So, we're at the t minus 2 day mark and I was wondering if you are under or over weight. We are, guess what, underweight, and by a lot. Many parts of our bot got cut out due to technical problems, so we are working on adding more weight. :)

So, what about you?

At last count the Bobcat was fully functional (as long as it didn't burst into flames after I left the scrimmage) and well underweight, coming in at only about 100 lbs. We will be making a few mods and adding plenty of armor before Tuesday. I expect us to ship at between 120 and 130.

wheres the "not sure yet" option?

Our robot was originally going to be light (I'm talking like under 75 lbs.) but we've kept adding weight to our high speed drive-train. Our robot is now around 115 and is still plenty under the weight limit, but our robot is significantly slowed down.

As of yesterday, we were at 145lbs. We shaved off around 8 today, dropping us to 137, but we still have a LOT of holes to drill and stuff to rip out. I quite literally melted three drill bits today trying to get our weight down. Next on the list of things to get "lightening holes": the battery! :D:confused::ahh:

We are waaaaaaaay underweight this year...too bad they dont have the "featherweight in the finals" award anymore...:yikes:

Well, for the Featherweight in the finals, we probably where the reason they stop doing it. Our engineering place is AFL which is a subsidiary of Alcoa (Aluminum) so we where always lite. Two years in a row we took it, so i guess they just stopped it...

And for us this year, we should hover the 126 mark... :D

I don't understand how, but we are quite underweight.

Somehow our robot this year was 95 lbs. Its nice actually having to ADD weight.

Well, we weighed in VERY early this morning, and found that we were about 137.6 lbs. In result we have sacrificed our elegant variable speed drive, and had to switch back to the old fashioned shifting.

Don't know what to say, we added 12lbs to get to 129lbs

i have no idea how we are under weight but we are about 10lbs under and we are now just adding armor to add weight to the robot.

Lets just say Team 384 was joking today about attaching a flame thrower, fiberoptics, and a huge aluminium logo with painted lexan behind it to our bot. That's how underweight we are. We are currently standing at around 91lbs.

oh my...my team had to take off about 20-30 pounds...I guess aluminum kinda gets a little heavy after a while...time to move on to the titanium parts....;)

as of saturday we were 147 pounds...ekkk...80/20 isnt that light.....but today i think we got to 129 and had not finished turckey beasts diet...so hopefully when we weigh in tomorrow we will be well under (we used a stupid scale today to messure) the lab witht the good scale was closed today because of all the snow, and the columbus state popo wouldnt let us into the build...BLAH!!! i guess we will find out tomorrow how things weight up!! hhaha

DON YALL LOVE THE SNOW!!! THURSDAY THURSDAY!!!! WOOO HOOOO!

We are under 100 pounds!!!!!!!!

Daniel Brim

Right now we are at 122. We will probably add the extra eight pounds with a cooling system for our drill motors and a wire mesh on our box-killer arm so we don't get caught in the boxes again.

We guesstimated that the robot would be between 92 and 100 lbs about a week ago. We weighed everything yesterday and came up with 112. Today we changed the cover, altered some things, and came up to 120. Eh... I still want lead weights...

I hope that was a joke because titanium is considered an "exotic material" and is not allowed on robots this year.

We are actually underweight... 112 LBS. So, we added a couple things, since our "coach" wants us to be at exactly 130 LBS, nothing over, nothing under.

As of tonight we are 128.6, mechanism(s) attached, nothing mechanical to add.

We have a method for weight reduction. We lost 5lbs before we finalized a design or put two pieces together. You'll just have to wait and see what we did. If you won't see us, I'll post autocad drawings on the 1st.

We are at 125, with a couple little things still to add (diamond plating for the front/rear, stickers, and some lexan for the top)...So we'll prolly end up around 128-130

At the weight limit and with everything working/everything on... it's very nice and incredibly satisfying to be able to have 5 days of driver practice with everything working.

we are around 120 i think...
It was nice that for once we didn't have to rid ourselves of 10-20 pounds of weight.

On Monday we came in at about 150-155 (:ahh:). I have come to hate 80/20, it is soo heavy, our team has come in very overweight every year we have used it.

Fortunatly right now we are replacing 80/20 with square tube which is about half the weight per length. The drivetrain also has some excessivly large plates with much potential for the bandsaw weight reduction plan. I think we'll make it...

last year we had to cut about eight pounds we used bosch extrusion and totally filled out the 30x36x60 space alotted. So we comenced to drill holes in everything from axles to under the robot and motor controllers.

This year however we were under and had to add 20 to 30 pounds of lead and solder weights on the lower front members. We used 2x2 and 1.5x1.5 box section, 1.5x1.5 angle and lots of sheet aluminum for mounts and things. even with all that weight we can still do wheelies if we try. We also welded almost everyhting up that we could which saved us about 10-15 pounds of nuts and bolts.

Tips for lightening up:
- All sold axles can be drilled out or replaced with 3/32" wall tubing. Believe you, me it's plenty strong enough.
-Instead of using plate and heavy sheet metal for mounts. Take thin aluminum sheet metal and just bend up the side to form a little box is really easy and EXTREMELY strong.
- any electornics that have four bolt holes only need to bolts on opposing corners.
- There is a 4x4 square section of prime area to be lost under the controller and at least a 2x2 area to be lost under each speed controller.
-If you first bolted up your frame see if you can get it welded it's well woth the weight savings and don't bother to fill in the bolt holes with weld if at some time during the competion your weld brakes or cracks just put the bolt back in. however in a good weld the parent material that you are welding should brake first not the weld.

good luck,

when we took our robotch to be weighed it was jumping between 130-131 (most large freight scales round to the nearest lb) but then we rememberd to take off the bungee cord holding our parts on.
then it came back to 130 and we cheered.

At one point we were over by as much as 21 lbs!!!!!!!!!! Luckily we were able to chop off about 19-20 lbs( though it really affects are capabililites) so we really only need to drill about a pound or 2 off at regionals. :ahh:

I think I'm about a normal weight, but I'm trying to bulk up and weight train. I'm gonna be HUGE man, HUGE!

We predicted to be way overweight in the beginning but in the end we were right on the mark.

Yes. At one point, it was 35 lbs over, WITHOUT battery or electronics board. Now, we're only 138, total. There is no way we can be legal with our current configuration.

On the bright side, we were able to take 10 pounds off from the sprockets alone. Man, chrome steel is heavy.

We weighed in with everything except our lift a few weeks ago at under 80 pounds. Then we added our lift, which apparently weighs fifty pounds. Can't figure where all fifty came from, but we have about a pound of room for stickers and plexiglass...we're no lightweight this time!

Jeff Waegelin
23-02-2003, 22:07
129.2 lbs the night before. We still have a bit to shave off so we can add our trademark lexan sides...

Dan 550
23-02-2003, 22:14
Lexan sides are good. It's the five foot tall black tarp sides that really get the attention in a match, though.

Who has time to weigh their robot? As long as I could still pick it up I knew we were fine. We're definitely a lightweight this year.

Actually we managed to find the time to weigh our drivetrain w/ battery and electronics (but nothing else) at 69 lbs. We definitely have plenty of weight to spare.

as of now WITHOUT our arm we are about a good 70 pounds....with our arm we are really pushing the 130!! and we do not even know if we are going to be going with the arm yet! when I say arm I mean our stacker...we have another arm(aka: fly swatter) that we can mount depending on the storage to knock over the boexs on our side..and with that mounted its around 90-100
