Well, for me, it was 4 years ago. It was during the GLR, and our team was out. We where going for the bar, and grabbed, but everyone thought we broke. The announcer, our partners, and our opposing alliances. "They broke! They Broke!" I can still rember that. Well, we defended the ramp, and 30 seconds later, we where hanging! Everyone's jaw dropped. We had used some string to haul us up, but allow us to defend the ramp. Good times... :yikes:

MOE vs. 3.0
BEAUTIFUL. Two three goal grabbers smashed toghther.

MOE and 3.0 are totaly stationary. The goals are in the middle and the two other alliance partners are running around. MOE's PARTNER GETS STUCK! Yes, their partner gets stuck on their wings. 15 secs to go. MOE launches their tether and makes it. 3.0 launches their thether and makes it. 3.0 Alliance partner makes it in the end zone. 10 vs 20. BUT MOE is DQ'ed and 3.0 wins with 60 QP.

I know the last time this was brought up, people kinda got ticked off, but I just think this was a great match of the 2002 season.
BattleCry 3 Final Match
Our team is with 190, WPI, a wikked strong 2 goal grabber. we start the match with the usual, going up the side of the field, maybe gettting about 17 balls. Meanwhile, Rage 173 the National champs are doing the same thing, and maneuvering for a goal. we have already dumped. We have two goals in our zone, and we want the third. Our coach says to our driver to go get the goal. Rage has a load of balls as we go to do this, and are maneuvering their arm upwards for a dump. we come speeding for that goal. We accidently hit 173's arm, and tip them over. One thing about their dumper was that everytime they do dump, the arm changes their whole centre of gravity. The crowds feaking out, each team is freaking out. Our driver is hysterical thinking we might be DQ'd. Well, there is nothing we can really do about that, mind as well finish the match. Our driver then goes and pushes Rage into our home zone. Mean while 173's partner is trying to mess with the goals, its too late, we drive back to the home zone, 190 deploys their tether. What a match. It also was my first time operating, I was psyched. We win 89 to 0.

I remember team 66's (the team I was working with that year) machine had a similar design...I unfortunately wasn't there during practice at GLR, but I heard that the arena suddenly got very quiet as our claw disconnected from the deployment arm, and then we winched ourselves up the ramp and put us into scoring position...

Two years Ago. 4 team alliance. 4 scoring robots, 2 goals on the balanced ramp. Big balls on top. Time left on the clock!
National scoring record!

What Chris is talking about is the very FIRST 710 match at the 2001 Midwest regional with the alliance of 234, 71, 111, and 269. This was defently an exciting match to watch and be a part of it. I still cringe every time I watch it because I was SO close to spoiling the match by tipping the goal over. You can watch the match here: http://www.wildstang.org/2001/video/wsvideo.htm

Personally, my best FIRST moment was during the 2000 SPBLI Long Island Regional. We won the local regional as a rookie team!!
We were the alternate bot in the three team alliance and one of our partners was damaged beyond repair. So we got to go in and play for the best of three final.
We won the first heat. We also won the second by having our bot 1/2" off the carpet and on the ramp, giving us the necessary points to take "all the marbles."
To date, that was my favorite game. All four robots gnashing to the ramp and reaching for the bar in the last 15 seconds of the competition was AWESOME! (This also happened before BattleBots was even on the air.)

I agree with David on that one. The first 710 match was definitely awesome. As for the funniest match I've ever seen, it was this match (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=107188#post107188). I think even had I been on one of the other teams I would've thought this was funny. Although the funniest part is the way John described it in that post...."a pet-hotbot."

2000 UTC New England Regional Championship final round. 131 and 237's opposing alliance had 2 or 3 more points than they did in their trough. The rounds were tied 1-1 I believe. With ten seconds to go 131 starts digging for one of the opposing alliances 5 point black balls. Three of four seconds to go in the final match they steal the 5 point black ball and win the regional. The crowd went chaotic. Then it was time for National's.........
2001 MidAtlantic Regionals, last round.
The final two alliences were perfectly matched. This went on for ever! Every time a score was posted the next round beat it. It just kept going back and forth getting higher and higher.
It ended with a nearly perfect tie, decided by the last tie breaker in the book. The refs acutally had to check the rule book, and for 5 minutes the entire crowd was either holding thier breath, or going nuts. It was incredible.
There couldn't be a harder fought final.

I believe it was actually broken with the first or second tie breaker (average score in the elimination round) not the last one. Still very impressive finish.

I can't remember too much detail about this match but it was at Rumble at the Rock (when it was still outside). It was down to the final matches when one of the teams fell down and broke. They took their five minute time out to fix the robot and still didn't have time. Then Mike Bastoni asked the audience if we should let them have more time and we all cheered yes. Granted they came back into the game with only a driveline but it was very exciting seeing a team become destroyed and then come back with the permision of the audience to play again. This really shows the spirit of first.
Two matches I really remember:
1999 - Chicago - The Chief dancing with another robot with the Puck. Seriously looked like they were doing a tango or something...
2001 - Nationals - Semi-Final Round, Team Hammond squeaks out a win against team 217- Royal Fusion, because 217 missed the time multiplier by 3 SECONDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

2000 Motorola Midwest Regional
In the Elims Round, the 45, 47, 111 allience was losing late in the match, until Our driver went on one side of the opposing allience goal, while the chief was on the other side attempting to get balls out of the other goal. Our driver gave a little push to the 5 point black ball and the Chief sucked out that black ball. Our allience won that match by 1 point and we moved on and then won the regional.

Personaly my greatest first moment was when we were in Philly last year and won the final round by 1 point. It was just so excited because it was our first, first place win ever at a regional.

Skitzosmurf already said one of my favorite moments.
Another one from last year was in the Archimedes division during qualifying. Ricksta121, our strategy guy, went around telling everyone on the team that he had figured out a way to score 180qp pts in the next match. He explained how we would go about doing it and we didnt think it was possible. We knew we had to score at least 60pts for our alliance and then go and help them. So we did this and we scored 66pts for oursel and we then gave our opponents points by going into their endzone. At the end of the match we were short because even though we gave our opponent points it didnt add up to the 60 they needed. Then all of a sudden the announcer came on saying that this was the highest score ever. He then went to explain that our opponents tether went under a goal. No one on our alliance had even noticed. The score...198pts for us. Ricksta121 was right.
And to think.. we gave them points during the match.

This was an exciting one. Listen to the video and you will hear a collective inrush of breath as the crowd realized what had occurred.
My personal favorite dates back to when it was legal to call a timeout before a match started if you couldn't get your robot working. Under "gracious professionalism" at it's greatest hour, one team after another called their official time out in sequence to allow all four teams to help fix a broken robot and get it on to the field to play. I feel if you came to play, I'm going to help you make it so.
Thanks Dave and Chris for the reminder!

I definetly think that the 2000 game had some great moments, the last few seconds of that match...4 robots reaching for that bar on that little ramp..WHEW..my favorite thing was at Mayhem in Miami we had a kind of the hill match. 6 robots fighting for the top of the ramp...what was intense, i think 3 of the robots broke thier lens covers in that one. Also in that year the finals were great, seeing that HUUUGE arm just taking balls as they pleased

My favorite would have to be River Rage 2001 It was the finals With 151, 190, and 121 in one alliance agaist another really good alliance( soory I was never good with numbers) Any ways the high score kept going back and forth, higher and higher still, back and forth, finally after about 3 or four matches, 151 had two goal on the bridge and just enough balls to win in one goal, but there was this one black ball right on the top of the goal, if that ball had fallen we would have lost :ahh: It was very exciting
My greatest FIRST moment was being on stage at nationals (1997) and then being interviewsed by NESN after we got back.

This may not be one of FIRST greatest moments but it is my most memorable. The year is 2000 at nationals. My team (team 60) is doing an amazing job and are seeded like number 5. We are in a mad scramble looking around for who we went to pick, because we have been super busy all day with our robot. We make up a short list of teams we want to pick with our first pick. I belive the list was about 8 teams. We figured we would be good with that so we start looking for our second teir teams. We get our list finalized with minutes to spare before we have to go on stage. My best friend goes up on stage fully prepared, or so we thought. The rest of our team returns to the stands to watch.
We are all sitting in the crowd hoping that cheif delphi will slide down and we can grab them as a partner. While hoping for this we all were pretty sure it wasn't going to happen, because in our oppion Cheif Delphi was the best bot out there. The first pick goes and doesn't pick cheif delphi, we as suprised be sure they will get picked before our pick is up. One more pick, once again not cheif delphi. Our team is getting more and more stoked as they picks fall. Finally its our turn to pick and I am SCREAMING at my team that were going to get delphi!!!! There is no way that we can be beat with cheif delphi on our team!!!!! Our driver goes up to the mic and announces that team 60 would like to choose team 47 as an alliance. My team is going nuts in the stands! The representative from delphi gets to the mic and says that team 47 declines our offer......................... stunned.
In the space of 2 seconds myself and my entire team goes from the highest cloud to the deepest pit. We had no clue what to think. So moving on our driver picks another team....... Declined again. I am sure most of you know how the rest of the story goes. I think we picked like 5 teams and were declined by every one. We had no clue what to think. Our driver is out of 1st teir teams. He picks our first 2nd teir team and finally someone accepts. Then on our third pick out driver pulls some team number out of his hat that we have NEVER heard. We are all freaking out and we talk to him and he says that he didn't wanna pick another 2nd teir team so he just picked on that he had seen in a match earlier in the day. Team 173 we were all amazed that he could come up with that up on stage and everything. Team 173 ended up being an amazing partner and played ever finals match we played.
Then one of the low lights in team 60's history starts to unfold. You see we had this really smart idea that is we took an administrator with us to florida that we would get more school support. So that year we decided to take our Vice Principal. Well this brain surgen decides that it would be a great idea to tell cheif delphi what a huge mistake they had made. So he proceeds to team 47's pit without saying anything to anyone and tells them what iddiots they are, and how we are going to make them pay. All of this while the rest of people in the team that have any sense are getting ready for the quarter final match. None of us heard about this until after our quarterfinal match. Of course we are all dumbfounded on how a person could do something like that. Our drive team and coaches set out to find team 47 and hope they will accept our apoligy. Once we did find them they were all very nice and accepted our apoligy and told us how they understood that some people just get caught up in the moment.
So there you go, not my favorite moment in my first career, but by far the most memorable.

It was during the 2001 season. RAMTECH 59 was in the Galileo Division. We had to go back and forth competing with the other Galileo finalist because they kept on out beating our score. Yet in the end our alliance came out on top and we won the division. Took about 3 our 4 matches... One of the most intense feelings I have ever experienced.!!

I think one of our team's greatest moments was at Nationals this year. It was our first match on Friday, and we were up against two regional champions. Well, about 20 seconds into our match, our partner's battery got disconnected and they died on the field! We wound up winning the match anyway, by ourselves, after pushing our dead partner back for an extra ten points - it was great :D

In my opinion, the greatest series of matches was the finals in 1997, the inner tube game, between us and Chief Delphi. Delphi knew our opening move was to rush to the human and take on three tubes. Our scouting saw Delphi block the human against the Huskies in the semis (was on a different stage back in those days) so we had a pretty good idea what they were going to do. We choose not to beat ourselves up trying to get to the human, so at 3,2,1, go Delphi moved the ten feet to get in front of our human and stopped. We move to the center of the field and stopped. Both robots just sat there. Here we were in the finals for the National championship and neither robot was doing anything! Dean ran over to the sidelines and signaled Eric to come over to check if the Chief was broken. A ref came over to our station and asked if we were broken. As the time ticked down the emotions became more intense. All three matches went that way. The middle match had the two robots, each with three tubes, dueling over the goal and at the end everyone had to wait for a referee's decision who won. In the last match Delphi waited until about 20 seconds left before moving out.
All three matches were shown on the ESPN special that ran that year. (if anyone would like a copy of the ESPN program, let me know)
A very vivid FIRST memory.
Bill Beatty
Just trying to think of one is impossible. Being on stage against Beatty, as Bill has stated was unbelieveable. Then again, so was the Match at the Great Lakes Finals in which I witnessed the loudest simultaneous crowd gasp when we sucked balls out of our opponents scoring bin and swerved over to ours to deposit them just in time. That was against Pontiac Northern. Or the year that we won 3 regionals. Or the fantastic dance that we had with Motorola Wildstag the year of the puck. Or the year we went to New York and won the Spirit Award. Far too many close calls and outcomes determined by points, or seconds. Far too many good and bad memories to just pick one.

I have a couple of favorite moments:
1) Second match in the finals at the KSC Regional: the other alliance had just won the 1st match and at the beginning of the second one we DOMINATED and the announcer said, "Blue alliance dominating early!" One of our allies was SPAM (180) and they were pushing Heatwave (312) out of the scoring position and the announcer says, "SPAM! SPAM! SPAM!" Then, towards the end he said, "Metal in Motion clearly in control!!"
2) Thrid match in the finals at the KSC Regional: about 15-20 seconds into this match Heatwave (312) went dead! I think determination and the simple issue of Heatwave not changing the battery won us the regional!!!!
3) One of the matches at the St. Louis Regional: Metal in Motion (also beating Heatwave at this different regional :) ) dragged 2 goals, the Heatwave robot, and another robot at least halfway across the field. Both alliances were DQed for tearing the carpet *cough* it was 312 *cough*hehe, but it was definately the BEST play of all. :)

Well, there are A LOT of those "FIRST moments", for sure!
I remember awesome things I'll never forget, things that made me freeze and stare, things that made me scream in a crazy way and some emotions I couldn't explain.
Ok, you want me to tell THE BEST moment.
When we won the 2001 Nasa Langley Regional in VCU was the greatest moment for me (and maybe to some people in my team too). To be precise, the time when the final score appeared on the screen. I liked that year specially because I participated more on the robot design and was the human player. That was the first time we won a regional, and to do that we went through so many difficult situations, and we were representing ourselves, our team, our school, our state and our country.
Maybe after that some people lost that "underdog" idea about us. We were so excited. I lost my voice in few minutes, called home to tell my mother (there was a problem with the internet connection just before the finals) and after that so many good things happened.
I admit participating is MUCH more important that winning, but you asked for ONE moment only.

My favorite memory was the the 2001 Nationals, all of a sudden a huge rainstorm came out of nowhere. It rained so much that the floor of the pits (the grey plastic) actually was floating and you could feel it moving under you. The water then came up through the pit floors, i still remember having to scramble and move our stuff off the floor, while running to matches.

By the way, Chief Delphi's dance partner was Wildstang. That year both robots had "crab" steering that allowed them to rotate the "puck" several times without stopping. That also was Team 217's rookie year. We were ranked 4th in that competition.

for anyone who wasnt around, that was the year we had to lift the floppys 8ft off the floor or something for them to be worth 3 points.... well with a whole stack of them, the mechanisms to do that were around 13ft..... 13ft high and under 130lbs is not a good combination
what was the result? 3 of the 4 robots on the field went over... a huge arm almost took out the camera man (it was sticking out maybe 5 ft).... and 2 of the robots were hanging way into the crowd and over the top of the drivers
it was a complete disaster and im sure thats why none of the field challenges have required that much hight since
if ANYONE remembers this and has a video PLEASE send it to me.... i would love to see it again

If it's the same match I remember, it was my high school team Truck Town Terror (team 68) and Robbe Xtreme (team 56) against two opponents I no longer remember in an elimination round (quarter or semi) match.
The strategy was for us to control the puck and for Robbe to gather floppies. We grabbed one floppy, pushed the puck to one side of the playing field in our scoring zone, and held it in place. Robbe drove up onto the puck with a basket full of floppies and was raised it up to scoring position toward the middle of the match near the edge of the field. One opposing team tried (in vain) to push the puck into their scoring zone. The other team drove onto puck and raised their basket full of floppies under Robbe, picking up their entire lift system. The whole basket flipped over the side of the playing field and dangled there. T3 then attempted to climb onto the puck, pushing against the team with floppies up in the air. The fight was a stalemate until we starting lifting our basket, which in the struggle for the puck, was pushing against their lift system. This slowly pushed their entire robot over, lift crashing out of the playing field in the corner and narrowly missing a camera man. Our basket and lift slammed into the human player station as our robot tipped over as well, but stayed within the field and off the ground with no time left on the clock. Final score, 2-0 (1 floppy off the ground * 2 for the puck in our scoring zone) in favor of T3 and Robbe. Robbe gave our 'bot the nickname "Killdozer" after that match.
Probably my favorite match ever. I only wish I had video of it.
Another great match at the same regional (which won us play of the day) showed the pulling power of T3. The puck had been pushed so hard into the field barrier that one of the caster wheels hopped up and over the 2-by-4 edge of the playing field. The puck was being held in this position by both opposing robots as our alliance partner sat onto of the puck. We were able to pull the puck back into our scoring zone for the win, horribly mangling our hook in the process (good thing we had spares).
So many other good T3 memories...
Shearing a 5/8" tool steel shaft in 2000 after replacing the 'weak' pin with a steel bolt and joking that we'd shear the shaft before the fastener is another good one.

Last year in the semifinals on einstien 60 against beaty in the first match beatty pusshed the bionic bulldog we called thunder back into beatty's scoring zone, after the patch a baffled 60 examined our robot to figure out why for the first time ever thunder had been pushed it was obvious, an arm was broken and 60 lost the weight advantage. After swapping both arms on the robot on that Musty frying pan of a stage called einstein My co driver and I placed thuder back on the field for match number two. this match thuder would not be affected by the might of beatty awesome walker insted we held our own and with 30 seconds left our allience died mid field. when the buzzer sounded we examined the field and found the score to our liking, 31-30 or so we thought when the judges counted the score was beatty 32 kingman 31 heart break

glad u like it
My best memory of FIRST was our alliance with Chief Delfi and technoKats in 2000 for The Midwest Regional against Baxtor Bomb Squad. These teams performed the most fluid motions I had ever seen and the greatest syncronization I had ever seen. With delfi's crab and big huge dino head accumulator they seemed unstopable. That has always been my favorite robot of all time. Good Job Chief!!!!
