Now that we are almost 2 weeks into the 2003 season most teams have a very good idea on what there designs look like and probably have started some building.
How many teams out there have robots can do interesting tricks or have unique features.
For starts the 229 robot will float on water, just incase the playing surface is changed at the last second we will be prepared.

I was drawing up plans for a break dancing robot that has pneumatic pushy things on all 6 sides of the bot, and it's 14x60x36, so it can do all the crazy stuph we want it to....but then they said skrew that....I jus' wanted to see this creation just going nuts in their goal area so they won't be able to do anything...:(
I was making a design for a robot that could do a 360 over the bar while holding a bin. Hey Tony Hawk Watch out.
Some team connected the drill motors, with transmission in high gear, to 10" Skyway wheels. According to my numbers, that should make their robot go 29.7 mph. That's a neat trick, can't wait to see a robot go 30 over the hill and crush a few boxes on the other side.

This wont work... You wont be able to move, because the motor wont have enough torque to overcome the friction of the wheels and move your robot in high gear. You must reduce the speed by using gears/sprockets/whatever. You can still go fast, but not 30 mph. Plus, you'd probably trip breakers going that fast anyways

Our robot has a 40-foot-long articulated arm that can grab a box from a stack on one side of the field and put it on a stack on the other side.

Oooooh oooh ooh, initial plans were a "Beam me up, Scotty" device that would immediately teleport all the bins to our scoring zone, and then keep moving the opponents bots away... Other than that, we had our nuke-bot, rocket-bot, heli-bot, flame-torch-bot, etc.etc.

The funny thing is... when we say our robot floats... we're NOT joking. Even I can't believe this one, but it's true.
We're hoping to use our autonomous phase to release a cloud of green smoke. We also have a remote camera, which hopefully FIRST will approve.
We're also using the yaw rate sensor this year to stabilize our tail rotor in our helicopter-bot.

Ours is supposidly able to take cookies from your robot or something like that. I'm not exaclty sure how that will work while still being legal.....:D

i had an idea for a robot that threw the boxs over the ramp it could also throw them at the other players stacks but the rest of the team turned it down:mad:

hahaha! none of your plans compare to the ultimate invention of team 849!!!
We were going to spray-paint our smallest member silver and put him in a sterilite container with a big hole at the bottom.
Once the game begins, he'll run around flinstone style and stack all the boxes! Then, near the end he'll add himself to a stack! Pure genius!
Except we realized that there was a sticker on the lid of the box that specifically stated that we weren't allowed to leave people in the sterilite container.
With that plan foiled we resorted to plan B: build a real robot, sigh...

Oh yeah? Team 108 was using engineers in a cart. I'll have to get the pictures and post them later. Basically, we had an engineer (our team leader at that) locked in a cage to hold an arm made out of PVC. After realizing what exactly we were doing, we figured, "Hey, why build a real robot?" We had everything figured out perfectly, We'd tell FIRST he got stuck during construction and we can't get him out without dismantling the whole robot, thus he must stay in until competition's over. Another advantage to this scheme is that we'll be the only team with a robot that can get worked on even after the pits close. We just have to leave the tools within arm's reach of the bot....

I don't think it would ever make weight requirements. Perhaps if you had a little kid in there?

Well, think about this, how long is the timeframe from ship date till competition. Im thinking by then our engineer should have been pretty well malnourished being in drayage all that time, that he's proboly lost quite a few pounds. :D

Our robot basically has the same functions that most ppl are thinking about, dominating middle, moving boxes, etc.

Our robot is the best, it is a helicopter that hides in a bin and then pops out, scaring the other robots into submission, then flies around stacking boxes. As for the stickers on the lids, we've been taking them off and wearing them, considering that we are likely to strangle each other I guess . . . . . It's a good warning to those around us, I mean, so many space monkeys can get on your nerves. . .

Ok, we've heard some pretty crazy things, but here's what the 2003 RAPTAR robot can do:
1. Gain 133 pts. within less than 10 seconds of the game.
Comment:
This is only a last ditch startup, because we wouldn't have a good QP score...
2. Stack as many bins as possible/needed.
Comment:
From 14" to 4' tall, the RAPTAR robot has it all...
3. Block the Ramp
4. Pass under the side bar.
5. Much MUCH more :cool:
So, look out fellow VCU Reigonal Teams, It's RAPTAR feeding time...
PS:
Yes, we are technically rookies.
However, several team members (such as I) have been on other FIRST teams before, or have good engineering experience.
WE DO NOT SUCK.

That"s a great idea, and if I"m guessing correctly, you"ll 0\/\/NX012 the platform, but how would you inflate one of those without breaking some pneumatics air storage rules? Anyhow, in the hands of a skilled militant feminist, our robot could castrate someone (thank god all the feminists I know are into writing, not robots).

Hey with the new list of part you can use, we figured that we should use inflatable rafts. Once the match starts we are going to use the pump to blow up the rafts making our robot so huge that it is so easy to hit the wall.
Please make sure that you all file those sharp corners.

We are having a Tesla Coil to cause electromagnetic interference so the other teams will lose radio communication with their robots. As for the autonomous period, we are going to have a high voltage electrical current arcing across the front or our robot so any robot that gets in our way will be shorted out and left inoperable.

That's nothing compared to our Auto-Weld-O Bot - it'll mig or tig or arc weld anything in our way to the side rails or another robot! Then we'll deploy our helocopter mousebot with a vacuum and it'll grab boxes from the other side and stack them on our side!
Perhaps, if that doesn't work, we'll just plant atomic bombs in the boxes and launch them over to the opponent's side....

Our robot has a long arm like drive system which extends up to the ceiling supports at VCU, right above the field. It can roll forward or backwards on them. Our robot watches the game from overhead and can drop down to interact.
Our controls were super easy too! We have a "Win" button and a "Lose" button. It can't go wrong!

Our robot has done a new trick and again this is not a joke. It was able to order a 6" Wheat, american cheese, roast beef, let, pick, and mayo grinder from Subway and again this really did happend. Sorry though I have no pictures, next time we get hungry though we will make sure to have a camera.

I still don't see how our bots can castrate anyone, but I don't really want to think about it... (Maybe if you replace some parts with sharp edges... or use that big piece of plate we have sitting on our parts cart...)
I suggested that our bot play some type of fanfare during the autonomous period, but apparently we can't work on that until we have wheels attached to something...

Yeah Chan, I think it will be powerful enough to take off an arm, so we"re going to put some serious safety restraints on it and only open the valves all the way during matches and testing - never in the pits - but I think I"ll have the urge to test out how powerful it is on some of the annoying members of our team...
Anyhow, those 2" diameter pistons are really big, so I believe our robot will go high places this year (or at least send things there in it"s place.)

When we were testing the pneumatics on our bot we threw a small cardboard box with a few screws inside most of the way across the room.. so I figure if we know we're gonna loose a match we open up the flow limiters all the way and catapult a waterballon at the other team's controllers...
Last year our ball grabber actually did injure someone during practice. One of the kids :cough: freshmen :cough: "accidentally" hit the swith for the pneumatics (luckily we later used the freshman as a sacrafice to the robot gods)

Haha, we had something similar like that happen..except it was to our student mechanical team co-leader. Our team leader was driving he put his head next to a wing, and someone let the wing down...he got hit right in the side of the head, we got him away from the bot and checked the bot to make sure he didnt break it...hehe

Our robot can slam into walls, burn you with its motor casings, and make loud grinding noises.
It has also been seen dragging an engineer with a black belt in karate across a carpet floor on his knees with no treads on the wheels.
With the drill motors in high gear we can't turn at all, but we go about 16 feet per second. Drag race, anyone?
Too bad we only have one week to build an end effector.

we've had a few plans.
Since the drill motors have been more or less reliable
we've mounted massive 700 Watt subwoofers as propulsion.
By playing a very loud low frequency noise, you've got thrust.
Vertical Take off capability was also achieved but we lost control
when we tried to convert to level flight.
Using a nuclear powerplant was looked at but we figured it'd be listed under an "exotic material"
So after a few failures of the VTOL system again, we decided that a firmly planted bot on the ground is our last option.
We put little busters on our engine that gives it a turbo buster:confused:
We can go around the field 3 times in 1:03 seconds:rolleyes:

Our Robot Can:
-Miraculosly loose and gain 10 pounds at will.
-Redesign itself in 2 days.
-Break down at pivatal moments.
-Accomplish the impossible.
So, so far we are doing what everyother FIRST team can do. :)

We hope to bring an additional transmitter and jam up the frequencies of other robots causing them to rip their wirey innards out in a frantic struggle. Also, our robot is extremely agile due to the fact that it is nought but a team member wrapped in tin foil.:D

we've specially modified the light to hypnotize all of the refs, judges, and enemy alliance (not us though- we wear special glasses). Then our team runs out and stacks all of the boxes on our side and pushes our robot to the top of the hill (we forgot to make it drive). Its a fool-proof plan, and no-one knows what kind of special glasses to get, so that is why we are telling about it.

We've found a way to instantaneously lower the room temperature to 0K, while creating a bubble of 298K that's approximately 1 meter from all the outermost edges of the robot, allowing us to freeze time and move all the boxes into our scoring zone.
This happens during the autonomous period. The refs might get confused, but we can do it more than once to prove we aren't cheating in any way. (At least, I don't BELIEVE it's against the rules...)

just out of curiosity, are you 4wd and what kind of wheels are you using?
The best trick any robot ever did was to force a bunch of people between the ages of 13 and 70 to give up a lot of their sleep to put all their atttention on it.
These robots are like newborns; they demand a lot of attention in order to have a happy life.
