On Wednesday November 13th at 8pm EST, 60 Minutes II will do half of its show on another documentary on Dean Kamen. It will feature FIRST, the Segway, and other interesting facts.
There will be some footage from NYC and the Nationals. Not much I'm told, but hey it’s something.

To make it easy on all you people just read this part of the CBS webpage, but it explains what his invention is. Just making this easy on you all.:p
"Dean Kamen, the man who said his human transporter invention would change people’s lives, has a new invention that, he says, could change the world. The quirky inventor demonstrates for Rather how his latest device creates electricity without pollution and turns contaminated liquid into distilled drinking water. "

Agreed, or something with the sterling. I refraimed from posting this for sooooo long, but I was talking to someone VERY VERY close to Dean about his projects in general and they where like yeah the segway runs on the sterling and then they kinda stoped and turned a little red and started to choke a little on his/her words as he/she changed the subject subject.
team 121 should be highlighted check out the pic of them taping us http://www.rhodewarrior.org/2002/pictures/Nationals%20Pics/image/dsc00094.jpg
I'm tuned in. I like the line "you'll see it for the first time" in reference to robotics (I think). Heh. Yeah...that or about twice a week :)

I'm going to guess it's some sort of engine that takes it's fuel (whatever it might be) and after it "burns" it, the left over product is pure drinking water....
While i think this, i thought someone else already created this. Who knows, maybe deans version is better.

I hope you all noticed the BAE SYSTEMS logos in the opening of the show just now!
BAE SYSTEMS...I'm going to their regional. *ahem* Yeah. Hmm..you must love the way, that right before every commercial, they say "And when we come back, Dean's latest invention!"..or something to that effect. I'M ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT!
Aaron Lussier
13-11-2002, 20:54
There was a bunch of BAE logos when they were talking about England and the fighter planes.
P.S Hey Orge you elbowed the camera man, then they showed you being picked up by everybody on your team hehe it was pretty cool.
The sterling engine water purifyer was the thing we had never seen before? Hmm. I recall it on another tv show.
And yet again, no coverage for Chuck
what was the big invention? i turned it on when dean was talking about the stirling engine...
Clark Gilbert
13-11-2002, 20:55
Sweet....Not only is it a working sterling engine..it's portable!!.
Now i wonder if we can expect to see demos of this portable engine at Nats, maybe instead of drinking fountains they have sterling engines giving us water!
:D

That stirling engine is pretty sweet. I wouldnt mind that as a drinking fountain :) or a battery charger :D
He straight-out said that the sterling was going into the segway, well not straight out but he is like "or you could use it to charge a segway".

uh, technicly no, let Brandon decide.
THIS INCLUDES THE DISCUSSION OF WAREZ, FILE-SHARING PROGRAMS, CRACKING, AND ANY OTHER WAY OF STEALING SOFTWARE OR ANY OTHER COPYRIGHTED MATEIRAL.
True, Kaaza is a file-sharing program, but he was using it in a legal and legitimate way, not as a means to "steal software or any other copyrighted material."
hmmm ... I guess the show is copyrighted? But if it is fine to post it on a website, it is no less fine to put it on Kaaza.
I agree, let Brandon decide.

rrrr im mad. they didn't show anything of the many hours of footage they had of team 121. i even gave a big speech to them on strategy for a match and how no robot is good without good strategy. plus they put microphones on the drive team for the entire day of finals at nats. the only shot of me is the back of my head before we go out for a match.
they also showed the last match of divisional finals where we lose. then they show the other alliance celebrating.
Actually, courts found that file-sharing of television programs is beyond fair use policy. It's illegal.

I think they probably took a lot of footage of FIRST, and then had to condense it down to a few minutes of airtime. They had to take much more than needed, because they couldn't be sure what would be good material, and what would be bad.
Something similair happened to our team for an A&E special. We had people interviewed, and our pits filmed, and the only thing that was shown was footage of us deflating one of the big balls in a practice match (2001 game).
I actually kinda liked that though :)

I'm just as frustrated as Rick. In NYC and the Nationals they shot a lot of footage of us. Which I estimated was a little over an hour. This included interviews, matches, and couple of other things. Where they going to use all of it, of course not, but we least expected that some of it would be used. We gave them a lot of time talking to them and all. They were in contact with one of adult advisors asking for stuff, they knew they weren't going to use.
Don't get me wrong, the segment is good, but I feel really cheeped out by CBS, by not telling us that all the time we spent wouldn't be on there.
Oh course time is limited, and you can't have everything you shoot.
However as a message about FIRST, I thought it was really good.
A file takes about 10min to circulate over Kazaa, so it should be ready in about 5min,
Still looking for people to host.....

I didn't like how they described the game - "The challenge this year was to load as many balls as possible into a goal" or something to that effect. They completely missed the "Zone Zeal" part.
That sterling engine is incredible... I want to make one!
Or take one apart. S'all good.

Heh. I'd have it on my FTP but I really don't feel like wasting that much bandwidth :) (Wasting in the _best_ kind of way :P) If you can't find it any more or just want it really slowly...email, PM, or IM me.
If any of the previous hosts don't work, you guys can get it at my ftp (just I'm hosting it from my cable modem, so I'm capped to a total maximum upload of 50kb/s)
ip: 24.186.144.31
port: 21
username: FTPuser
pw: easy
if you can't connect, try turning PSAV or Passive FTP mode explicitly on or explicitly off - I have a shiezer router. Look in your FTP's help on how to do that (if you HAVE to use ie, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > bottom of the Browsing category).
I have Tom's 40 meg WMA and Matt is uploading his 300-some meg mpg (should be done in about 3 hours).
About the entire legality thing, my point of view is that CBS is one of the major networks, so if you have TV, you probably get CBS. CBS may even be broadcast by antenna in some cities, so it would be completely free in those cases. The program itself isn't produced by some 3rd party (i.e. hollywood), it's produced by CBS. And no measures have been taken to hide that it's by CBS or hide that it's from 60 minutes. It's being used almost like a bibliography. Because of this, I feel strongly that by hosting a mirror, I'm doing nothing illegal - it's meant to be a service to those who happened to miss the clip. If other powers feel otherwise, then censor this message.
Ooh. A 300 meg MPG? Would anyone like to up that to me? :) Message me somehow. I can allow HTTP/FTP uploads/downloads.

Hey, this is my first attempt at using the Record function as more than TIVO on my computer.
I've got the file, it's in MPG 2 file standard, and it's 3.6 gigs. (Yes, gigs)
How'd you get it down to 44 without the quality going to crap?
I tried Real video, but my video program only lets me export at 120x80. (Ususally i do 320x2someting at work)
I'm cranking it out in WMV now (Since it's already posted, i'm not bothering to share mine I'll see how that comes out for experimentation purposes.
Just so you know, i edited out all the commericals and left the opening peice in.
:-)
I was going to try DIVX, but that means I gotta find the installer again.. *sigh*
Hmm... Just figured it out. I've got the freebie version of Ulead Video Studio 5.0
it's slightly..... limited. more features, upgrade to pro, or goto the new version 6.0.
Grrr..
Oh well, i guess it's time to take advantage of Adobe's Software at home liscense. (If you have a liscense to use something at work, you can take it home and use it. Seriously, it's on there web site somewhere, one of htere salesman told me) Premeire is still the best.

I just used the movie maker thats built into windows XP - nothing fancy - to get it smaller i cut down the resolution to 320x240 - and i cut down the audio quality - it comes out to be about 384 kbps.

If you want to use Divx... just get the codec at www.divx.com.
Then visit the Divx software page to download one of the encoding applications.

You'll need either FlaskMPEG or XMPEG to encode it.

Did anyone else notice Dean's team number in the baseball game? Well if you didn't it was e^(i*pi). For those of you who don't know that equals -1. Leave it to Dean to have that as a team number.

-1 huh?? Maybe 1 would be more appropriate. Does this have some hidden meaning. Maybe Dean thinks that FIRST (1) is going to the negative side or something.
Just a thought, I'm probably just reading into it too much.

yea you are just reading into it too much. If you don't believe that e^(i*pi) is -1 then watch the Simpsons Halloween Special where Homer walks into the wall behind the book shelf to a 3rd dimension. In there it also states that it is -1. We all know Simpsons can't be wrong.
Okay, people, pet peeve time again:
It's a STIRLING engine. . . named after its inventor, Robert Stirling. Stirling. Sterling is a type of silver or fork and spoon or something valueless. Stirling is someone's last name. Please, at least give this guy the respect he deserves by spelling his last name correctly.
My team was filmed considerably during the NYC Regional as well. I didn't see us in any footage whatsoever. Whatever. There are more important things in life than being in television. Taking 60 minutes of footage is, by no means, extensive. They rarely will post long clips of anyone who's not well known.
Now, because it wouldn't be right if I didn't post at least one controversial topic -
Am I the only person that feels that, sometimes, Dean sounds very arrogant about certain things? I don't feel like listing particular examples, but sometimes, I'm a bit shocked by his tone. It's very condescending, seemingly.
Now, I've met Dean before at a few different instances, and I've never gotten that impression in person. . . and I've managed to talk with him at reasonably length, too. Maybe it's the direction of the interviews or something.

Leave it to M. Krass to make things a bit more colorful.
I have met Dean as well.
My opinion is that it's not arrogance, but nerves. Leave him alone eh?

Oh, certainly. I have a lot of respect for what he's managed to do, and I've had nothing but really pleasant, interesting conversations with him.
I don't mean to imply that he is genuinely arrogant. Maybe it is more of a function of the presentation than anything else? But, he seems to be someone who doesn't tolerate a lot of deviance or beating around the bush when it comes to discussing things that are important to him. That's fair, of course, but maybe he could handle keeping things 'on topic' more diplomatically?
...Don't you love incomplete thoughts?
Joe Matt
14-11-2002, 18:26
I think it's attatude over TV and the media, how they treated him with Ginger and such. It's not his nature to be arrogant. I think he just hates the media and TV.

Without making dig up my Math books from 3 or 4 years ago, I believe -1 is an imaginary number in some mathmatics. I believe it's discrete math, or calculus III. It's been awhile. I think I'm thinking of the square root of -1, now that i"ve been thinking about it for a minute or so.
dk5sm5luigi
14-11-2002, 19:07
yes the square root of -1 is imaginary. if you look in e^(i*pi) you will notice it includes i which is equal to the square root of -1.
I woudn't say that he's conscending or arrogant...
I would rather say he's focused and belevolent. If you look at the answers he gave as Mr Rather was questioning him they were rather brilliant even though they were not thouroughly contemplated. These are straight-out questions, I doubt 60 minutes would tell what they are gonna ask him or give him second-chance responses. It's not journalistic.
I'd say he's a better speaker than most individuals today, especially better than our own monkey president.
Albeit his tactlessness at some topics, he gets the point accross and only the point unlike some individuals these days. In a world where you are overwhelmed with so much useless information, it's nice to get the point for a change.

Even if he's Republican, he's still Dean and has more morals and hear than most Dems do.
I'll vote for hime (since I can in Sept of 2004).

"Tapes of the CBS 60 Minutes II can be ordered by dialing 800-848-3256 - for a transcript dial 800-777-TEXT. You can also view this info on the CBS.website. Go to CBS.com and from the drop-down menu choose 60 minutes II. It will load a page with the top story on Dean entitled "The Great Inventor." On the right hand side of the page there are links, the last of which is for tapes and transcripts.
