Brunswick Eruption- Who's Coming?

Just wanted to drop everyone a note and say that the BE website ( http://www.geocities.com/brunswick_eruption/BrunswickEruption.html) was just updated and we are now less than a month away.

We still have some slots open for you fence-sitter teams but we expect to finish up our registrations this weekend at Ramp Riot.

Teams 25 and 303 have been working our treads off for months now preparing for this event. I guarantee you this will be one event your team doesn't want to miss.

So if you reside anywhere within a 3 hour drive of Central NJ and your team is still breathing drop us a line and get in while you still can.

This will be the LAST CHANCE TO DANCE with your 2002 robot.

I guarantee that you will have fun at BE. If not you can personally yell at me. You can quote that.

I also guarantee that if the Moehawk makes an appearance on the field then the Silver Scorpion will wear green for the match. Also quote for that.

We have 14 different trophies to award. Ladies rounds, obstacle course, drag racing robots, robot strongman competition. We may even squeeze in some adults only rounds if the time can be worked.

Since this will be the last chance for the 2002 robots to play I expect an all out, do or die competition.

So far only Team 341 will have attended the MD State Fair, DoD, Ramp Riot, and the North Brunswick Eruption.

The only teams that have a chance to join us are 84, 225 and 487.

Will anyone else be a Grand Slammer? Or will team 341 be the only recipient of the FIRST Robotics "Too Stupid to Stop Playing" trophy? Only time will tell.

It was a carved pineapple with a rubber band on the end. It ended up being a part of the robot (team 222's) for the metal ruler to work :p the pineapple blesses us all :D

More news on the BE front-

BE will be covered by Cablevision who will be doing a program on the event and FIRST. There may be other additional TV and news coverage.

Our opening ceremonies have several local officials and one highly recognizable FIRST celebrity attending.

We have 21 teams on the list as of today- 3 slots left.

Now the team number total adds up to 7439. I'll tell you that in addition to 303 and 25, 102 is on the list. The challenge above is still on

The Pineapple live in my book bag and is ready for it's next glory. There is a long story as to to the origin to the pineapple, more interest, hunt me down at the eruption!

We also hope to have special pins for ouy crew at RR and also for our alliances. Can't wait to see everyone there!

Actually, I have the Moe Stix since the beginning. Remember the "little" hostage incident, tjrage_25 (aka StickNapper) and slaveofchernoble (aka malcomp).

That reminds me, if I can find the video we'll play the torture session during lunch at Brunswick Eruption! :D

By the way, for those who don't know, we did release one, semi-undamaged, hostage at RR, in hope Moe would come to our competition. The other stick, however was used as a bumper at RR, and is still in our custody.

I spoke to him at DD the other day and I think I had him convinced. I am holding a spot for 87. All you need to do now is prove that you can survive a Battle of the Bands and BE all in one weekend- without adversely effecting your school work.

If I were you I would be extra nice to your advisor, do little things to help him out and, as a team. show him that you really want to go. A good team can accomplish anything they put their minds to.

why im flattered. you know i never got any credit for it but the scissor lift basket idea was mine from, well, day 1.(kickoff) we had a design meeting right after kickoff and i suggested a scissor lift basket like the one on our robot.

Hey guys-

Before everybody begins rumors that there is some sort of match fixing going on for BE let me say that the match schedule is already set and the model for the matchups is already made. I have been working on it for days and I am trying my best to assure that (in this order)
a. no two teams are paired together twice
b. all of a team's matches are at least 3 rounds apart
c. playing opposite teams twice is kept to a minimum

Right now the model is in an A,B,C--- format with us substituting the team numbers when we get close to the competition. It will be completely random in how these letters are assigned. I will probably pick them out of a hat in the end.

If you want something to think about how about concentrating on how your team will play the "other games". Check out the BE web page for their descriptions.

There will be robot action throughout the day, field willing, and we will soon see which robots are the fastest, strongest and most agile. And the ladies will have a chance to make their impression on the crowd.

Don't forget the extra batteries.

WOW...I have a few things to say to that.

1. How many times have we faced you, period, and now take out the times when we were only half functional at PA Robot Challange.

2. How do you know we will be grabbing 3 goals against you? I seem to have memories of us employing other strategies against you the last few times, and being pretty successfull.

3. I guess we'll just have to take this to the playing field, heh, but watch out, we have something special in store for you and everyone else.

Lets see ... beginning with Nats....... our last match of qualifying rounds..... you were with 710... and we were with a very simplistic bot..... interesting battle.... sorry for climbing onto your arm..... great match.....

PARC..... a match up during qualifying.... no problem...... we were against you in either quarters or semi finals..... we choose 103 and 341 to ally with us.... I recall us entering our usual deadlock... then spinning in several different directions to rotate you across the field.... (ok.. benefit of the doubt if you were injured)

Duel.... our 'driver team' of two years was not present... however, I heard that two of our newbs.. whom have never attended one team function.. and had to have someone turn the circuit breaker on for them.. beat you once....

Ramp Riot - "who won?"

..... ok.... scratch out all of history...... and when we meet again.... you bring along you fancy dandy new arm...... (pending that our driver team can stay healthy enough to compete) :(

FYI we had a weld in a hinge break at RR so thats why the wing bent so bad. And at RR i do remember 303 being the one who bent our wing even after sustaining so much of a beating.

Hahaha, i cant wait to see some rematches. So no excuses anymore, we're just gonna go out there and have fun, last match of the season and we wont hold back, hopefully no one else will either.

I am getting final confirmations from most of them now. I will post the whole list on the BE web page in the next few days. Take my word- the competition will be mixed and quite good.

I am also looking to post the match list in advance if possible. I just need the last two slots filled and all confirmations in.

BTW- two camera crews will be filming the event and chances are we will all be in a Cablevision program. I hit the newspapers for the third time tomorrow by phone.

Ok, to clear this up once and for all. The whole Titanium wings thing was a joke. We wouldn't have enough funds to do that either. However, we ARE improving the wings. Thats all I can say right now, you'll have to wait to find out how. Anyone else getting anxious about where Nationals are going to be?

Bad brad (and other)-

Gracious professionalism will prevail at BE. In my opinion no need to change your machine from DD but recall that the added weight was to allow a tether device to be added. Hopefully nobody would try to beef up by adding weights just for weight's sake.

Hey, we didn't beef up the weight and I think we did fine at DD, PARC and RR.

I've posted some basics, things to bring and rules clafifications on the BE website. All attendees should take a look. Rules will be essentially the same as at RR. After some consideration and much discussion we've rebuilt the elimination rounds schedule so all teams can play.

The schedule for the day will be really tight. Please plan to stay to the end because we have a big awards ceremony planned.

Add hangers to the list of things to bring. I am attempting to get a coat rack going so all those cold weather garments don't end up shoved under the pit tables.

And don't forget the colored domes!!!

Hey Teams- the big day is almost here!! This is the final e-mail to prepare for Brunswick Eruption. Please take a look at the points below and be prepared for a wild day of robots and fun.


What to bring- Remind your coaches!!!
Please be sure to have the following with you-
1. SAFETY GLASSES for your team
2. both your light domes
3. a power strip
4. hangers for your coats
5. your team banners and such- duct tape may be needed to get them on the walls
6. cameras

Our SGO is sponsoring a holiday FOOD DRIVE at the event. If your team wishes to participate we and they would be very grateful.

Robot Drop Off and Registration-
Upon arrival please send a team member in the front main entrance (parking lot side) to register your team. You may bring your machine in through the front doors ( with handicap ramp available) or you can drop it off in the rear of the gym area where there is a direct access to the pits via a small stairway.

The competition- In the end we have 21 teams from 4 states..
They are 11,25,41,56,84,87,102,222,223,224,271,293,303,341, 365,613,618,651,752,834,869

Food and Beverages-
We will have a comprehensive food concession going throughout the day. At arrival we will have breakfast items and beverages. Lunch service will run from about 11 to 1. Snacks and drinks will be available throughout the day. We are prepared for 1000 diners. Sorry- all food and drinks must stay in the Commons area.

Press Coverage-
At the time of writing we will have two video crews and at least 3 newspapers covering the event. Expect to be photographed or interviewed at some point during the day. Feel free to invite any press folks you normally deal with to cover the event. We have been advertised on WMGQ radio for the past two weeks. We seek a crowd of over 1000. (Hey- I'm an optimist)

We went to Rally in the Valley, Mayhem at the Merimack and BattleCry!

We wanted to go to Bash, but everybody had previous plans.

We actually won Mayhem and we went with only 2 people!!

This season we have done sooo much travelling

We've driven more miles then we flew to florida (back and forth)

what to do with 20 teams-

the answer is- wildcard playoffs

7 alliances- top three guaranteed semis- bottom 4 play off for the 4th spot and a shot at #1.

Don't worry- you will have a lot to do. Don't forget ALL your batteries and a tether for use in the pits..

As for the three dropout teams- well you guys just tell them all about the great time they missed come Monday.

Tonight I am assembling the team literature packs. The field arrives tomorrow. Friday we put it up. Oy vay!!!

Remember- we will have 4 other events during the midday games period-

1. ladies only rounds

2. robot drag racing- elimination style- this will be bizarre with 4 machines on two separate tracks racing in opposite directions at the same time.

3. strength battle- 2 minutes of fury to see who has the muscle machine- elims again

4. the obstacle course- timed race to see who can navigate the cones course fastest

The audience will also be doing some voting on their favorite robots.

The trophies are hand made and the most bizarro things yet. Mr. Volcano is awarding them at the end of the day.

BTW- after 4 MAJOR revisions of the seeding round lists I think you will be seeing some killer matches. To the best of our abilities no team partners with the same team twice. There are not teams playing in consecutive rounds (although some are a round apart), Each team gets six seeding rounds and I've tried to get matches against a diversity of opponents. This entire thing was NOT EASY and had to be completely redone twice as teams dropped out. I'll admit it could use a few improvements but the time is running out and we have lots more to do.

Don't forget your canned goods for our SGO food drive if you have them. Our school's kids have one canned item as their admission fee.

The event has been advertised on the local radio for 2 weeks now. You WILL be seeing the press at this one : )

Anywho, after several days of rebuilding MOEHawk, I don't want to see my baby destroyed again, so we did do a little bit of reinforcement. I hope we can at least get to the finals at this competition.... we haven't made it past the semi-finals this entire season! Meh.. (in the beginning) it was fun watching other teams get frustrated because they can't move MOEHawk. Then it progressed into anger... then the other alliance would center a strategy arround causing the most damage while giving both teams zero qualifying points. Not like MOEHawk cares about qualifying points... it wasn't designed to be a high scorer. You wanna know why we got the team spirit award in Florida? I'll tell you even if you don't want to know.. and it had very little to do with the sticks. It was because we were in 68th place and cheering louder than the people in first. No matter what the outcome of the match was.. if MOEHawk worked, we were chearing. QPs mean little to us, but we do try to help other teams whenever we can. Even if it means repairing a drive train on a bot that has a match against us so they can pull out of the end zone to give our alliance zero points.

Yeah.. by that point, the wings had taken enough damage already. With all of the teams at a competition out to 'just do damage' against us, what can you expect with only one set of wings? A weld was cracked on the right wing joint, and the left wing gripper section was already bent outwards. After several tests, we have found that there is one piece that fell off during our match with you guys that allowed 303 to bend the wing so easily. We have reinforced that one piece and we should be able to hold up a little better.

Another thing... this being the last competition, I know everyone is going to be aiming to do as much damage as possible to MOEHawk. I'm not dumb, I know what goes on. Especially when teams come over to our pits to see what we are working on and then discuss strategies of how to best hurt MOEHawk when we are within earshot of their plotting. Didn't sound very gracious or professional to me... just my oppinion

Yeah rookies can be stupid. Case in point, one of the MOE rookies at Ramp Riot decided it would be fun to try and take our devil hair. He found out you do not mess with the 'do. i believe he was tied up. i think someone on MOE has it on tape.

you think the fact that MOEhawk has been knighted will scare us? no. it doesnt. in fact instead of me being afraid i want to beat you guys even more. Gracious Professionalism is modified when it comes to playing MOE. yes it hurts to see such a well designed robot mauled, but it is so fun at the same time.

yea, moe gets beat up pretty bad, and even though you are going for the goals, and as much fun as it must be to beat the giant, it does get a little sour when kids on the side are screaming, bend the *bleep* robot.

hey i had fun, and they were all good matches, i just cant wait to see if you guys can bend us tomorrow.

That was an example of the power of a dollar. He actually wasn't a rookie, just a hungry guy who didn't have any money for food. So, rather than just give him money, we decided we were going to make him do funny stuff, and yes, we have it all on tape.

Hey bummer to hear you guys aren't gonna be able to make it, we're still gonna be headed down. we have three waves of vehicles going....mine and the robot hauler being first with another set of students and advisors following an hour later, and finally a lone parent driving several students....would offer seat, but there is currently only one open in my vehicle and we are leaving at 4:00 from Tunkhannock. I'm jsut hoping the claw isn't too mad at us for making it sleep in the snow..... good luck to all other participants! we'll be there in full force!
