Looking to attend college in the Fall?

My name is John Vielkind-Neun and I'm a Sophomore at Clarkson University. It seems like not many FIRSTers outside of New England know about our fine institution, so I just wanted to share it. Clarkson University is located in Potsdam, NY (upstate). It is a top notch school, with a strong academic program and school of engineering.

The best part is, Clarkson U is a FIRST school! That's right folks, Team 229 - Division by Zero is one of Clarkson's award winning SPEED teams (Student Projects for Engineering Experience and Design). These SPEED teams are really what makes Clarkson stand out from other engineering schools. They are designed as multidisciplinary design projects, where people of all different majors and ages come together to cooperatively complete a project. There are several such teams, like: Mini-Baja, Mini-Indy, SolarCar, Concrete Canoe, Steel & Timber Bridge, Zero emission snowmobile, and FIRST Robotics.

These teams are all representative of Clarkson as a whole. The University is really one big community. Everyone is very friendly, and polite. There is little or no competition among students for grades, everyone works together to succeed. Clarkson is also a strong supporter of group, and project based learning.

All of my experiences up here have been great so far. All my proffessors have been extremely accomodating and friendly. The weather is a little cold (I won't lie, it's cold) but the campus is beautiful.

We also offer scholarships to HS FIRST participants!
The application will be provided in each team's FIRST competition documentation, and can also be downloaded here--> http://www.clarkson.edu/admission/firstscholarship.doc

I know this sounds like a sales pitch, but I have just been extremely happy so far up here. No, admissions didn't put me up to this :p . I hope everyone at least takes a look, because while Clarkson isn't the perfect fit for everyone, it is definitely worth a glance. I have met several people who found out about Clarkson as HSers in the FIRST program, and have since come up here and loved it. Check us out!

The admissions page can be found here --->
http://www.clarkson.edu/admission/

A telling statistic about our school is that almost every alum who graduates is happy with the time they spent here. It sounds like a cliche, but it really is a friendly, family like atmosphere.

Thanks,

Kristina

haha, can we all make pitches for our schools now? GO UCLA...we may not be a FIRST school but we compensate in so many ways :) Plus I'm here, need I say more. lol

There are more girls than guys and Playboy ranked UCLA as having the 3rd hottest girls. But of course, that's not why you should pick this school! Just talk to me and I'll give you the whole info bit on UCLA and make y'all Bruins!

Freshman class ratio for Clarkson is 2:3, not too shabby! Clarkson is really a great school, and the FIRST scholarship here is nice (I should know I won one, even though I'm not on the FIRST website for it...). All your lectures have proffesors and you work with TA's once a week to go over questions from class and homework. I absolutely love it up here in Potsdam, feel free to ask me anything about the school, you should all consider it in your college search!

What other reasons would you have a playboy for? :p

Haha...I was told this by many guys here! Playboy also ranked our sculpture garden as the #1 make out point in LA...so random! Ok, this is getting a little too far off topic.

Yes Actually, although I don't know too much about it, I'm told by my peers that Clarkson has a very good Biomedical, and Pre-Med program. You'd have to check the website for more details.

While we're on the topic of universities, don't forget Georgia Tech!!!!! We're a great engineering school located in Atlanta, Georgia. The FIRST team here is part of the team recruitment effort for the Peachtree Regional making it's first appearance this year. Tech is a great school for future engineers. We also have a lot of student competition groups. Our Motorsports team just won first place in their competition in England. We also have mini-baja, aerial robotics, Battlebots, and many many more competition teams. Professors are usually really easy to get in touch with and supportive. We also have one of the best co-op programs out there. Consider us in your college search!!!!! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Oh yeah, we also offer a FIRST scholarship.

After looking at WPI, Univeristy of New Haven, and Clarkson i decided to apply early to Clarkson and got in (didn't even apply to ther other 2). Really excited about next year and i'm glad i'll have the ability to continuing with FIRST throughout collage. Good luck to 229 this year

lets not forget WPI
they also have a robotics team (team 190)

thats where I want to go in fall 2004 (I'm a junior right now, so i still have a year to wait)

I would go t clarkson but there are 2 reasons why i prefer WPI
- closer to home
- WPI has a lot more music groups then Clarkson (according to the brochures/ websites of WPI and Clarkson). And since music makes most of my life it's kinda imporant to me.

I'm so happy that I've already been accepted to two of my three candidate schools. I know that there is a FIRST team from Rolla, MO, so that's cool. Does anybody know if Rose-Hulman does any FIRST stuff?

I'd also like to say that Clarkson sent me too much mail!

Also, didn't Richard Feynman teach at Clarkson for a while before CalTech?

I thought I'd put in my thoughts on Clarkson too, just because we are really looking for FIRST veterans to help our team out up here. I'm a freshman here and I really love it. It's a pretty small campus, which makes getting around, and getting to know people really easy. Classes are tough but there is always somewhere to get help! Our FIRST team is one of the most respected SPEED teams at Clarkson, as john was saying earlier. The people on the team, as well as everyone else on campus, are really great! I don't think I could have made a better choice on where to go to college. So come up here and visit. Or stop by our pits at UTC and Nationals and we'll tell you anything you want to know.

Nah, as of right now they do not. I applied there too and I have been bugging Brian (former driver of 365) to get a team up there started...*sigh* sadly, he thinks he needs more connections before he gets one going.
