How many teams have the ability to upright boxes?

Say "I"

Sparky (#384) can orient (and stack) boxes in practice, but during an actual match we never tried it. There was always too much chaos and bumping around with other bots.

401 had the abilitiy. But we gave it up for improvements elsewhere.

Anyone can right a box....if they drive at it fast enough, and if you sandwich it between you and the wall, you have little pieces, a lot easier to work with.

We had an orienter in the back that we never got to use :(

868 (Carmel High School) had an orienter that seemed to work; they were the ONLY bot that I saw that was able to stack at ALL at St. Louis...

Team 1038 can manipulate boxes and stack, but as many other teams have stated, its not very practical to do in the matches. Stacking has turned out to be a very weak strategy from what I've seen.

16 made a few stacks of 2-3...

there was one team that could orient and stack at the buckeye they were the only team that was good at it but i can't remember what number they were their bot had a roller system and a little poker thing to right boxes works pretty good

MOE (team 364) did it too, at the Chesapeake regional. They have a nice, well-designed mechanism for righting bins.
Aye (for them) or maybe, They.

stackers are pretty good if they have something to align the boxes so that they dont slip...

i thought that team 624 did a VERY good job of building up on the human stack... they got to five or six high in some rounds i think (and kept it up away from others)

aye aye, we right them with a flaming passion... maybe not, but watch some footage from annapolis, our driver got quite good at it by the finals (and we're moe, 365, not 364, but it's ok :-p, i don't remember any of your team numbers either)

Jeremiah Johnson

Team number 648 had a "poker" on the front that could turn over bins quickly and efficiently. We had to remove it because it was useless because we didn't feel the need to stack. Besides, the playing field is too chaotic to stack and even see the bins.

How many of you saying "stacking is irrevalant" were watching the Annapolis Regional? I thought we proved you wrong. We only got to the finals due to our ability to stack. And some dumb luck.

We have a cool little thingy on the front of our robot that flips bins and we stacked 4 successfully, and almost 6 unsuccessfully. I think people will be intruiged when we introduce a new ability to the game. We didn't do it at Annapolis because we weren't sure whether we could pull it off. I am confident that we can do it, and I hope to prove it during practice rounds. hehehe. Well, I feel stackers are still in the game. Good luck guys.

Team 1114 has a neat little flipping arm that can flip over boxes. I don't know how much they use it in actual competition, however.

Since you asked... We were in Annapolis (in the next pit - 384). Yes, you have a very nice mechanism for righting and stacking the boxes. I didn't personally see the match in which you placed a 4-stack, but I did hear of it. What I did see was several other failed attemps. The problems I perceived were that external jostling and bumping from other robots gave your stacker problems, and in the end, you weren't consistently able to place the stack.

I guess my summary is that
a) stacking CAN turn the tide of a match, but
b) stacking is too unreliable (from what I have seen) to count on

I love your design, and I look forward to seeing what is new at Nationals.

At this point, I am only hoping that we will get to go, as our school board has cancelled all field trips outside of our city due to the war.
We'll see.

238 can upright and stack boxes....but....don't use it...due to the fact that no one has been stacking...its all about knocking down and clearing away the boxes....

No, we can't. Our robot is not designed to orient the bins in any way.

Granted, we would be able to orient the bins by picking them up and dropping them, or using our collective spiritual energies to "will" the boxes into the proper position. Or perhaps (this hasn't been tested) by chanting in Elvish, we could get the boxes to turn the right way.

Unfortunately, it’s not happening anytime soon in a real match. Sorry. We don’t have an ability to reorient bins. At all. Thank you.

Sorry to say we can orient boxs just not fast enough within the 2 minutes. WE can do it, cause i have done it during practice. It is not our primary concern to but we can. Sorry but our stratedy guy has not seen enough practice time to understand that we can. Sorry for the incovience.

Our stacker had some problems that needed worked out, and there were some strategical things that were not worked out. I am hopeful that we will be a more impressive stacker at Philly and Nationals.

OK, so if we can't orient bins within two minutes, can we do it??

NO!

It is not a designed ability of our robot, it is not a reliable capability of our robot, it is not a functional capability of our robot.

Perhaps by PURE CHANCE, we could pick up and drop a bin so it lands sunny side up. But random chance is hardly an ability.

Actually, I was there for *plenty* of practice time, and in the hours spent practicing, I know that we cannot orient bins. I have not once seen us reorient a bin, EVER.

Maybe you did it once, but that is hardly an “ability." Before I posted, I talked to 303’s pilot, and he also agreed that we did not have the ability, and your post was in error.

If you don't think that I'm doing a satisfactory job at coaching/human player/database/Intel gathering, feel free to tell me in person, instead of alluding to it on these boards. I have contributed a lot to the team this year, and do not appreciate being belittled by YOU here.

We can and our orienter also serves as a two or three bin stacker.

a lil off topic but, had anyone thought of setting up their stacks so that they would be able to go under the bar and pick up their stack, do stuff like clear their goal area/get crates in your area, and then drop it off at the near end?

I'm just a little disappointed because I only saw only one stacker actually used in Hartford, and there was ABSOLUTELY NO stacking/orienting at all in New York regionals!!!!

Err..you mean carry a stack around through the whole match?

You'd better be ready to take a beating though - that robot would be an instant target.

Yan Wang

810 hasn't done so yet but I believe that was their intended function. They would pick up a stack of 4, hold it, move to the bar, deattach the arm and reattach it to the robot on the other side. It's a great concept and I'd love to see it work.

Btw, any thoughts on www.orbitreview.com/~temp/orienting.rm ?

Why waste time orienting the boxes? why not just stack them upside down or rightside up.

but think about it, a bot that would simply carry a stack around for the entire game (even a stack of 2) could turn the tide in a game! Just carry those human player stacks around, and drop them off 10 secs before the end, and fly up that ramp!

Sorry bout talking about all this theoretical stuff, just disappointed to the reality that most teams hardly ever used their arms. Expecting a whole lot more action in Nats.:D
