View Full Version : PBASIC 2.5 Editor: How Much Longer?
How much longer do we have to wait? Guesses?
I am not very optimistic considering the full version was supposed to be released in the beginning of January.

It better be out today! With autonomous mode to worry about, the language improvement isn't really expendible. I don't understand how they could have left out the SELECT and the IF/THEN/ENDIF syntax out in the first place.

(Adam Collet): Well, based on the 12:00 hypothesis, and that parallax is based in California, we're now 2 hours overdue.

Good Point.
It is kind of like a car without a key. The idea is absurd.
Absurd as it is, anything we can do with IF/THEN/ELSE and SELECT/CASE constructs we can do with PBASIC 2.0. It's just not as pretty.
Out of curiosity, who else is checking innovation first every 60 seconds for the update?

I'm checking every 10 mins or so :)
This is all new stuff to me, and I JUST WANT TO GET STARTED!!!
We're going to have a working chasis by this time tomorrow!
Another question: The PBASIC 2.5 editor is a BETA release... Who thinks it's gonna be buggy?
I do. :yikes:

This is a rather good point. Even though it will compile the new better code, there will be bugs in the editor, and with it being a beta, who knows when a final will be released

And now it is over 3 hours late... hmm maybe it will really take quite a while (6 weeks)<--not my idea

I think they won't release it until we only got about 3-5 weeks left of this. I truely think we are screwed of the new style for this year.
On the plus side, next year the programming should be great!!! :(

I hope it has color highlighting... Pfft... if it doesn't give me the code and I'll add it.
That would be nice... but somehow I suspect they won't be making it an Open Source Beta. I suspect you would have to write the entire thing yourself.

Anyone know what this is written in anyways? (MFC, Win32, VB)

Im guessing MFC. The old editor looks like MFC anyhow. Maybe I'll make a better editor with color highlighting over summer. I'm so tempted to work on it now, but I have to do homework, ahhh...

Oh, kewl. I'm thinkin of something if I can ever understand MFC.

That means absolutely nothing. MFC is just another way to access the same UI features as the API. Show me something you can do in MFC and I'll find you a way to do the exact same thing with the exact same UI using the API.

MFC is like Visual Basic (the simplisticy (sp?)). But all it is is just a wrapper for the Win32 API.
Damian Manda
10-01-2003, 19:32
Of course you can do the same things with API and MFC, MFC is just supposed to make doing the same thing easier.

Actually, in my opinion, Win32 is easier than MFC, but that's only because I just started to dig into the code.

I don't really like MFC, it's a lot more easier than win32 and has more support on the internet, but it uses a lot more resources and seems slower than win32. However, speed and resources don't really matter for a pbasic ide. I don't have a program where I can go time (prog name) on windows.
Yes, I can convert anything from MFC to standard, too. But what they have as a template for the basic stamp editor, looks like the MFC wizard.
Yeah, exactly Raven. My problem with MFC is that it is like the Visual Basic of Windows GUI.

If I could just know how to let the user type stuff like in pabsic and stuff *hint hint*, then I'd work on a miniture one.

I'm trying to study for psych right now, but here is something quick and dirty.
I just did a simple search and I found this.
http://www.codeproject.com/editctrl/coloredit.asp
Text editor with colorizing, have fun.
Its MFC i think, but wahtever, just something simple I found. Check the other stuff at codeproject.

Thanks for the links. Good luck if you have a test on it

Alas, a prime example of the evils of proprietary software. If this PBASIC 2.5 spec, editor and compiler were Free Software, this issue would be a moot point. Long live GNU!
Hey, rbayer -- nice job on the GTK/GNU/Linux robot apps. Got a question tho -- how in heck did you make up the GNU autoconf and automake stuffs for your linux builds? I just can'
t get my head around it. I'm working on a game engine in C++/SDL right now and I'm just using a lame-o bourne shell script to compile it under GNU/Linux...
Thanks. :)

Almost a quarter of a day late now, I decided that posind in hours is futile. Posting in quarters of days probobly is too! :D

Oh well its still not out. Most likely they will release color highlighting, considering the last IDE released by parallax had it, Javelin Stamp IDE. It looks like the basic stamp editor 1.33 improved, but its for java.

*sighs*, still not out, and i was really looking forward to a caffeine-fueled binge of trying to get code to tokenize correctly under the 2.5 compiler.

Am I missing something or did Innovation FIRST just change something on their Documentation (http://www.innovationfirst.com/FIRSTRobotics/documentation.htm) page? Earlier today, I would have sworn it had some text in the programming section that said they would be posting the new beta soon, and now it just says to see Parallax's site for the latest version, which is 2.0 over there... I don't think that is a good sign.

I just checked, and as far as I can see, the text saying "PBASIC 2.5 Editor will be available soon." is still there. Its right beside the "PBASIC 2.5 Stamp Editor for Windows" text in the first column.

It still says the same thing it did 12 hours ago "PBASIC 2.5 Editor will be available soon." to me.
Hrm, yeah, my computer was displaying a very old version of the page for some reason, which is pretty odd, since I saw the newer version earlier today. Very strange.

:(
This would be a perfect Friday for an all-night programming episode.
P.S. Has anyone else noticed the "Test" link on the Innnovation First Website on the Documents Page. (It's at the very bottom)?

Its probably for employees
http://www.innovationfirst.com/FIRSTRobotics/(Insert Password here)/index.html
it MIGHT have the PBASIC 2.5 Editor, hehe....
quick someone guess the password, Just kidding,

How long has the test link been there? Maybe it is new, and they are making progress on posting the new editor!

Maybe we should all just give up and program our bots in C \ C++...
Or we can all just wait and hope parallax\InnovationFIRST hurries up with 2.5.
sigh... This is kind of bugging me... I have half the program worked out in 2.5 already, and no way to debug it... I really don't want to convert it to 2.0, only to convert it back to 2.5 later....
You know that as soon as one of us does a major conversion to 2.0 they'll release 2.5... Who wants to take one for the team?
First of all, you can debug 2.5 code in RoboEmu. It will even give marginally helpful feedback about malformed syntax, so you can check that too.
Second, I may write a quick converter tonight since it shouldn't take more than an hour or so if I just make it a console app. Only time will tell.
Really? Wow! THanks so much Rob, your really a major resource for the whole community!

Hmmm... I'm thinking (hoping) that each team will soon get a password, and that will be our way in to downloading the new compiler. Cross your fingers.
rwaliany
11-01-2003, 20:15
Umm, well I think tehre will be only one password.
I wouldn't really call it a password anyhow. It's a directory. It just opens http://www.innovationfirst.com/USFirst/(directory)/index.html
And if the window title says "Access Granted" then it does not redirect you.

Well its now over two days late. Now I would like to change my answer to the poll. Oh well, I still hope it will be out sometime next week:( .
ARRGGG! It's finally here... and i can't get the email with the password... ::Yells loudly at the Yahoo Mail server::
