View Full Version : I am a geek because...

My computer is worth twice as much as my car.
Lets keep this going, and only post things that actually apply to you.
...because I spent 100-150 hours writing RoboEmu but can't sit down for 1.5 hours to write a college application essay.
...because the value of my backpack triples depending on whether I have my calculator with me.
...because I've seen myself as the only person logged into ChiefDelphi.
...because my computer sounds like a 747 taking off.
...because I have a box of old FIRST motors, gears, and mounting plates on the floor of my room.

I am a geek because.......
-I like a good movie, but LOVE a good documentary.
-The radio in my car is almost always tuned to NPR.

...I still havent taken drivers ed yet (I'm 16 and a junior) and I wont take it until 4th quarter of this year because I would rather do FIRST (taking drivers ed any sooner would require me to miss 3 out of 5 meetings a week during the 6 week time we have to build the bot)
...I spent about 6 hours making my teams website (8 if you count the 2 it took me to learn basic HTML)(http://trhsroboticsteam.tripod.com), yet i cant focus and do english hw for more than an hour
...My FIRST binders are organized beyond belief, yet my school binders I couldnt care less about
...I have 3 FIRST binders. The FIRST manual for that year. A binder of Innovation First manuals. And I also have a binder for team related stuff (public relations, team roster, member info, etc)
...I have actually considered instead of buying a car, buy robot parts (such as an Isaac 16 or 32 system, among other things such as motors, Victor 883s, spikes, wheels, etc)(keep in mind i will only actually be driving for a year then I'm off to college, so buying a car to use only for a year kinda doesnt make much sense) so that i can build my own robot (not for any sort of competition, but just for the fun of it)
...I spent all math class last year programming my TI-83 Plus with programs that do out almost and geometrical formula for me
...I made a TI-83 Plus program that calculates the score, winner etc of the 2002 game (it asks you for a few numbers, like how many balls, goals, bots, in scoring position, calculates each alliance's score, and if it is tied, it runs through all the tie breakers)
...When I get bored in any of my classes I pull out a FIRST binder and do FIRST stuff
...Most of my online time is spent looking at FIRST, FIRST related (like this one), or other robotics related sites.
..when i get bored at home i go downstairs to my basement and experiment/ fiddle with all my robotics parts (motors from old kits, transmissions, old controllers from the really old kits (before innovtaion first) old batteries, etc)
..one of my favorite past-times is taking apart mechanical or electrical things just to see how they work, and if i could use and parts from them (so far i have taken apart 1 RC car, 3 calculators, 2 video camera remote controls (the tethered kind, not wireless), and an old computer tape deck (had this cool motor assembly that resembles one of those cranes in the crane games at arcades, but smaller))(by the way, all those things were either not working, or no longer wanted)
...I can write in Binary Code (i once wrote a half a page long note in binary, just to have some fun and confuse the person)
...I enjoy messing with peoples minds (when they get up from their desk i switch their stuff around, not taking it, just relocating it on the same desk, and watch them get confused. Or when people sit in the same seat every day (even though they arent assigned seats) i randomly sit in a new seat every so often, just to screw people up)
...it took me more than 20min to wirte this post (and I'll probably think of more and edit this post again and again and again)
...I have edited ths post 4 times in the last day

I am a geek because:
I've been dating one for the past 8 years...
I have two domain names all of my own...
I spend 3-4 hours a day on the Net...
I once won 2nd place for best role-player in a Role-playing tournament...
I read at least 5 books a week...
I've been to a Slashdot meet-up (heck, I've even posted on Slashdot)...
Truthfully, I'm still more of a freak than a geek, but I think the two mix together in most cases anyhow.

- i'm almost 18 and i don't even have a permit yet
- i made our teams video for 2002 in one day, working about 12 hours straight
- the only two webpages i keep open are CD and the FIRST site
- my computers desktop is always FIRST related
- my friend mentioned einstien, and i thought of the feild at nationals before the person

- I post replies to "I am a geek because..." thread
- I have already designed this years controll panel...including a detailed list of materials and building procedures...even though i dont know what this years game or functions with entail...
- I search ebay and garage sales for random toggle switches and push buttons to use on my panel
...can't think of any more right now...

Yes, but do you have the +1 karma bonus...
...I'd give up my car before my computer.
...I've spent 3 days straight on the internet.
...I recompile my kernel because I'm bored.
...I can still connect to the internet even when my parents take away all the cables (the network cable, the phone cable, and the power adapter) and change the password for my ISP.
...I have played songs on my internal speaker (harder than it would seem...).
...I could go a few weeks (2-3) without wearing something besides a robotics/computer shirt. (Multiply the time by about 4 if I don't wash them...shirts are clean untill you roll around in the dirt or spill something on them)
...I do a daily search on google for 'evulish' to see what I'm in.
...I currently have more computers than I have ever had girlfriends (that would also be true if I got rid of all but one computer...Hmm...0 girlfriends...*sigh*).
...I had well over 300% participation in robotics this year. (I spent probably around at least 2 extra hours each meeting and spent the night a few times...I never missed an entire meeting)
...My vacation will be cut short because it would overlap kickoff
I'm sure there are many more...I just can't think of any :D

i';ve never missed a meeting... such a huge ammount of hours, if someone was in the robotics room, i was there with them
- i refresh the cd forums to see if anyone posted in here every minute
- i have more than 4 computers in my room, about 4 and a half
-I just spent at least a week setting up Gentoo Linux on my computer, for no reason whatsoever (besides the knowledge that I just made Linux work on my computer).
-I'm taking CISCO Networking Semster 1 this semester, and will be able to get my CCNA by the time I graduate high school (i'm a junior now).
-My room is a disaster area, but I know exactly where everything is.
-I'm in all honors and AP classes, except for English (maybe that's why my spelling is horrible...).
-I spent the summer at Brookhaven National Lab, and made more Cryo-Cream then actually doing work (LN2 == Lots of fun :D).
-I was happy when I was allowed to gut old computers and get 72 pin RAM (along with other fun stuff such as keylocks :)).
-I got the TI-83+ Silver Edition because it's faster and has more ROM.
-I used to play Kiloblaster and Jill of the Jungle on my dad's 486 (actually, it might have been a 286 or a 386, i can't remember) when i was no more than 5 years old.
-I'm probably one of the most dedicated team members on 810.
-I've had a LAN since the good old days of Coaxial Cable (Dasiy Chains, YAY!).
<EDIT>
-I had the robot at my house all summer because I wanted to try to make a dashboard program (which has since been determined a failure because Flash and C++ don't like to play together).
</EDIT>
That's all I can think of for now, but I do have a few 'anti-geek' things too :p.
-I'm in boy scouts, and I'm halfway through my Eagle Project.
-I love going outside and hiking (I wish I could go upstate more).
That's all of my 'anti-geek' things I can think of. I think it shows how much of a geek I am... :)

-I knew the layout of Disneyland before I even went
-I can spend 10 hours on Rollercoaster Tycoon and not even know 10 hours pased
-I can recite the entire speil to Test Track, Tower of Terror, Pooh, Pirates (WE WANT THE REDHEAD!), Splash, Big Thunder, ToN, ToD, Illuminations, and others.

- I can identify practically any roller coaster on Earth from a photograph. It's easier with American and Canadian coasters, though.
- I have memorized the entire soundtrack to Disney's Haunted Mansion
- I rename all of my MP3s in a uniform file name format.
- I put my arms in the air on coasters even before they've left the station.
- I knew the names and life stories of all seven Mercury astronauts long before I knew anything about Joe Dimaggio, Joe Lewis, Joe Theisman, or Joe Namath (why are so many sports figures named "Joe"?)
- I give out my office phone number in hexidecimal code.
- I learned to use a slide rule just because I thought it was cool.
- the first biography I ever read was "Einstein: The Life And Times" by Ron Clark
- I was the first student programmer ever hired by the Fairfax County, VA, school system - in 1974.
- I still have a copy of the first program I ever wrote, and it's on paper punch tape (but I don't have a TTY tape reader to read it anymore! :( )
- I have way more robotics/computer t-shirts than Evulish! (I've had a lot longer to collect them) But the really sad part is some of them are now approaching 25 years old - and I still wear them.
- my set of "Dungeons and Dragons" related materials collected during college took up more shelf space than all my non-engineering / non-computer science text books combined.
- every athletic endeavor in which I have participated has been a fundamentally "individual sport" (martial arts, scuba diving, rock climbing, bicycling), and I have always shunned traditional "team sports."
- I have way more power tools than any sane person should have.
- I built my first computer by hand wire-wrapping the whole thing together on 12 breadboards, following a set of "suggestions" (they weren't really instructions) in The Bugbook - Volume 2.
I'm going to stop now, becuase I am getting depressed as I read back through this...

I eat dream and think robotics real and imaginary. Medabots is my favorite cartoon and one of my favorite video games. I love anything that involves building things. My favorite shows I watch are: Junkyardwars, Monster Garage, Rough Science, Battlebots, Robotica, Robot Wars, and Operation Junkyard. Ive researched every single robot competition in the United States and I am sad to say that there isn't that many near New York:(.

T.V. bad.
Internet Good.
I have:
AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (1.7ghz)
PIII 600mhz
PII 333mhz
PI 200mhz
Some obscure macintosh that NO version of linux will support
and I have my first computer's MotherBoard on my wall with all my FIRST medallions hangnig on it. I also have the processor(PI 75mhz) and RAM(EDO 8mb) from that system in my backpack since 6th grade.
I have enough MP3s that I could start playing them the first of the month and without pausing stopping or anything, not hear a repeat till the 16th.
Besides classic rock, Cake and Violent Femmes are the best bands ever.
I run FTP, HTTP, TELNET, VNC, SHoutcast, and DNS( for the rest of my house) servers.
If the mouse doesn't have a laser, throw it out in a week.
My Computer doesn't go off except for upgrades.
I don't see how people are ever bored.
I know the meaning of life. and yes it is a number.
I once Tri-booted.
I feel one mouse per computer is never enough.
I hate the fact that I'm forced to use a printer.
I use my computers as heaters. I close my door and in 10 minutes my room is hotter then the rest of the house.
My first date with my girlfriend was BattleCry 3.

the only thing that is a plus over windows is the easy of use. of course, that takes the fun out of setting up a linux system. the fact that it takes me an hour to set up windows, compared to a week for linux (gentoo at least) makes windows slightly better, but then i remember that gentoo is compiled for my system, and that it isn't going to crash anytime soon. :)

TV is evil.
I have 8 computers in my room.
I have more friends online than at school (about
150 more)
I have 2 OSes on most of my computers, more on others.
I can use two computers at the same time
My monitor is almost bigger than my TV
I use my computers more than 10 hours a day
I can tell somebody how to repartition their hard drive, reformat their hard drive, and thoroughly reinstall everything on their computer WITHOUT having to be looking at one (I know the process by heart)
I can type faster with two fingers than most people can with all their hands
I learned 99% of all my computer knowledge without anyone to teach it to me (or any books)
I've had more than 1 website at a time
I run my own webserver
I can actually use a computer without a monitor hooked up :)
I run many many many servers
My room is typically hotter than any other room in the house because my computers act as floor heaters
I do know the meaning of life too ;)
I can go through keyboards and mice faster than some people can go through toothbrushes
I am one of very few people that has ever worn out a mouse because the wire connecting it to the computer fell in pieces
I can name, and know how to fix almost every computer apple has ever made (this also applies for most other computers on the market)
I know there are at least 5 versions of the "Peanut butter jelly time" flash
The only DVDs I own are ones I've burned
When I'm bored @ school I start drawing mechanisms, buildings, neat computer case designs, etc.
I actually had dreams of playing with the following devices: ibook, ipod, powerbook
My favorite text editor is pico
When I'm bored at home I like to take websites and redo them my way, then normally sending off the idea to a webmaster
I can tell anyone the difference between a CRT and LCD.
I've actually had people yell at me to stop talking when I ramble about technological architectures and such.
I have read the white paper on countless processors and can tell you the difference between platforms, etc.
When things break I like to take them apart and fix them
I actually trust my electrical work
Most of the lights (the hard wired ones) in this house were installed by ME
I can open the hood of a car and identify nearly all of the parts and what they do, even without never knowing the car before
I can sit aside a semi-busy street and name the manufacturer of every car that goes by
I can name the brand of a computer (and usualyl it's specs) just by looking at it
When people ask me if I know (popular TV show or music video goes here, or artist, etc) I don't have a clue
I actually know more than one type of IP (interllectual property and internet protocol)
Hrmmmm what else?
*shrug*
Oh yeah: I took driver's ed on a computer instead of in a class

A few more I forgot before:
I was the first to respond to this thread.
My MIT essay was on why Legos are the best invention of the 20th century.
When internet explorer crashes, I click "debug" and look through the assembly code.
I write whitepapers for fun.
In school, I do only what the teacher asks, in FIRST I end up doing about 10x what I have to.
When someone says "X" I think XFree86 (Linux).
IPv6 gives me nightmares.
Cisco 2500 routers and Catalyst 5000 switches speak to me.
My primary computer has a 5.25" floppy drive.
I know my NIC's MAC address by heart.
I see physics equations while looking at things happening in the world.

i got dean kamen's autograph 3 times
i got woodie's autograph once
i have got Dave Lavery's autograph at the Buckeye regional last year.
i have the most posts on Chief Delphi.
i maxed out my AOL buddy list
i TP the houses of kids on other FIRST teams
i almost wet myself when we got our new mill
i dream about robotics meetings
my friends call me a geek
i watch people sign on and off in my buddy list instead of doing homework
i got an A+ on my midterm portfolio for my composition class. this paper was the longest i had ever written and it was about us winning the 2001 motorola midwest regional.
i wear a TechnoKats polo shirt to work and i think it's cool
i am trying to plan how im going to steel, err borrow, the Highway 234 sign in Indiana.
my passwords are numbers of other FIRST teams
my best friends are on a team
i visit former students on other FIRST teams
when i visit family in kokomo i always wear my technokats shirt with the hopes of someone on the team seeing me. :(
my team asks me first about any rumors or good stuff happening on chiefdelphi
that's about it for now...
Forgot, I have a column in my local newspaper about computers. Durrrrrrrr

I know why a curve ball actually curves
I saw every Brady Bunch episode at least 3 times
The crap that the professor could make out of a coconut on Gilligan's Island didn't fool me.
I can name the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd receivers for each NFL team (Fantasy Football geek).
While I know the torque-speed curves for all of the FIRST motors, I also have been known to forget to bring my wallet to Florida.
I am sometimes disappointed when 5:00 rolls around and I gotta stop running my CAD station.
My wife and kids have gone away for a Saturday and I go into work and design FIRST robots.
During the FIRST season, I cannot sleep at night until we get our team's design done.
While playing Sim City on my home computer, I often grasp in air... trying to locate my Spaceball... then I realize that I only use my Spaceball while on CAD at work.
I refuse to pay anyone to work on anything at my house. Even if I have no experience with some piece of equipment, I can usually fix it.... it may take me a while, but it will get fixed.
I calculated the best way to mow my 3+1/2-acre yard... I start in a circle in the middle of my yard and I can drive continually without slowing down for 45 minutes.
The fact that I have been posting in these forums since they opened before the 1999 season. Go ahead... check the archives... I know you're jealous. :)
My list of FIRST contacts is almost to 1,000 people.
Other TechnoKats often make fun of me for how geeky I am with FIRST team numbers, the teams, and what their robots can do.
I many not know how to configure my BIOS on my computer, but I am still a geek.

Although most of mine have been said, I'd like to add 2 more to the list.
1. I learned some Linear B and Egyptian hieroglyphs: not only the symbols, but the languages behind them too (Ancient Greek and Ancient Coptic respectively).
2. While my online banking uses 1024 bit RSA encryption, I use 3072 bit DH/DSS encryption. I have encrypted "hello" below in my public key (If anybody can derive my private key from that I'll give them a nickel :)).

Stolen from its Jargon File entry (http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/html/entry/geek.html)
geek
n.
A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance. Geeks usually have a strong case of neophilia. Most geeks are adept with computers and treat hacker as a term of respect, but not all are hackers themselves - and some who are in fact hackers normally call themselves geeks anyway, because they (quite properly) regard `hacker' as a label that should be bestowed by others rather than self-assumed.
One description accurately if a little breathlessly enumerates "gamers, ravers, science fiction fans, punks, perverts, programmers, nerds, subgenii, and trekkies. These are people who did not go to their high school proms, and many would be offended by the suggestion that they should have even wanted to."
Originally, a `geek' was a carnival performer who bit the heads off chickens. (In early 20th-century Scotland a `geek' was an immature coley, a type of fish.) Before about 1990 usage of this term was rather negative. Earlier versions of this lexicon defined a `computer geek' as one who eats (computer) bugs for a living - an asocial, malodorous, pasty-faced monomaniac with all the personality of a cheese grater. This is often still the way geeks are regarded by non-geeks, but as the mainstream culture becomes more dependent on technology and technical skill mainstream attitudes have tended to shift towards grudging respect. Correspondingly, there are now `geek pride' festivals (the implied reference to `gay pride' is not accidental).
See also propeller head, clustergeeking, geek out, wannabee, terminal junkie, spod, weenie, geek code, alpha geek.

I'm a geek because the first computer I repaired had a maladjusted clutch.
I didn't even think about going to my high school prom.
I spent more on my first calculator (PCs didn't exist then) than on my first car. (Of course it's not hard to spend more than $0.00).
I ride a bicycle whenever possible because it is the most efficient form of transportation known to man (95-99% of energy input goes to motion)
I spend my free time thinking up new tranny designs for robots.
I use vacation time to attend FIRST competitions.
I'm sure my wife could think of more.

-but that only cancels out only one geek thing.

(whoever made that scoring program for their calc, can i see the code you used. that would be so cool to see it)
-see above parentheses for another sign of my geekiness.
-am upset with my 833mhz pentium 3 gateway computer. (why cant we get a faster one?)
-first thing i look for in the sunday newspaper is the Best Buy and Circut City ads
-Want many high tech things that i will never get(ie. segway, pda, laptop...)
-get excited when Dean Kamen signed my shirt
i could go on and on. but ill stop now
-Ian
i wrote all those things but some of you guys are more geekier than me

Well I can definately say that I'm not a techie kind of geek. I can boil down what my computer is used for to these things: email, IM, writing papers, checking delphi, and seeing what's being served in the dining hall that day.
I am however, a politics geek. I mean, do you know how excited I was when I memorized all the Presidents in order? I used to be the go-to girl for knowing ammendments and supreme court cases and now all I do is live and breathe politics (ok, that's a little extreme but that's just cuz I finished 3 hours of Bruin Democrat tabling and am way stoked for elections tomorrow). Forget college parties, I'm going to a post-election night party to rub elbows with all the California politicians.
Seeing Ozzy Osbourne (the fore-mentioned "freak") on campus was cool, meeting Dean Kamen even better, being a foot away from Bill Clinton...I almost died!

You make me go to Ham Fairs and lectures about Linux.
You work on an ex-girlfriend's laptop before you go shopping for our anniversary (don't think you'll live that one down...)
You collect LED flashlights (which I'm not complaining about, it gives me something to buy for you for gift giving occasions)
You collect Walkie-talkies and have pictures of them on your web site.
By age 12 you were hanging out at Radio Shack everyday giving people advice (and they listened because you knew what you were talking abou).
You make lists. Lots and lots of lists.
I've never seen you happier than when you're taking something apart to figure out how it works or putting it together to see if it works.
You have a web page dedicated completely to your home computer with pictures and descriptions of each part.

I was trying to keep my life/lack of off this thread. Which is why I hadn't bothered to list the "one or two" quirks I could have listed about myself in this thread. (no comments from the peanut gallery, let me slide with that number....thanks)
I'm sure your post really doesn't shock any of the people who know either of us - but I still had a chance to fool the new FIRST people who didn't know me well enough yet. THANKS!
By the way, for what it's worth since everyone keeps wondering about the National - I think it would be cool for FIRST to move the National from Epcot to a new city IF :
A) it was a cheaper option for teams and saved teams a couple thousand $ in hotels/transportation (no forced hopper pass, etc...) compared to past years
B) it was in a city more in the middle of the country, so that the majority of teams had shorter travel and less than a 3 hour time difference. (sorry Alaska & Hawaii and a few others - but it would still be 1 or 2 hours closer)
PS - that's an example from the "When your life or lack thereof is being discussed, change the subject quickly" handbook.

Last two times apple released new hardware (not including this time) I stayed up all night and was the first person to announce it on spymac + macnn.
I was nearly banned from macnn once for posting so much
To date, I'm the only person ever in the history of macnn to have a negative post count
This is like the tenth time I've posted in this thread.

I'm a geek for far to many reasons. I have my varsity jacket for FIRST. I base my life off my electronics. I will easily sit online for hours on end and talk to my friends instead of ever picking up the phone. I got a 6 inch long, 1 inch wide band of metal splinters in my hand/wrist and was able to laugh it off and make a "good thing i had my saftey glasses on" joke.
My bookcase is 75% programming books. The other 25% is equally divided between math books and Cisco networking books.
I've been working on the Linux version of RoboEmu since 9:00 this morning. It's currently 9:10pm.
You have to go through two different boot managers to get to Win98 on my computer.
I caught myself writing an essay with parenthesis every few lines (thanks, Scheme!).
Dogbert is sitting on top of my monitor right now.
My computer's audio system is more powerful/has more speakers than my TV's.
I have a OI and an RC sitting next to me.
I use Pro/Desktop for everything.
I have a t-shirt from Metrowerks (the people who make CodeWarrior) that says, "Blood, Sweat, and Code."
I can name every option for every command in PBASIC--literally.
I'm taking math (Calc IV) and physics II next semester just for the fun if it.

oh, but are the computers in your house named after the dilbert characters? my win2k server is Dogbert (because it was the first server we set up, and since it "controlled" the network, what better name than Dogbert, who wants to control the world? :p). my second server, running debian (which i set up all by myself, along with some help from joe and jim :)) is called Catbert, because i needed another name, and i felt like keeping in theme with what my dad started. then, i was fooling around on my computer, and found where to set the computer name (XP has it all jumbled, so i never looked until i stumbled across it) and figured why not go with the flow, and i named it Ratbert. then, when i made it dual boot with gentoo, i also kept the ratbert thing. now, all i have to do is go around to the other computers and name them. just haven't gotten a chance yet :). and yes, that's probably the plan for my weekend.
My planned computer scheme is:
My current desktop is: g0d
My server (when I find a hdd) will be: j3sus
This laptop will be: m0ses
The computer after that will be g3nesis and so on.
I'm pretty much unreligious but bible names are cool! :)

Define geek......
Geek can be used in a negative or positive context. Most likely when used in a negative context it is referring to our "different" mindsets, hobbies, and long-terms goals. Because our interests are held in technology, science,math... the world around us and beyond us, rather than vainity issues, social issues, and whatever else we are held in a different light. Some may admire us, some may wonder how one person can be so intrigued by a moving green line, pages upon pages of code, equations, understanding the world around us that we cannot even see. We are different, but in our differences we help the world continue to grow, change, become inspired. Different is NOT bad. Be true to your self, be weird, be dorky, be crazy, be a geek. :)

Our winning Question was

I answered, "Rrrrrrrrip!"

I actually enjoyed diagramming sentences in the eighth grade.
I wrote my last novel in seven months in spite of four small children climbing all over me.
Before I lost my ability to compose, I could tell you what the lowest note was on the second inversion of a chord with the root being the dominant of any given major, minor, or modal musical scale.

im a geek because i once wrote an essay for school in perl script...
...and it actually parsed.
I'm on Cheif Delphi at 10:30 instead of sleeping,
I spend more time at robotics than school, sports, dates, and sleeping.
My music was enjoyed by all the adults on the team, wereas half of the team didn't recongnise it.
I spend my time trying to think of more ways i am a geek.
Well thats it for now, but there's no telling with what i can come up with.
Oh i also have a calender counting down the days till halo 3 comes out.
I carry robot parts into Arby's so I can discuss the design with one of the mentors while we eat.
My dad is a mentor but I still have to discuss the design with him over lunch. (and have the part with me)
I space out in class, waiting till I get home to download Inventor 11.
- I survived Algebra 1 by programming my TI83 all class
- I am starting a business selling/building computers and websites with the lead singer in my band
- I built a Cluster using 4 p2 266 MHz computers salvaged from my school
- I overclock to the max
- My computer case started as beige but now has UV reactive side windows and UV lighting
- I get more UV from my computer than the sun
- My desks currently hold: Checkbook(perfectly ballanced), EDU controller, embedded Linux board, CDRs, Magic Deck, the various parts of my server spread accross it, the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy(the full trilogy of 5), 5port switch, joystick, USB tablet, coffee, multitool thing, Box full of misc. electronics components, last 6 months of PC Magazine, Various heatsinks, Disks for 3ds9, Inventor 11 and MPLAB. And my soldering iron better be burried somewhere under that mess
- 2 monitors is better than one, now if only my desk could fit one more...
- I built a computer case entirely from Ducktape and papertowel rolls.
- My laptop is held together with ducktape

I've got some more!
I make programs on my TI83+ when I get bored in math class
My calculator is filled with programs because of 1, the only ones of which are actually somewhat useful are 3 and 4
My calculator has an uncompleated program that can calculate the score of an aliance for this year's game (not the best program, but oh well)
I spent a couple months of boring classes making an RPG on my calcultor (not as good as most of the actual games that are downloaded on my calculator, but it's still an acomplishment)
It is nearly impossable for my mom and siblings to do any work on a computer without asking me for help with something (even if it's only MSpaint)
I am constantly teaching my family how to do things on a computer (eg. keyboard shortcuts)
I try to find ways to do all my school projects on a computer
I have used screenshots and other pictures from Age of Mythology (and the expansion pack) in 3 of my projects this year (and gotten good grades on all of them)
I have used pictures from other video games in some projects too, but not as much
I can't get through one World Civilizations class without coneecting what we are learning to Age of Empires and/or Age of Mythology
When I'm with my freinds I call my flash drive my bling
I've replied to this thread twice within the past 24 hours

It took me about 3 days to build everything from source, configure it and make it suit me. Oh, and I stole the SUSE menu for my custom build too. :) I have my computer check mail for me, and in a few weeks I might try to get it to read it back to me too. Yes, I'm really that lazy that I need my computer to read my mail for me. :D
I also am coding a game from scratch for my senior project, although I lose points for using the rediculously easy Python language with pygame.

Straight out of Lavery's mouth...
"and, to be clear, the genus "geek" is not to be confused with the genus "dweeb" "Geeks" (and their associated species and subspecies, including "hardware geeks," "software geeks," and "nerds") are taxonomically different from the genus "dweeb" (and dependent species "dweebus" and "dorks")." -Lavery

I always tell my friends im a geek and not a nerd. They ask why, i said because nerds are the ones who play D&D. ( No offence :yikes: ) Ill proudly be a geek.
I'm a nerd/geek because I can combine the words Ninja and Nerd into 300 different combinations:D...Nerja...Nind...ect.:D

I actually have known it the other way; "geek" seems to have a negative connotation, whereas "nerd" has a cool factor to it. My OCCRA team has dubbed me "Turbo-nerd"--hey, that reminds me of "Turbo-tax"...awww, my nickname just lost its shine...:(
I would tend to say "geeks" are the ones who play D&D...and I play StepMania on the keyboard, does that count for anything? :D

No, it was actually meant as a joke towards myself; I don't think that it's strange to come into FIRST with programming experience, only because I did. Many, many teams are programmer-less because there isn't enough experience out there. Yay for being a nerd!:D

I've competed nationally in a Visual Basic category (but didn't place)
I've aspired to do something related to programming since I was nine
I recognized the Enterprise not by history, but by reference to Star Trek
I can name most of the authors to classic novels

I get offended when someone doubts my math.

-When ever I see a dinosaur/dragon I start humming/singing TROGDOR.
-I sleep with my thumb drive under my pillow (And it has a Wii strap on it.)
-I call my guildmates up more than friends/family.
-I'm in 11 school clubs, including Chess, Scrabble, Academic SpellBowl, and SADD.
-I do my friend's geometry homework for fun. (Proofs are the best. No joke.)

Hmmm let's see here.
-Every Thursday night in the summer I slowly roll down alleys in my neighborhood looking for trash people throw away. I have accumulated -1 computer which will be the brains of my CNC machine when I get some threaded rods, a blower fan which I put in my 100 inch projector, which then blew up 5 minutes after left a dense black fog in my basement. A guitar amp which was broken and will probably always be broken until I find a power supply for it, and tons of other stuff I'm forgetting.
-I built an 18 foot trebuchet, and am going to put a chainsaw motor on it to drive it around
-I built a 720p 100 inch projector using a computer LCD screen, and 400w MH light bulb. When I was building it I wired the AC wrong, and a cloud of black smoke filled the room again. But somehow it still works? (it came from the bulb too, and I still can not find another one of the same, C'mon Philips or EYE, help me out!).
-More things in my room are taken apart than fully assembled.
-On my computer desk I have a magnet from a never ending flash light, a s-video to rca jack, a potentiometer, LED's, minty boost, stepper motor, Zune 80+ Shure e2c headphones, various DC motors, 12v-> whatever voltage I want adapter, a few 2032 cell batteries, and a VISA gift card for being part of a contest (Thanks armstrong!)
-I bought an as-is subwoofer at the thrift store, replaced the internal amp with a receiver, and it pisses all the neighbors off.
-Usenet is amazing.
-I have a Roomba which I bought for $20.
-My xbox 360 no longer has a case, it is sitting on some plastic with a 120v bathroom blower fan on it. (but it's still dead!!)
-And a bit more I'm neglecting to put on.
