Okay folks.. this is starting to get stupid. First is was the 5 posts on the same subject. Now it's answers in the form of "I don't know"
If you don't know the answer nor have a worthwhile reply.. don't post. Just scanning through some threads and I've seen:
.
-------
.
-------
no idea what you are talking about there
-------
wow...
-------
interesting
-------
hey hey hey
-------
Now these are all from the same user. There are others of different people doing basically the same thing. It's a waste of everyone's time and it does not look the slightest bit professional.
"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." If you feel your post will affect someone's thought on the subject at hand, post it. If it's in chit-chat, do whatever you want.
Let's keep the pointless posts out of the forums with people asking real questions.

"Wow, interesting.. I agree!"
(sorry I had to do that)
Gadget the posts your noticing are all made by one person. Skitz.:p

Yes I know, but there have been others. Skitz is just the latest to jump on the bandwagon
Yeah but skitz is horrible compared to what is normally on here. I agree sometimes I make pointless posts but usually most of mine are relevant. I did a search on skitz and he has most of his posts are one word answers.

I have seen some pretty bad ones lately, it is something we all do, but some just don't have any reason to post. At many of the forums I post at, "Rank" is a big factor. So many people post just for the sake of going up on rank. Skitz547 is posting a bunch of bland 1 word posts. Such issues should be taken up with the admin, or with the user... no need to bring attention to it here.. "oh well. I'm stupid" ;)
If only ChiefDelphi had a Karma system... Oh, well. I guess we just have to wait for vBulletin3.0.
To all the people out there who post just to become a "Senior Member" or a "Post-a-Holic": Remember that posting junk will only lead to you needing more posts to achieve these titles. Post meaningful, helpful stuff and you'll see that it really doesn't take long to loose the "Junior Member" title. Post worthless junk and it will take significantly longer (or so I'm told!).

Lets not single out one specific person here. We've all been guilty of one word, or one sentence posts before. Although there has been a uprising in the amount of these type of posts, it dies off adventually. To those who are making these "pointless posts" your wasting your time, our time, and forum space, and it would be in your best interest to stop.

I agree.... errr.... hrmmm.... maybe I should say more...
Really, though, it's good advice. I have seen way too many posts with just "lol" or "ha ha" or the like. If you see something funny, you don't need to put in a short laugh like that. It's totally unnecessary.

The Word Association Thread!
Excuse me while I go repent.
But, seriously, I agree that it needs to be toned down or stop altogether. I'm out there designing robots twelve hours a day, meeting the with the team for another three, and trying to keep up with the discussion here and on the official FIRST forums. It's utter madness and it's nearly overwhelming.
I understand that, sometimes, a break from the stress of designing, prototyping, building and testing is required. But, there are myriad other ways of relieving stress that don't require being a pain in the behind to people all across the country. Go throw a ball, play a video game, bowl, sled, ski, ice skate, swim. . .whatever. But, please, stop posting nonsense.
Please?
I'll be your best friend forever.

I know I'm pretty much pointing 1 person out.. but i DID pm him and there have been several after it.
It's not needed. It's not against any rules.. but it's annoying to look for an answer and get "neat question" as a reply.

You know what... who cares? Sometimes a short meaningless response is better than none. How many times have you asked a question and waited for days with nobody answering? That sometimes makes you feel like nobody read it... Just relax, and don't take the six week building stress out on the boards ;)

Hey Gadget and others.........picky, picky, picky.
I think you guys are suffering from an extreme case of the crabbies.
Happens about this time in the build process.
Try to be nice. Gracious.
Y'know - professional.
Try some sugar. Or some sleep.
Or go home and see your mom.:yikes:

I think no answer is better than one with "Oh yea."
<edit>
I have lots of sugar, and coffee, and orange soda.
I am home, but I'd rather not be seeing my mom.
</edit>
I agree with gadget pointless spam should be limited to the chit-chat are only.

Yes, I am picky. I am allowed to be.
My time is valuable and it is being wasted by people with no regard for graciousness or professionalism.
Some of these people are childish, offensive, ignorant, and disgusting. They are the ones who need to step back and examine what their participation in these forums could be. All it takes is a few days' observation and an ounce of self-restraint.
I don't think that's too much to ask of anyone.

We should probably have more admins for this forum, considering how many posts there are but there are only 3 admins or something.
Try to relax everyone - there are tools to help filter through the forums that you don't want to see.
As far as short answers go, so be it. Too many posts for admin's to check out the number of words being posted.
We can't police everything, and before this turns into a flame war - I suggest people hold back from posting negative feelings that will just lead to more potential harmful posts.

if you take a look at my post over in chit chat "Attn: Forum Users" I basically said the same thing....minus the part about being a moderator, as I am not one
meaubry couldn't have put it better

everyone has done some pointless posts (except for me, 'cause i'm perfect in everyway and have no time to post pointless stuff)... the part about pointless posts that bothers me is when someone posts some really long, professional sounding post and when i get to the end, i know the exact same as i knew in the beginning... short pointless posts are over quick, but if i waste my team reading a short essay, i at least want something, anything, to be written.

Just hit the little button that says report this to moderator.:)

Just a little reminder of the rules:
"Please remember, you are representing not only yourself, but your team as well as what FIRST stands for. Please try to practice gracious professionalism at all times."
When you guys post on the forum, not only are you representing yourself and your team, as well as what FIRST stands for, you are also setting an example to other new members on what is and isn't appropiate to post on the forum. What you said here this year is going to lead to what people will be saying next year, because you will be the ones everyone look up to when they first come in here and see what FIRST people's opinions about everything are.
It's quite a heavy responsibility if you think about it. I remind myself everytime I make a post. It keeps me from being out of line most of the time, and thinking clearly on a subject before I hit the reply button.
It is very easy to click "reply", type 5 words, and post something in a thread... But if it doesn't mean anything to you, or to whoever reading the thread, do you really think its worth spending that 15 seconds clicking and typing? There are lots and lots of really good threads in this forum, and you probably have a lot of good opinions about them... Why not search around a little, and try to join in the discussion instead of just clicking a few threads on top of the forum and post "pointless posts" as others call it?
I am just confused as to why people will even want to use up a part of their time to do something like this. I personally got a lot of work to do, beside FIRST related stuff, especially now that I've been sick for 2 weeks... I never would spend the 15 seconds saying something that really have no meaning to me or to any other people. I hope everyone will realize what their time could've been spent doing. Maybe thinking more about the robot... Or thinking how to help the team in 6 weeks... Or trying to do homework and get more sleep... etc.
Maybe time changes, and the forum isn't what it was anymore... But once a while, that was proven wrong by some really good threads hidden in between the forums.
Always remember... We are here to share, learn, teach, inspire, expose, think, and communicate. If you are doing anything less than any of these, its just not worth your percious time.
Another reminder of advices from one of the greatest posters on the forum:
"1. Make your point concise.
2. Keep your emotions in check.
3. Try to keep your posts from being one big paragraph.
4. If someone provides information that may change your opinion or disprove yours, it's ok to say "yeah, I was wrong". Heck, I still do this... see, I am wrong for not being concise in this point. heh.
Andy B."
I just want to add one more to this:
Think twice before you post.
i too believe that pointless posts are getting to be too much. thank you ken...because what you said makes sense. Also another problem is people that don't search before they post. Their simple question could have been answered usually if they scrolled down the forum. put gadget thanks for bringing up a point that I totally agree with.
ok...guys that are complaining about skitz...i apologize on behalf of the team for the stupid stuff that he's doing...please don't think that the entire team is like that...they are HIS actions alone...we will discuss this with him and try to keep him from doing it anymore...

did i miss some super awesome signiture?
back to the point: pointless posts, as you so adoringly call them, are useless, wastes of time, and get on everyones nerves. but i've got to say, use what forum tools there are to ignore them, and move on... no disrespect, but 15 seconds extra reading a pointless post will not kill you, will not keep you from fixing your robot's cancer, and will not end up preventing your team from getting to your regionals (unless you end up being 15 sec late to the bus, in that case, i'm sorry)
pointless posts are unneeded, but come with the idea of forums... people have a need to talk, some people like reading what they type more than they like typing usefull info, just like somepeople like to hear themselves speak... you can't stop them by creating an entire post on the subject, because this forum will get absolutely NOTHING done about it...
just keep to your own standards of posting behavior and hope it rubs off on other people :]

all i was doing by those posts was i was changing my signature then going to post something to see if it looked better or not, I didn't mean to start an uproar. I really am sorry. I don't mean anything by it and i didn't mean to be stupid. I didn't realize untill later on the when you update your signature it automatically does it on your past signatures also. I am sorry about creating all this drama. It was just my ignorance. I am new, and I had no idea that posting boosted your something??? Nothing was meant by it. I really didn't mean to. IJt won't happen again. SORRY!

-yell in a pillow
-mutalate a pencil
-learn Spanish

These are just some of the things you can do besides spam the forum.

Also everything changes in old posts when you change things like your sig and pic and custom title if you have one. SO just go to an old post of yours and look at that and then you have no need for the pointless posts.
