Curie 2014 may have been a little more stacked, but considering how depth is lowered with twice as many divisions, Newton 2016 will definitely be a stacked division to watch.
As the driver for team #103 and it being my first year as driver, I am honored to be in a division with such great teams. Wish the best of luck to all and hopefully we will see a Newton team win Einstein:yikes:

I'd like to offer some friendly advice to everyone in Newton: you do not want 1676 playing defense against you. In addition to being a solid low goal bot, their defense and driving quality is scary. Their defense helped 1257 win Mount Olive from the #7 spot, and helped the #7 alliance defeat us (the #1 alliance) at Bridgewater-Raritan. Watch the finals for either event, and you'll see what I mean.

The "Full Metal Jackets" arrived tonight. We drove through a crazy thunderstorm in central Missouri, hope tomorrow is better. Luckily our robot "Mittens" is sitting in her tiny crate at the dome. If you want scouting data on 1296, check here: http://www.rockwallrobotics.com/robot.html. (http://www.rockwallrobotics.com/robot.html) Mittens has evolved a bit since Palmetto and Dallas.

Team 4276, the Surf City Vikings from Huntington Beach, CA is incredibly excited to be part of the Newton Division this year! Here's to great matches in the days ahead!
It looks like the preliminary schedule (https://firstfrc.blob.core.windows.net/frc2016manuals/Championship/Schedule_Newton.pdf) is now official (http://frc-events.firstinspires.org/2016/NEWTON/qualifications).
Wow this division really is stacked. :ahh: This will be an epic set of matches with so many teams against each other and paired with each other. I really can't wait to see match #111 (no offense Wildstang).....in that match you have 179+254 versus 16+5172. Don't let the high number fool you, team #5172 is the real deal. This won't be an epic high scoring match because I expect to see 229 and 2035 playing a lot of D but it will be a match that decides the top 4 seeds IMO. I wouldn't be surprised if 5172 is ranked 1st coming into this match.
Good luck to all the teams and congratulations on a great season and a terrific game.

@Hallry, will 1676 be posting videos today?
That depends, do you want to pay the $14.99/night for me to have wifi at the hotel (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/fact-sheet/travel/stlsa-renaissance-st-louis-airport-hotel/)? Thanks, Marriott.
But in reality, I am not flying into STL until later tonight. 1676 has been recording full-field footage today (with a few hiccups it sounds like - something about our camera shocking its user?), and once I get in I'll try to work out something to see if today's footage can be uploaded tonight. If not, it'll be up ASAP tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

Update: Just checked in to my hotel. Today's footage won't be uploaded tonight unfortunately. However, I believe we got the WiFi issue sorted out, so today's and tomorrow's footage will be uploaded tomorrow night.
I have most (missing maybe 10 matches which were recorded on a different SD card) of 1676's full-field footage through lunch today on my computer. If you would like a copy, it's about 50 GB, so bring an appropriate SD card and PM me so we can meet up.
Of course, all of our footage will be uploaded onto our YouTube channel tonight.

I think the scary thing with the Newton Division is that 125, 16, and 3476 will be 2nd picks on one of those alliances or on all three alliances. My prediction is 16 and 3476 will be picked up by either 7th, 6th, 5th, or 4th seed and then the top 3 will have a chance to get 125.

Maybe I'm missing something, but 118s play seems to be a little lower in quality than I've seen in the past. I think 179 could be picked by 1519 and we'll see a bloody shootout like in Q61, just on both sides of the court.

I watched 118 in their last match today and they looked lost in the opponent's courtyard. I don't know if it was congestion or what (they had them, their 2 partners and a defender there), but they were missing shots all over the place.

The 217-3467-4678-188 alliance faced the toughest playoff schedule of any of the Einstein alliances by far. There's no way they could haven beaten all of those powerhouse alliances solely on good luck. They knocked out SIX robots on Looking Forward's Top25! And I'm perfectly willing to believe that they can knock out some more. Far from being a dark horse, I'd say they're one of the favorites!

I think whatever Alliance made it out of Newton was probably going into Einstein with a target painted on their back since last Friday.
Before today, all four robots on the winning alliance had only one event win between them. Now they have a decent shot at winning on Einstein.

Bad luck? They lost. It's that simple. It's not like there were random number generators determining the scores.
217-3476-4678-188 beat the #1, #2, and #3 seeds in Newton. Clearly the #7 alliance just got lucky. What a shame. /s

Looking back at the matches, I think you are right. The ability for this alliance to cycle boulders very quickly and double hang is what makes them so good. They are now my favorites on Einstein. It is funny that the alliance with 2 tall bots is probably the best alliance on Einstein. Shout-out to 217 on returning to Einstein where they belong. I also would like to note that 3476 is a powerhouse, in just 6 years they have been to Einstein now 3 times.

I didn't say that the #7 alliance got lucky. I was just saying that 708 falling over in match 1 was bad luck for the #1 alliance. The #7 alliance deserves to be on Einstein. Before you guys jump to conclusions on what I said please read and understand what I wrote.
What was the reason for the DQ in the semi finals?

I have to say, I'm really impressed with 217. Going from being the second pick of the sixteenth seed in MSC to being the seventh seeded alliance captain that bests some of the greatest robots this year is not easy. Congrats to them, and to 3476, 4678, and 188! Well done!

Thank you very much, that means a lot. We had some rough tournaments at the start of the year but things finally came together for us on Newton. We had an absolutely fantastic alliance and finally managed to play near our best. It was a great feeling.

By our list (weighing things like average boulders, max boulders, hang points, and auto points, as well as driving ability/subjectivity) they were easily a top 8 pick at MSC if not higher. I firmly stand by what I've said to a few people in that they were one of the more slept on teams this year.
Watching them and the rest of their alliance play on Einstein and hang right there with an alliance that had as good a shot at a world championship, in my opinion, as anyone was very impressive.
Thanks, that had a wacky title on it, so I missed what it was about.

Almost all of 1676's Newton full-field footage is now uploaded and can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPUJJPXRAlER7kJVE9S9R14DZnbqgem-I. The only videos missing are those of Qualification Matches 8 and 11-24, but I believe most of those were hastily recorded elsewhere while our camera temporarily went berserk. The Newton-Hopper Awards Ceremony and Newton Alliance Selections can also be found in that playlist, and all of our Einstein full-field footage and videos of the Opening Ceremonies and Closing Awards Ceremonies can be found in our Einstein playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPUJJPXRAlET2fWoEdiFuMKI-pN-1gaSn. Being on the winning alliance for Newton was a fabulous experience. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect to be on the winning alliance of such a high-caliber division. Team 4678 is very grateful to teams 217, 3476 and 188 for being our partners in this wonderful experience.
Being the 3rd member of the alliance, we were very curious how well we contributed to the level of scoring our alliance was able to achieve. We know that it's usually the top 2 teams that are responsible for the majority of the points scored in a match. We suspected that might have been a bit different with our alliance and the analysis of the video footage would suggest that is how we managed to succeed on the Newton field.
We may have gotten a few things wrong in our analysis of the video footage but we think we got it pretty close. Have a look at the spreadsheet for the details. It turns out 217, 3476 and 4678 were practically equal. Each team contributed an average of very close to 60 points per game not including the breach and capture points.

The World Champion alliance will come from Newton.
Or there will be so much brutal play internally whoever comes out won't have the gas to get through Einstein

Or there will be so much brutal play internally whoever comes out won't have the gas to get through Einstein5499 played great shut-down D against several of the higher-OPR teams during Newton quals, as did 48. I was not surprised at all to see 5150 pick 48. I was surprised that no one picked 5499.

We want to thank 217 for picking us as the 7th alliance captain!
We also want to thank 4678 and 188 for their continuous push in each and every match.
All of us were great shooters and contributed the same amount practically every match. And hey, we had 2 tall bots on our alliance... so what's that about people thinking tall bots were the wrong move?
Thank you to all the teams in Newton, it was an honor to play against all of you!
