My daughter is starting at St Mary's in Notre Dame, IN. Are there any other robo-kids going to St Mary's? Hard to believe she would be the only one. :)
Just curious.
No, there are not since FIRST has banned students from going to this university.

First banned? Huh? This is the college in Indiana, and since when can First ban anything? I assume I am missing a joke somewhere.

Ahhh... it is late... and it was more a weird statement than a joke. I thought one of the other St Mary's around the country did something stupid. I know there is one in Texas that supports First quite a bit.

Don't know if there is a FIRST group at St. Mary's Nortre Dame, however if your daughter would like to stay involved with FIRST FRC there are 3 FRC teams in South Bend, one in Mishawaka (5 miles away) and one in Elkhart (15 miles away).
Also there are several FIRST FTC & LEGO teams in the area that she could connect with. We are Family...!
PM me if she is interested and I would be more than happy to put her in touch with some of the teams & area leaders :) .

Well of course she is going to stay active in First. :) I work about 5 minutes from St Mary's and I have mentored 2959 for 4 years now. She is just looking for like minded students on campus. She is already planning on mentoring either 2959 or one of the local teams here. Pretty sure she has planned on mentoring since she started as a freshman.
St Mary's doesn't have a First team nor does Notre Dame they have other programs (robotics football), but they aren't First. :)

I am going to be attending Notre Dame next fall, so while maybe not the same school, pretty close to the same campus as your daughter. I did FTC and FRC for four years, so I too am looking for a team to mentor in South Bend. If anyone from those local teams is interested, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Don't limit your search to South Bend.
There are several small towns right across the border in Michigan.
Niles has 2 teams. Edwardsburg has a team. Buchanan has a team.

I'll be a junior next fall in Notre Dame's Mechanical Engineering program. We don't have any formal FIRST stuff on campus, but I know a couple people who mentored nearby teams, and also there are some good volunteer opportunities because we are near two states that are all districts. Notre Dame does have other programs besides FIRST though, including Baja Team, Formula Hybrid SAE (this is a new team, definitely might be a great place to jump right in), Robotic Football, Rocketry Team, Chem-E-Car, Steel Bridge, Concrete Canoe, Design Build Fly, and many other great teams.

Yeah, we are actually from this area. We mentor a team just north of Niles, 45 minutes to 1 hour away. We were just looking to see if there were any first alum's going to St Mary's. The First community around here is incredible. The Michiana (Michigan/Indiana) mentors have started meeting every month just cause. :)
Finding a team to volunteer on is not an issue.

Hey have you thought of starting a FIRST club at Notre Dame? We have one here at Purdue, and we'd be more than happy to help you start one up. Notre Dame would be PERFECT because of the local FIRST community both in northern Indiana but also Michigan (I'm from the area, 135 alum). If you need a club sponsor I would talk to Robert Stevenson in the EE department. Hes a mentor so he'd be a good person to talk to

I've thought about it, but I've never really put the wheels in motion. I already do band and I'm trying Rocketry this year, so I'd have to find some other people on campus who are interested first. But it could definitely be a nice thing to do, even if it only starts out as a sort of alumni network for students to volunteer and mentor together.

yeah i understand that. it can be daunting to start something like that, but if you want to email me, hoconno@purdue.edu, I can help you out with details of getting it started/organization of it and i know of people in the area who would be may be interested (some at Holy Cross, though i dont see that as an issue).
and if you dont want to start a club i can still get you in contact with the local teams if you want to help them out :)
