardless.

30 psi in the dropped center 4 and 20 psi in the corners.

It could just be because of the perspective of the video but it looks like your pickup roller enters "the volume above the midline" when you pickup the ball. Wouldn't this draw a foul based on G13?
G13 During AUTO, ROBOTS may not enter the volume above the MIDLINE.
Violation: FOUL. If contact is made with an opponent ROBOT beyond the MIDLINE (either direct contact or transitive contact through a BOULDER), an additional FOUL is assessed and the opponent ROBOT is immediately awarded the CROSSING of the closest DEFENSE from the point of contact.

It's probably the perspective, since it's shot at an angle towards the midline. They, and all the other 2 balls, come incredibly close, but I'm sure all of the teams are well aware that they can't cross the midline.

We have about 3/8" of tolerance between being too far away to grip the edge of the ball and being over the line. Since the intake is pneumatically actuated the drive team can force it to the down position temporarily during set-up to make sure they are in that zone. We checked the line with a right angle tool when designing the auto routine to make sure we were clear. The drivers are familiar enough with it now to eyeball it accurately.
It is certainly close to the line and the movement happens quickly. I don't envy the referee who has to consider the legality in the heat of the moment, and we would love the opportunity to flex the intake down during the pre-match set-up to any curious ref.
One of the easier ways to judge is to picture a 1" stripe on the crown of the ball and see if the intake encroaches on that stripe. If the word FIRST that is printed on each ball is placed at the top in line with the center stripe it is even easier to judge.
