Robert Hogg

My team is second year now and we've decided to change our name to something that will be remembered throughout the ages of FIRST. So we're checking out great names to give us ideas.
- What are your favorite team names of all-time?
- What are your favori te robot names of all-time?
Thanks!

Anything unique and identifiable is great. My personal favorite team name is Bomb Squad. I wish I had thought of that. The idea for our name came from our school mascot, a panther.
Here's a few of my favorites, in the order in which I thought of them:
BeachBots (But I am a little biased)
Bomb Squad (But these days they have to be careful where they wear their uniforms)
The Muses (from an all-girl school, very appropriate)
Schmobotics (Team 1135, that's why you haven't heard of them, yet)
Cordzilla (a very old team)
Gila Monsters (I love lizards!)

No question about it. Wildstang of team 111.

I am very biased but my favorite is:
Code Red Robotics #639 :p
Some other favorites:
Gompei #190 (years 1999 and before)
ThunderChickens #217
Ok ok these are just some of my favorite teams in general but they have cool names :)
This has been done before.

Hmm, 2 years ago would be 2000, it says their first year was 2001, so I would say no :D

Well, if you say that "this year" is the upcoming 2003 season, then "last year" was 2002 and "2 years ago" would be 2001. Thus, it would be possible.

Y'know, I think its sad how words today have "double meanings"- I mean, look at Team 643... Imagine if the company that created the double meaning instead named its product "Apple"...
And no I am not just saying this because my school's mascot is a trojan..
But I gotta say the best name is Miss Daisy.. People were holding up posters last year at Philly's regional saying "Miss Daisy is Hot"-

Placebo is was definatly a good "team" or "robot" name.
Others not mentioned that I have liked are:
Technonuts robot named Nutty (biased)
Gompei (also Biased)
Duct Tape Bandits
U-FO
LOL!
Our team name is actually NEW Apple Corps.
TOBOR is our robot name. We have 5 TOBOR robots, and 1 robot before that.
What made you think of TOBOR IV? I wasn't there that year, but I know about the "knocking the clock off the wall" incident and stuff. Tobor IV (4) is our 2001 robot (TOBOR is ROBOT spelled backwards).

Last year, I really liked Team 173's name, "RAGE". I just found out that RAGE stands for "Robotics And Gadget Engineering".
Does anyone happen to know what S.P.A.M. stands for? (Their web site is down.)
Have to say that "Wildstang" is a great name. Anyone know the story behind that name?
By the way, we were "The Azgardians" last year. Normally it is spelled "Asgardians" in English, from Norse mythology meaning those who live is Asgard, the home of Norse Gods and slain heroes. This year, we decided to change it to something more recognizable. Also it was a little too close to "#%#%#% guardians" for some people which is the reason for the "z". We didn't want to be thought of as people who just guard their own #%#%#%'s. However, I would appreciate some objective feedback. What do you'all think of "The Azgardians" as a team name?

Thank you very much for your feedback to my survey question above.
Basically no one said anything, but that in itself was a statement, especially since there were a number of communications regarding other team's names. Therefore I was able to deduce that the good people who frequent this forum were not enamored with our (now) old team name.
Hopefully our new name will be an improvement.

It's funny to me that several people mentioned they like the name SPAM - just about every year we have debated about changing the name to something more "competitive robotic" sounding like Demolition Squad or WildStang. We didn't discuss it this year - I guess it kind of grows on you. Like a fungus.
If FIRST goes fully international, I'd love to see a team called "Youth in Asia", my all time favorite double meaning.

Well, I waited two days and Isabelle never responded. So here goes.
S.P.A.M. stands for:
S outh Fork High School
P ratt & Whitney
A nd
M artin County High School
The name was thought up by the students during one of the first meetings in 1998. Or was it '97?
It does kind of stick with you after a while.

I have to say that SPAM is definitely a name that grows on you, as are Cheesy Poofs, ComBBat, and Moe. Honestly, i think if i were team 180 i would have done a play off the team number, but it's too late for that now. Countless roboticist souls would go into eternal mourning were SPAM to change their name.

oh warren... i was at that fated evening 5 years ago... has it been *that* long!?
we were all sitting in the south fork library and one of the first things on the agenda was to pick a team name. of course there were the usual variations on the theme of combining school mascots (this eventually became our very first team logo, though i like the "SuperSPAM" logo much better). Ti-Dogs was offered up as a cross between the Tigers and the Bulldogs. i offered Bull-gers (say it out loud a few times... i promise, it's funny) some folks mentioned names based on 180 being a half circle, but when it came to voting, those lost votes for pure predictability. someone suggested an acronym of the 2 high schools like SAM. then one of the folks in the back of the room called out "What about Pratt? they're in this, too!"
then someone called out "OK, then. How 'bout SPAM?"
you ever get one of those moments when everyone in a room catches on at the same time? well, that's what this was like... all the lightbulbs popped at the same time. the vote was nearly unanimous. and SPAM was born!
*sigh* on a total side note, i'd like to thank 180 for 5 awesome years (and what a way to spend the last one, eh?). it was truely one of the best chapters of my life so far, and i wish you guys continued success not only for this year, but for many years to come!
i'd also like to thank team 1083 for welcoming me this year! let's rock that UCF regional!! right guys!?

I like the sound of that, especially the "unanimous" part. We just went through the same process but the (now) 4 schools on our team just didn't seem to provide a good acronym. We tried.
However, this thread was helpful and inspirational. Who knows, we may have to have another go at it next year, but for this year, Team 980 (formerly The Azgardians (those who live in Asgard, home of Norse gods and slain heroes) is now to be known as "the Thunderbots". (I guess the Norse gods have been throwing around Thunderbolts.)
Anyway, thank you for your reply's to this thread. When I hear some of these names, I will enjoy them even more now.
Personally, I am still envious of names like "Heat Wave", R.A.G.E. and "Wildstang". But "Thunderbots" will do.
For those in the south west, see you at the regionals, and for all the other teams, hope to see you at the Championships again this year (if we qualify).

a number of my favorites have already been mentioned, but the list wouldn't be complete without adding 668 - "The Apes of Wrath" from Pioneer High School in San Jose.
I'm also a fan of those simple yet catchy names which teams have been able to market/brand to the point where everyone knows them (quality robots each year helps also) such as Gila Monsters, GRT, and the BeachBots.

A couple of posts listed MOE as a good name, but MOE like many other names is an acronym. MOE comes from "Miracle of Engineering". This is a play on words from DuPont's corporate slogan "Miracles of Science". The team is called the Miracle Workerz.

I would definitely have to say that the teams that really stick out in my mind aren't always the powerhouse teams, the teams that have been in the FIRST circle since the beginning, or the teams that win the competitions. The FIRST teams I think of (no pun intended) are the ones that present themselves well and still manage to pull off great machines. Many teams come up with great names, such as the ThunderChickens, the Penguins, and the Killer Bees, while others have trademarks such as wearing tie-dyed shirts year after year or wearing hats from Cat in the Hat. These teams, I believe, not only put hard work into their machines but also spirit into their team. These are the teams that build for six weeks and live for the competition, the moment of robot truth- and then wait for more than half the year to do it all again. These types of teams are what bring high schoolers into the FIRST program. This is what kids look at and say, "hey, this is something that I want to be involved in." These teams bring inspiration, enthusiasm, and fun to the world of FIRST.

Um, I don't see any ROOKIE TEAM NAMES HERE. How about a few of them?
Hailfire: There are most likely no rookie team names here because you are that. Rookies. you havent gotten any exposure at competitions, etc. My guess is that once other teams start to see you around, you will be recognized, and then people will know your name.

This was a team I had a few years back....great name. Our sponsor that year was a company called "Quantum Consultants", and so our name was 'The Quantum Mechanics'. We wore garage mechanic uniforms. They were really too hot for Florida, and the kids didn't even get the quantum Mechanics thing. No physics or chemistry students in the group, I guess.

Very biased, I've always liked Royal Fusion (1999-2001).
Not because of the name, because it's actually quite dumb, but because of what we did with it. Sparkling capes, Team Spirit awards 2 out of 3 years (the 3rd year we got sportsmanship, which is close enough), our newsletters, and the bonds some of us had with Purdue's team, Wildstang, Toga Party, and The Feds, among others. We had a very close team bond that continues into our post-robotic lives.
Many of our alumni actually don't like "Thunderchickens" as a name, though it does have a strong marketing potential. Sorry for the nastalgic ramblings.

i like the martians. maybe i just like the familiar green......
SPAM is probably one of my favorite names, also. I like the Kinetic Knights(pretty sure) and the Omega team - I forget what their real name & numbers were, but they had an Omega (also an Ohm symbol) and were called resistance, or something...My memory doesn't hold very true.
Oh yeah, and I always thought that the Robo ticks had a clever play on words.
ComBBAT is also an acronym- it stands for
Boeing
Brevard Community College
Astronaut High School
Titusville High School
The Com part though...I dunno, we could have just been BBAT but then we would only get the Bat symbols and stuff, and have no explaination for the Camoflauge.

Thinking back since our rookie year... BUZZ, Homer (i'd love to see a team name "Milhouse"), MOE (who can forget "MOE Sticks"), cheesy poofs, the FEDS, ThunderChickens, CHAOS, SPAM, . I miss MAK's mascot "MAK on Crack" (un-official of course). wouldn't it be nice if the team information included the name... so many teams I can only remember by name.

Y'know, I think its sad how words today have "double meanings"-
Definately. Our team name is The Revolution, and our old motto was "The Revolution is coming..." but as of September 11, 2001 we couldn't do that anymore because of the sposed 'double meaning' it had because of the attacks on the US. I still like that motto, I wish we could still use it, but hey, oh well.

Alltime favorite is a tie between devil duckies (because of those awesome ducks they give out) and thunderchickens. I remember my first nationals ('05) and i had snuck onto the floor (like 20 ft away from the einstein field) to watch the finals... I was just amazed by the thunderchickens ... the shirts rock too along with the driver with the dyed hair.

Oh man. I can't believe the WireStrippers made it on here.
I'm the one who came up with the name a loooong time ago. We wanted to be the FemBots, but our high school director (principal) said it was too suggestive. I submitted "the Wirestrippers", intending to be tongue-in-cheek, but she naively said "oh, that's great!" and approved it. And so it stuck. *groan*
But yeah. Team 677 from Columbus School for Girls in Ohio. Woo boy. I wouldn't recommend suggestive names to future all-girls' teams... it's given us a lot of problems in the past :(

Okay, I love our team name: The Royal Robotrons and we named our robot Buckbot after our fave teacher. You might want to just personalize everything and name your team or robot after people who have close contact with your team.

I thought RadioActive Pajama Monkeys (RPM) was kind of funny but clever with its acronym. I still like the Thunder Bots though. Simple and rememberable.

"Athenian Robotics Collective" (ARC)
I don't know their number...
There name sounds very official... and socialist...
I like it :D
Another cool one is 968: "Robotics Alliance of West Covina"
again very official. It's not just a team... It's an alliance!
And of course there's Exploding Bacon, we can't forget them! :p

I can honestly say I like Division By Zero the best without being biased, since i Didn't help choose our team's name, and I think it is one of the most creative names out there.
Of course, that being said I also prefer the Division BY Chicken, Division By Chicken Element, and Division By SparX. Pretty much anything with division...
