how long does it usually take for a posted picture to actually make it to the gallery?

Depending on when you upload them, anywhere from instantly->12 hours. There are a few people who can approve pictures, more than in the past, so it shouldn't take more than 1-2 hours, on average, if uploaded during normal daytime/evening hours.
